Camping near Konawa, Oklahoma
Konawa sits in Seminole County in south-central Oklahoma, roughly between Ada and Seminole. The town is best known for Konawa Reservoir, a 1,350-acre lake owned by Oklahoma Gas and Electric that was constructed to provide cooling for a nearby gas-fired power plant and impounds Jumper Creek about two miles east of the city. The lake has approximately 20 miles of shoreline, concrete boat ramps, a fishing dock, and is stocked with a variety of fish.
RV travellers use Konawa as a low-key base for lake days and as a jumping-off point to larger destinations within a short drive. Ada and Seminole are less than 30 minutes away and offer larger-town services like a Walmart Superstore, Home Depot, restaurants, and entertainment. Oklahoma City is roughly 90 minutes northwest.
Campground options close to town are compact and practical rather than resort-style. Scissortail RV Park, Twin Lakes RV Park, and The Community RV Park handle full-hookup overnights, Soggy Bottom Trails Pub & Campground layers ATV and river access onto its sites, and Holdenville City Lake adds a municipal lakefront option about 30 miles northeast.
Things to do around Konawa
Fishing drives most trips here. Anglers come for northern largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead and blue catfish, bluegill, hybrid striped bass, and white and black crappie, among other species. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation manages the fishery as a trophy bass lake with special regulations, and warm water discharged from the power plant keeps winter fishing productive.
The lake is open for full watersports use. Water skiers and personal watercraft are allowed, though houseboats are prohibited. A swimming beach, picnic tables, grills, and on-site restrooms round out day-use options, and the lake is open to the public at no charge.
Off the water, Soggy Bottom Trails offers side-by-side and ATV routes with river access, and Holdenville City Lake adds primitive shoreline camping, boating, and fishing. Day trips to Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur put another set of lakes, springs, and hiking within roughly an hour.

Summer is the busiest stretch on and around Lake Konawa. Weekends see steady boat traffic, water-ski runs, and heavy use of the swim beach. The warm season runs roughly June through September, and it is the most popular window for lake trips, though afternoon highs regularly push into the mid-90s and humidity is high.
Spring and fall are the more comfortable RV windows. Spring brings the strongest fishing and the greenest landscape but also the most severe weather: Oklahoma's peak tornado activity falls in April, May, and early June, with May the single most active month, and a secondary peak occurs in the autumn when the jet stream returns. A weather radio is worth packing.
Winter is quiet. Picnicking, swimming, fishing, and boating facilities at Lake Konawa are available year-round with no fees charged, so shoulder-season and cold-weather stays are workable, but expect short days, cold snaps, and occasional ice storms. Book earlier for spring bass tournaments and summer holiday weekends.
How to book campgrounds near Konawa
Private RV parks around Konawa, including Scissortail RV Park, Twin Lakes RV Park, and The Community RV Park, are booked directly with the park by phone or through their websites and listings on platforms like Campendium, RV Life, or Good Sam. Soggy Bottom Trails Pub & Campground takes reservations directly and lists availability through Hipcamp.
Holdenville City Lake is owned by the city of Holdenville and offers boat ramps, fishing docks, RV sites with electric and water hookups, a dump station, and restrooms; sites can be reserved through the city.
For the nearest national park option, Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur handles bookings through Recreation.gov. Reservable sites include group areas at Rock Creek, Central, and Cold Springs, all other sites at Cold Springs, Buckhorn Loop C, and The Point Upper Loop, with reservations open up to 360 days in advance, a two-day minimum on weekends and three-day minimum on holidays.
What to expect on the ground
Konawa itself is a small town. It sits about seven miles from the lake area and has a local grocery store, dollar stores, and small-town amenities; plan bigger resupplies in Ada or Seminole. Cell coverage around the lake is usable but not uniform.
Expect basic lake infrastructure rather than a full state-park setup. Konawa is operated by OG&E and contains boat ramps and picnic areas, with no camping on the OG&E lake property itself and no day-use fees. Overnight RV stays happen at nearby private parks and at Holdenville City Lake, not on the OG&E shoreline.
Roads in the area are mostly two-lane state highways. Summer thunderstorms can drop heavy rain quickly, so watch low-water crossings. Bring shade, bug spray, and a full fresh-water tank if heading to primitive sites.
