Camping near Pocola, Oklahoma
Pocola sits in Le Flore County on the Oklahoma-Arkansas border, directly across the Poteau River from Fort Smith, Arkansas. The town is best known as a casino and highway stop off I-540, but its real value for RV travelers is location: it puts the Arkansas River Valley, the Ouachita National Forest foothills, and Lake Wister all within a short drive.
RV options range from full-hookup commercial parks to lakeside state-park campgrounds south of town. Lake Wister State Park in southeast Oklahoma offers five camping areas around 115 miles of scenic shoreline, with RV sites offering full hook-ups or water and electric only, plus tent sites and cabins. Big Foote Campground, William O Darby RV Community, Long Lake Resort and RV Park, Lakeside RV Campground, and Crabtree RV Park are the closest options near town, most offering pull-through sites, electric and water service, and easy interstate access for larger rigs.
For state-park camping, Lake Wister State Park is the primary regional draw. It sits south of Pocola and offers multiple camping areas around the lake, plus a water spray park, a popular destination for children and adults alike.
Things to do near Pocola
Fort Smith is minutes away across the state line. The Fort Smith National Historic Site preserves frontier and U.S. Marshals history, and the United States Marshals Museum, Fort Smith Trolley Museum, and downtown farmers market round out a full day of in-town activities.
Outdoor trips lean south and east. Lake Wister offers a variety of activities including hiking, camping, biking, boating and water skiing on the 7,300 surface acres of the lake, with fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie and trails climbing into the Ouachita foothills. The Ouachita National Forest extends between Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma with hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, including scenic drives such as the Winding Stair National Scenic Byway.
For a quirky side trip, the Heavener Runestone, believed to be a land claim made by a Viking explorer prior to 1000 A.D., is located in Heavener Runestone State Park near the city of Heavener.

The area has a humid subtropical climate with very large seasonal temperature contrasts. Summers are hot, while winters are cold. Spring is the wettest season and occasional snowfall occurs in winter. Summer highs regularly reach the low 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, and heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can sometimes occur during the warmer months. Spring is the wettest stretch of the year, so RV travelers should watch for severe weather, including hail and occasional tornadoes.
Fall is the most comfortable season for camping. September through early November brings warm days, cool nights, and lower rainfall, and the hardwood forests of the Ouachita foothills turn color through October. This is peak season at Lake Wister and along the regional trail systems.
Winters are short but can turn cold and wet, with light snowfall possible from December through February. At Lake Wister State Park, camping is only available March through November, so shoulder-season and winter travelers should confirm which loops are open before arriving.
How to book campgrounds near Pocola
Reservations at Lake Wister State Park must be made online through the Oklahoma State Parks reservation system, run by ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Weekends in spring and fall fill quickly, so book early for holiday weekends.
Private RV parks around Pocola, including Big Foote Campground, William O Darby RV Community, Long Lake Resort and RV Park, Lakeside RV Campground, and Crabtree RV Park, are typically booked directly through the park by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet policies at the time of booking.
For U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites around Wister Lake, reservations, permits and activities at Wister Lake are booked as official reservations on Recreation.gov.
What to expect on arrival
Pocola is a small highway town, and services cluster along US-271 and near the I-540 interchange. Fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supplies are easiest to source in Fort Smith, a short drive across the river. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Pocola but weakens in the Ouachita foothills to the south.
Most private RV parks near Pocola are working-traveler oriented, meaning level gravel or paved pads, full or partial hookups, and quick highway access rather than resort amenities. Both modern (full-hookup) and semi-modern (electric and water hookup) sites are available at Lake Wister, with lakeside options ranging from full-hookup pads on Quarry Island to more basic water-and-electric sites.
Expect summer heat and humidity: awnings, shade, and adequate air conditioning matter. Pack for biting insects near the lake and river bottoms from late spring through early fall.
