Campgrounds near Wilmington, Ohio
Wilmington sits in Clinton County in southwest Ohio, roughly midway between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus. The area is farmland and small towns, with two large state park reservoirs supplying most of the RV camping within a short drive: Cowan Lake to the south and Caesar Creek to the west.
Cowan Lake State Park, at 1750 Osborn Road in Wilmington, anchors the local camping scene with a 1,075-acre park built around a 700-acre lake that carries a 10-horsepower limit. The state park campground offers 254 sites in a mix of electric, non-electric, pet-friendly, pull-through, and accessible configurations, plus 21 furnished cabins in a wooded loop. Just outside the park boundary, Beechwood Acres Camping Resort on Yankee Road provides a private-park alternative within a short walk of the lake, with 95 wooded sites, a heated pool, and cabin and yurt rentals.
Caesar Creek State Park, about a half-hour west, holds the region's largest campground with 287 sites around a 2,830-acre Army Corps reservoir. Wilmington RV Resort and Frontier Campground round out the nearby private options for travelers wanting full hookups closer to town.
Things to do near Wilmington
The lakes drive most trip planning. Cowan Lake carries a 10-horsepower limit that keeps it well suited to kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, and fishing for saugeye, crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill. The park adds a swimming beach, an 18-hole disc golf course near the dance pavilion, and a seasonal nature center inside the campground. Kayak rentals are available in season through the commissary.
Caesar Creek allows larger motorboats on its 2,830-acre lake and adds more than 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, a visitor center, and shoreline fossil hunting permitted by the Army Corps at no charge under posted size limits. Pioneer Village near the park recreates 19th-century settler life.
For a rainy-day plan, Kings Island amusement park is a short drive west, and the shops and restaurants of Waynesville and downtown Wilmington are within easy reach.

The main Ohio State Parks camping season runs late spring through late October. At Caesar Creek, the campground stays open year-round but is winterized from November 1 through April 1, with reduced facilities and no potable water. Cowan Lake shifts to an off-peak schedule during the same window: one shower house remains open, the dump station stays available, and roughly 160 sites remain reservable, while cabins stay open through the winter.
Summer is peak season across the region. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out months in advance at both Cowan Lake and Caesar Creek, and lakeside and full-hookup sites are the first to go. Weekdays in June and August offer the best chance of availability, though reservations are still required at both state parks.
Fall brings cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and strong foliage color through October in the oak, hickory, and maple woodlands surrounding both lakes. Winter camping is limited to cabins, hardier off-peak sites, and a small number of year-round private sites.

How to book campgrounds near Wilmington
Cowan Lake State Park and Caesar Creek State Park both reserve through the Ohio State Parks system at ReserveOhio.com or by phone at (866) 644-6727. Campsite reservations may be made up to six months in advance, and cabins at Cowan Lake may be booked up to one year in advance. No walk-in or self-registration is offered at either park: a confirmed reservation is required before setting up.
Private campgrounds book directly. Beechwood Acres Camping Resort takes reservations by phone at (937) 289-2202 or through its website; all sites include water, electric, and grey water drains, with no in-ground sewer at the pad. Wilmington RV Resort and Frontier Campground handle bookings through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and any holiday, plan to book several months out and watch for cancellations closer to arrival.
What to expect on-site
At Cowan Lake, expect a paved campground road system with 254 campsites plus 21 cabins, a commissary carrying firewood, ice, snacks, hand-dipped ice cream, and grilled food items, and bike and kayak rentals on a first-come basis. The B loop is tent-only and non-electric; RVs should target the electric loops. A limited off-peak section stays open November through April with reduced services.
Caesar Creek's main campground has 252 electric sites and 35 full-hookup sites on paved pads that fit rigs up to about 40 feet, with 50-amp electric service, showers, flush toilets, a dump station, a camper's beach, playground, and boat ramp. Water is provided at communal spigots rather than at every pad, so bring a long hose or fill the fresh tank on arrival.
Beechwood Acres offers water and electric with grey water drains, a heated pool, laundry, camp store, and scheduled family activities on summer weekends.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wilmington, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wilmington, OH?
RV rental in Wilmington, OH is one of the most affordable ways to explore southern Ohio, with travel trailers typically running $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes around $175 to $250, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400. Because Wilmington sits between Cincinnati and Dayton without big-city demand spikes, you'll often find better nightly rates than renting from those metros directly. To score a cheap RV rental in Wilmington, book midweek, travel in May or September (shoulder season), and look for hosts offering generous mileage allowances. Pro tip: hosts who include linens, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs save you $50 to $100 in setup costs, so factor that into your comparison.
clintoncountyohio.com/camping/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Wilmington, Ohio?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Wilmington, Ohio. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans listed on RVezy, regardless of size. You'll need to be at least 25 years old and upload a clear photo of your license during booking, which RVezy verifies through the platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto club). Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're approved and ready to hit Route 68 toward Cowan Lake.
bmv.ohio.gov/dl-id-classes.aspxWhat protection is included with my Wilmington RV rental?
Every RV rental in Wilmington booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into the reservation, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV, giving you real financial peace of mind. During booking, you choose the protection level that fits your trip (not the host), so you can scale coverage up for a long Ohio loop or keep it lean for a quick weekend at Caesar Creek. This isn't traditional auto insurance, it's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals, which is why thousands of guests book confidently every season. Review the plan options before checkout to pick the right fit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Wilmington RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy has you covered with a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you reserve. Hosts in Wilmington don't set their own cancellation rules; RVezy manages the policy centrally, so you get consistent, fair treatment whether you're renting a campervan for a Kings Island weekend or a Class A for a Hocking Hills road trip. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. For full details on timelines and refund tiers, review the cancellation policy on RVezy before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Wilmington RV rental?
Absolutely, and Wilmington is a fantastic basecamp for a pet-friendly RV rental. Many RVezy hosts in the area welcome dogs, so toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching to see your options instantly. Cowan Lake State Park allows leashed pets in designated pet camping areas, and Caesar Creek State Park welcomes leashed pets on most trails and has a dedicated pet swimming area, a wonderful perk in Ohio. Pack a long lead, collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination, which Ohio state parks may ask to see. Message your host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed notes so checkout is smooth and your Wilmington RV trip starts stress-free.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/cowan-lake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Wilmington?
Yes, RV delivery in Wilmington is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if you've never towed a trailer. Many local hosts will deliver to Cowan Lake State Park, Caesar Creek State Park, nearby private RV resorts, or even your driveway, then level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius of Wilmington. Use the Delivery filter to instantly see hosts who offer setup. Pro tip: choose delivery for your first trip so you can focus on s'mores, not stabilizer jacks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20OhioHow far can I travel from Wilmington on an RV trip?
Wilmington's location near I-71 and US-68 makes it one of Ohio's best launch pads for an RV road trip. From Wilmington you can reach Hocking Hills State Park in about 90 minutes, Red River Gorge in Kentucky in around 3 hours, Lake Erie's Cedar Point in roughly 3.5 hours, and the Great Smoky Mountains in about 6 hours. Cincinnati and Dayton are each under an hour away for easy city day trips. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll find plenty of RV rental with unlimited mileage options if you're planning a longer loop. Check the listing details to match your route, and message hosts directly for custom mileage add-ons before you book.
transportation.ohio.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Wilmington, OH?
You're spoiled for choice with campgrounds near Wilmington. Cowan Lake State Park sits about 10 minutes from town and offers electric sites, a swimming beach, and pet-friendly loops along a quiet 700-acre lake. Caesar Creek State Park, about 20 minutes west, has a large electric campground, a marina, and dozens of miles of trails. Several private RV resorts and county parks in Clinton and Warren counties round out the options with full hookups and family amenities. For a longer drive, East Fork State Park southeast of Cincinnati adds hundreds more sites. Book Ohio state park sites through the official ReserveOhio system up to 6 months in advance for the best selection.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/cowan-lake-state-parkWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Wilmington?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Wilmington, with the sweet spots being May, September, and the first three weeks of October. Summer highs run in the mid 80s with humid afternoons, while spring and fall deliver crisp 60s to low 70s and beautiful foliage around Cowan Lake. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with modest snowfall, so many local campgrounds reduce services from late October until mid-April. Local insider tip: target the last weekend of September when fall colors peak around Caesar Creek and crowds thin out dramatically. Book your RV 8 to 12 weeks ahead for these peak weekends to lock in the widest selection.
weather.gov/iln/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Wilmington?
Wilmington is one of the easiest places in the country for first time renting an RV. The roads around Clinton County are flat, wide, and well-signed, and I-71 gives you long straight stretches to get comfortable before turning off toward a campground. Every RVezy host provides an in-person walkthrough at pickup, covering generator, slide-outs, water, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who delivers and sets up at your site. You're also backed by 24/7 roadside assistance the entire trip. Pro tip: take a short practice loop near the Wilmington Air Park area, where low traffic and big lots make it easy to get comfortable.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Wilmington booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or tow is one phone call away whether you're at Cowan Lake or out near Hocking Hills. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip for booking or platform questions, and your host is typically just a text away for quick how-do-I-use-this questions. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before pickup. Pro tip: do a quick fluid and tire check before heading out, so small issues don't become trip issues.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Wilmington RV rental into Canada or other states?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Wilmington RV hosts allow travel throughout the continental U.S., so an RV road trip from Wilmington to Tennessee, the Carolinas, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, or the Smokies is absolutely doable. Cross-border travel into Canada may be possible with some hosts, but you'll need written host approval in advance because insurance and protection coverage must be confirmed for the route. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection doesn't extend there. Always message the host from the listing page before booking to confirm your exact route, and bring your passport for any northern crossings. Pro tip: I-71 north from Wilmington connects you straight to Cleveland and Lake Erie.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Wilmington?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know your RV class. Class B campervans rented in Wilmington average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined), and Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 mpg. Ohio gas prices typically sit near the national average, with diesel and unleaded readily available at the truck stops and Speedway stations along I-71 at the Wilmington exit. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop around southern Ohio in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $240 in fuel at recent prices. Pro tip: fill up in Wilmington before heading into Hocking Hills, where rural prices often run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wilmington?
For the best sites, book 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage in October. Ohio State Park campgrounds like Cowan Lake and Caesar Creek use the official ReserveOhio system, which opens reservations 6 months in advance to the day, and lakefront and pet-loop sites at Cowan can disappear within minutes for July 4th and Labor Day weekends. Private RV resorts and county parks near Wilmington book through their own systems and tend to fill 4 to 8 weeks out. Weeknight stays are far easier and often allow walk-ups. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target Friday morning to grab Cowan Lake's premium electric sites the moment they open.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/stay-at-a-state-park/camp-at-a-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like in and around Wilmington?
Driving an RV around Wilmington is genuinely easy. Clinton County is rolling farmland with wide rural routes like SR 73, US-68, and SR 380, and I-71 runs straight through, so you'll have minimal stress and few tight turns. Watch for posted low clearances under older railroad bridges in downtown Wilmington, and avoid the narrow lanes through Waynesville and Lebanon's historic districts in larger Class A rigs. Winter can bring occasional snow and freezing rain, so check the National Weather Service Wilmington office forecast before December through March trips. Pro tip: use the wide truck routes near the Wilmington Air Park to practice cornering and parking before heading to the campground.
weather.gov/iln/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Wilmington?
Wilmington-area campgrounds are well equipped for a comfortable RV trip. Cowan Lake and Caesar Creek State Parks offer electric hookups (typically 30 and 50 amp on many sites), hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, potable water fill taps, and laundry. Private RV resorts in the area add full hookups, pools, and Wi-Fi at many sites. Free dump stations are available at both state parks, and you can top off fresh water at the campground entrance before departure. Cell signal is generally strong on major carriers throughout the area. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-safe hose and a 30 to 50 amp adapter to cover any site you book, plus a surge protector for peace of mind.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/caesar-creek-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with RVs in Wilmington?
Most RVs listed in Wilmington come trip-ready with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave), bathroom with shower, dinette that converts to a bed, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for the listed sleep count. Motorhome rental Wilmington options often include a generator, awning, and a TV with antenna, while many travel trailers add a power tongue jack and stabilizer. Wi-Fi varies, so if you're working remotely, bring a personal hotspot. Each listing shows a full amenity checklist and photos so you know exactly what's included. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and confirm seatbelt count if your group includes kids, since not every seat in an RV is a designated travel seat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20OhioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Wilmington hosts make customization easy. Popular add-ons include generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, outdoor chairs and tables, propane fire pits, and extra propane tanks, typically priced per day or as a flat trip fee. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Wilmington, with delivery available to campgrounds and private addresses for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies range from a set number of free miles per day to unlimited mileage, so match the listing to your route. One-way rentals between Wilmington and another city are sometimes possible; message the host directly from the listing page to ask about routes to Cincinnati, Columbus, or Dayton. Lock in add-ons at booking to guarantee availability.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy's platform. Your card is charged for the booking total according to RVezy's payment schedule, and a refundable security deposit set by the host is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged unless there's an issue. After return, assuming no damage beyond what's covered by your protection plan, the hold is released back to your card. All communication, payments, and deposits flow through RVezy, so never pay a host outside the platform. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, including the odometer and generator hours, so deposit return is fast and friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather if I rent an RV near Wilmington in winter or early spring?
Shoulder-season and winter RV rental in Wilmington is absolutely doable, and many hosts keep their rigs available year-round. Look for listings that mention heated and enclosed holding tanks, a working furnace, and shore power compatibility, since overnight lows from December through February regularly drop into the teens and 20s. Many Ohio state park campgrounds, including Cowan Lake, offer year-round electric sites, though water at the spigot is typically shut off from roughly November to April, so fill your fresh tank before arrival. Pack a heated drinking hose, a small space heater for shore-power nights, and RV antifreeze. Pro tip: winter weekends at Caesar Creek are quiet, scenic, and often less expensive than peak season.
