Camping near Wellington, Ohio
Wellington sits in Lorain County in northeast Ohio, about an hour southwest of Cleveland and within reach of Lake Erie. The area combines Ohio state park camping with several private RV resorts, making it a practical base for a family RV trip that mixes lake activities, trails, and day-trips to the city or the shoreline.
The anchor destination is Findley State Park, an 838-acre wooded park just south of Wellington on State Route 58, built around a 93-acre lake formed by an earthen dam completed in 1956. Beyond the state park, Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort and Rustic Lakes Campgrounds Inc offer private-park amenities close to town, while Cleveland/Sandusky Jellystone Park in nearby Nova targets families with a heated pool, an inflatable water obstacle course, and Yogi Bear character events. Freedom Valley Gay Campground rounds out the local options.
Most private parks run a spring-through-fall season, while Findley's campground stays open year-round for RV travelers willing to camp in cooler weather.
Things to do around Wellington
Findley State Park is the main draw for on-site recreation. The park has roughly 16 miles of trails open to both hikers and mountain bikers, including the 11-mile Thorn Mountain Bike Trail with a mix of flat middle sections and technical climbs. A 435-foot swim beach, two boat ramps, and rentals for canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats round out the lake activities, and boating is restricted to hand-powered vessels and electric motors only.
Families staying at Cleveland/Sandusky Jellystone Park in Nova get access to a heated pool, a floating water obstacle course on the on-site lake, a rock climbing wall, jump pad, gaga ball, disc golf, paddle boats, and appearances by Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and Cindy Bear.
Off-site, Lake Erie beaches, Cedar Point in Sandusky, and downtown Cleveland are all within an easy day-trip radius.

Northeast Ohio has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summer, roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day, is peak camping season. Daytime highs typically sit in the mid 70s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, private parks run their full activity schedules, and weekend sites at Findley and the Jellystone resort fill early. Book several months out for holiday weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. April and May bring wildflowers and green-up in Findley's woods, and precipitation is spread fairly evenly through the warm months, with frequent thunderstorms in late spring and early summer. September and October usually deliver stable weather, fall color, and easier last-minute availability, though nights turn cold by late October.
Winter is cold and snowy in Lorain County, with measurable snowfall from about November through April. Findley State Park's campground remains open year-round, but private resorts, cabins, and the swim beach close for the season. Ice fishing is possible on Findley Lake when conditions allow.

How to book
Findley State Park uses the Ohio State Parks reservation system, operated through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked online or by phone at 866-644-6727 up to six months in advance, and reservations are required. Weekends carry a two-night minimum, and holidays require three nights. Ohio does not charge a state park entrance fee and does not sell an annual pass.
A limited number of walk-in sites at Findley are held first-come, first-served, including a handful of electric sites. If the office is closed on arrival, campers self-register at the camp office.
Cleveland/Sandusky Jellystone Park books directly through its website or Campspot. Claremar Twin Lakes, Rustic Lakes, and Freedom Valley take reservations directly through their operators.
What to expect on site
Findley's campground has roughly 257 sites in a mix of full hookup, electric, and non-electric, spread across sunny and shaded loops under mature pines and hardwoods. Amenities include showers, flush toilets, laundry, a dump station, camp store, game room, playground, and a nature center in the campground. Pets are allowed on designated sites, and three rustic cabins are rentable during the summer months.
Private parks in the area lean toward full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Jellystone in Nova, southwest of Wellington, adds cabins, group sites, and heavy family programming.
Cell coverage is generally adequate around Wellington but can be spotty in the wooded loops. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Ohio quarantine rules.

Travel trailers average around $120 a night, while motorhome rentals near Wellington run closer to $200 a night, and many hosts offer discounts on weekly or monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Wellington, filter by your dates, sort by price, and consider booking a travel trailer that a host can deliver to Findley State Park so you skip towing entirely. Pro tip: midweek pickups in May or September tend to unlock the best rates, since Lorain County Fair week in late August is the busiest stretch of the season.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellington,OhioWhat do I need to rent an RV in Wellington, Ohio?
Good news: if you can drive a car, you can rent an RV in Wellington. Ohio does not require a special license or commercial driver's license (CDL) for any of the personal-use RVs listed on RVezy, so a regular driver's license from any U.S. state or Canadian province is all you need. You must be 25 or older, and you'll confirm your ID quickly through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly, and you're ready to roll into Findley State Park or out to Lake Erie the same day.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-id-online-services.aspxIs RV rental in Wellington covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, every RV rental in Wellington, OH automatically comes with an RVezy protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip based on the coverage level you choose at checkout, not one set by the host. If you get a flat on State Route 58 heading to Findley State Park or a battery dies at a campground near Oberlin, one phone call gets help dispatched any time of day or night. It is the kind of safety net that makes first time renting an RV feel a lot less intimidating.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Wellington RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Ohio, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If life gets in the way or severe weather rolls in off Lake Erie, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is and the circumstances, and the RVezy support team is available to help. Pro tip: book your Wellington RV trip early to secure the best pricing and inventory, then use that grace period to finalize plans like camping at Findley State Park or a Cedar Point weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Wellington?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Wellington, and you can find them in seconds by checking the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you arrive, your dog will love the area: Findley State Park has leashed-pet-welcome campsites and miles of wooded hiking trails, and the Lorain County Metro Parks Wellington Reservation features a paved 1.6-mile loop perfect for evening walks. Black River Reservation, about 20 minutes north, is another dog-friendly favorite for shaded riverside strolls. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes so check-in is smooth.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/findley-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Wellington?
Yes, RV delivery in Wellington is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts will drop the RV at Findley State Park, Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort, or even your driveway in the village, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no learning curve on day one. Use the Delivery filter when you search, and message the host with your campsite number so they can confirm the fee, which is usually based on distance from their home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellington,OhioHow far can I drive on a Wellington RV trip?
You have a huge range from Wellington, and many hosts even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage so you can roam freely. Popular drives include Cedar Point in Sandusky (about 45 miles, 1 hour), Cuyahoga Valley National Park (about 45 miles, 1 hour), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland (about 45 miles, 1 hour), Mohican State Park in Loudonville (about 65 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes), and Amish Country near Millersburg (about 70 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes). Each listing shows the daily mileage allowance and overage rate up front, so you will know exactly what is included before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellington,OhioWhat are the best campgrounds near Wellington, OH?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Wellington. Findley State Park, just 3 miles south on State Route 58, is the local star with 257 sites, full-hookup options, a swimming lake, and 10-plus miles of trails. Claremar Twin Lakes Camping Resort sits right in Wellington with a sandy beach and family-friendly vibe. Just up the road, the Lorain County Metro Parks Wellington Reservation is perfect for day use, while Rustic Lakes Campground in Sullivan and American Wilderness Campground in Grafton round out the seasonal options from spring through mid-October. ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/findley-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Wellington?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Wellington RV trip, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s and cool, comfortable nights in the 60s. June and September are local favorites, since black flies and humidity ease up and Findley State Park empties out a bit after Labor Day. Fall foliage peaks in mid-to-late October across northern Ohio and is spectacular along the Vermilion River and through Cuyahoga Valley. Winters are cold (highs in the 30s, frequent lake-effect snow), but some hosts offer four-season rigs with heated tanks if you're up for a quiet, snowy escape to Mohican.
weather.gov/cle/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is something thousands of guests do every year on RVezy, and Wellington is a particularly forgiving place to start because the roads are flat, the campgrounds are well-marked, and traffic outside the Cleveland metro is light. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water, slide-outs, generator, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. Choose a smaller travel trailer or Class C motorhome if you're nervous about size, or book delivery and skip driving the rig entirely. Findley State Park's wide pull-through sites are ideal for a confidence-building first night.
villageofwellington.com/96/Plan-a-VisitWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 71, a dead battery at a campsite near Oberlin, or a tow into Lorain is one phone call away around the clock. Your host is also just a message away for quick fixes like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: take photos of the RV at pickup, save the roadside number to your phone, and note your nearest cross street so help arrives faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Wellington RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-state road trips are wide open. A motorhome rental in Wellington can easily roll into Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, or West Virginia, all within a half day's drive. Cross-border trips into Canada (Niagara Falls is about 3.5 hours away, Toronto about 4.5) may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance on their listing, so message them directly before booking to confirm and bring your passport. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan and insurance do not extend there. Popular interstate routes include the Lake Erie Circle Tour and a run to Pittsburgh's Strip District.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Wellington RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most people expect. Ohio gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and northern Ohio's flat terrain means you'll squeeze better mileage out of any rig. Class C motorhomes usually return 8 to 10 mpg, larger Class A's 6 to 8 mpg, and a midsize travel trailer behind a half-ton truck around 10 to 12 mpg. A 250-mile loop to Cedar Point and Cuyahoga Valley and back to Wellington runs roughly $80 to $120 in gas for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or TA travel centers along I-71 near Lodi, where diesel and gas are reliably cheaper than in-town stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wellington?
For a smooth trip, book your campsite the moment your RV is confirmed. Findley State Park sites are reservable up to six months out through the Ohio State Parks reservation system at ReserveOhio, and the lakeside full-hookup sites sell out fast for July weekends, Lorain County Fair week in August, and fall-color weekends in October. Private parks like Claremar Twin Lakes and American Wilderness in Grafton tend to fill 2 to 4 weeks ahead in peak summer. Pro tip: if you're flexible, midweek Sunday-through-Thursday stays at Findley almost always have openings, even in July, and they cost less.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-facilityWhat are local driving conditions like around Wellington?
Driving an RV around Wellington is about as easy as it gets in Ohio. The village sits on the flat farmland of southern Lorain County, with State Route 58, U.S. 20, and State Route 18 offering wide, gently rolling two-lane roads ideal for first-timers. Interstate 71 is just 10 minutes east and connects you straight to Cleveland or Columbus. Watch for the 60-plus daily freight trains rolling through downtown Wellington (the railroad crossings can mean a 5-minute pause), and use caution on lake-effect snow days from December to February. In summer, afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so keep an eye on the radar before crossing open farmland.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/ohgoWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wellington?
Local campgrounds are well equipped for a comfortable stay. Findley State Park offers 15 full-hookup sites plus 20/30/50-amp electric sites, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, potable water fill, a camp store, and a swimming beach. Claremar Twin Lakes adds a sandy beach, while Rustic Lakes and American Wilderness have pools and full hookups during their April-to-October season. If you need to dump or fill water on a travel day, Findley's dump station is open to registered campers, and many Pilot and Flying J stops along I-71 offer public dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: cell signal is solid on Verizon and AT&T throughout the area, so streaming and remote work both work fine.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/findley-state-parkWhat is included inside a typical Wellington RV rental?
You will feel right at home from the moment you step inside. Most RV rentals in Wellington come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeping 4 to 8 depending on the rig), a propane stove and oven, microwave, fridge and freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, furnace, hot water heater, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include a TV, generator or solar setup, outdoor speakers, and basic kitchen gear. Wi-Fi is hit or miss, so plan to use your phone hotspot. When you book your motorhome rental in Wellington, check the listing's amenity list and message the host about any must-haves like a coffee maker or stroller storage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellington,OhioWhat add-ons and options are available with a Wellington RV rental?
Hosts make a campervan rental in Wellington feel turnkey with smart add-ons. Common options include linen and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours, portable grills, bike racks, kayaks, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, and many hosts also offer dump and fill service at return so you skip the dump station on your last day. Each host sets their own mileage policy (often 100 free miles per day, with some offering unlimited), pickup and drop-off windows, and pet fees. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a dump-out package on your first trip so you can focus on enjoying Findley State Park instead of logistics.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellington,OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card right on the listing page, and your booking is locked in once the host accepts. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) before your trip and released after a successful return, typically within a few days. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick photo walkaround with your host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks (or pay the dump-out add-on). Pro tip: keep the chat with your host inside the RVezy app so everything is documented in one place, that is the smoothest way to wrap a Wellington trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first weekend itinerary from Wellington?
Here's a local-favorite plan for a family RV trip in Wellington. Pick up your rig Friday afternoon (or have it delivered) and head 3 miles south to Findley State Park for a quiet first night by the lake. Saturday, drive 30 miles north to Cedar Point in Sandusky for the world's best roller coasters, or hop on the Lake Erie shoreline for Vermilion's beaches. Sunday, swing east 45 minutes to Cuyahoga Valley National Park for Brandywine Falls and a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Back in town, the Spirit of '76 Museum and downtown Wellington's preserved 1800s storefronts make a perfect Monday-morning stop before drop-off.
