Campgrounds and RV parks near West Alexandria, OH

Hueston Woods is the main outdoor draw. The park is known for its old-growth beech-maple forest, diverse wildlife, and fossil hunting in exposed Ordovician limestone beds along Big Four Hollow. Families staying at Dayton KOA Holiday have on-site options plus easy trips into the city. Dayton itself is home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Horsemans Camp at Hueston Woods gives riders direct access to bridle trails, and the surrounding Preble County backroads suit cycling and casual driving tours.

Southwest Ohio has four distinct seasons. The climate around Dayton is humid continental, with cold winters and warm, humid summers that bring frequent thunderstorms. Peak camping season runs from late spring through early fall, and weekend sites at popular parks book out well in advance. Spring brings unsettled weather and some of the highest rainfall totals of the year, but also the greenest landscapes. This is the part of the country where tornadoes can form, most often in spring but occasionally in autumn, so travelers should keep a weather radio or phone alerts handy. Summer is warm and humid with regular afternoon storms, and swimming at Acton Lake and the KOA pool becomes a daily activity. Fall is often the most comfortable window for RV travel. September tends to be one of the drier months, and mid-October typically brings peak leaf color across the beech-maple forests. Winter camping is possible at Hueston Woods, which stays open year round, though most private parks close for the season. Dayton KOA Holiday operates from April through November.

Sites in the area range from full-hookup RV pads to primitive tent spots. At Hueston Woods, the year-round campground offers more than 200 electric sites, including 20 with full hookup, and more than 100 non-electric sites, with a picnic table and fire ring at each site. Loops A and B have full-service restroom and shower buildings, while the remaining loops provide electric and non-electric camping served by vault latrines. A trailer waste station, showers, flush toilets, and laundry are available. Dayton KOA Holiday leans toward a resort-style experience. The campground provides 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water, sewer, and cable TV connections, with pull-through sites that accommodate big rigs. Rangers advise securing food since raccoons actively forage sites after dark.
