Campgrounds near Carlton, Oregon
Carlton sits in Yamhill County in Oregon's northern Willamette Valley, surrounded by the rolling vineyards of the Yamhill-Carlton American Viticultural Area. The town is about 35 miles southwest of Portland and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, bordered by the Coast Range to the west, the Chehalem Mountains to the north, and the Dundee Hills to the east. The small downtown is walkable, and most RV travelers use Carlton as a base for wine country, river access on the Willamette, and easy day trips to Newberg, McMinnville, and Salem.
RV options range from in-town parks to state-park campgrounds within a short drive. McMinnville is a center of the well-developed Oregon wine industry in the Willamette Valley, which has hundreds of wineries and vineyards. Olde Stone Village RV Park and Valley's Edge RV Park serve as practical hookup bases close to tasting rooms, while Dundee Hills Resort offers a vineyard-country setting east of Carlton. For a larger park experience along the Willamette River, Champoeg State Heritage Area and the Horse Group - Willamette Mission State Park site are both reachable in under an hour.
Things to do near Carlton
Wine tasting drives the visitor calendar. Carlton's downtown has roughly 20 tasting rooms, with dozens more vineyards in the surrounding hills, anchored by the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Main Street is walkable, with most tasting rooms steps from one another, so visitors can park once and stroll between pours, shops, and cafes.
Outdoor recreation is close at hand. Visitors can walk or bike on the paved trails that pass historical landmarks and hug the river, play the 18-hole disc golf course under the oak trees, or fish or kayak from the dock on the Willamette River at Champoeg State Heritage Area. Willamette Mission State Park offers almost 15 miles of trails on foot or horseback, and the nation's largest black cottonwood sits on the shores of Mission Lake. McMinnville's shops, restaurants, and the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum are a short drive south.

Summers in the area are short, warm, dry, and mostly clear, and winters are very cold, wet, and mostly cloudy. July and August are the driest months and the busiest for camping and wine touring, with sites filling weeks ahead. Spring brings vineyard bud break and green hills, but rain remains frequent through May.
Seasonal closures matter for trip planning. At Willamette Mission State Park, reservable facilities are closed Oct. 1 through May 14. The park floods in winter and mosquitoes can be problematic at dusk due to proximity to water, so late spring and summer visits are recommended, with shaded trails helping keep riders and hikers cool. Champoeg, by contrast, operates year-round, with B Loop, yurts, and cabins open through the off-season while A Loop closes seasonally.
Fall is harvest season in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and ridges around the area help shelter the vineyards. Expect crowded tasting rooms on September and October weekends, cooler nights, and the return of valley rain by November.

Great set up. We ended up not using some of the add ons as we got cleared out early due to smoke/fires and were reimbursed appropriately. Very professional communications. Nice for a small family of 4 for the weekend or more. 8 YO boy enjoyed it too: “dad do you think you could quit work and we could just drive around in this van for the rest of the year?”

Thanks Radek and Anna for the amazing experience!

How to book campgrounds near Carlton
State-park sites in the area are reserved through Oregon State Parks via the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations at Champoeg State Heritage Area are accepted up to 6 months in advance via Oregon State Parks. Booking that far ahead is recommended for summer weekends and during the September and October harvest period.
The Horse Group - Willamette Mission State Park site has stricter rules. Willamette Mission horse camp sites are available by reservation only, and walk-ins are not allowed. The campground is open for camping May 15 through September 30, with reservations required for horse camp and group tent sites. Private parks such as Olde Stone Village RV Park, Dundee Hills Resort, and Valley's Edge RV Park are typically booked directly through the operator and may offer monthly stays.
Firewood restrictions are in effect due to the emerald ash borer quarantine: purchase firewood locally within 10 miles or use certified heat-treated wood.
What to expect
Most RV travelers staying in or near Carlton split time between quiet evenings at the campground and daytime visits to tasting rooms, river parks, and small towns. Roads through the AVA are narrow, two-lane, and winding in places, so larger rigs are usually parked at the campground while drivers use a tow vehicle or shuttle for wine touring.
Campground amenities vary widely. At Champoeg, the campground features paved sites with electric and water connections, plus amenities including hot showers, clean restrooms, and a dump station. At Willamette Mission, flush restrooms are located throughout the park, though showers are not available. Private RV parks in and around Carlton generally offer full hookups.
Champoeg sits near I-5, so some traffic noise is audible, but most reviewers report it does not interfere with sleep. Mosquitoes can be noticeable at dusk near river sites in early summer.

Many Yamhill County hosts also bundle bedding kits or camp chairs at no extra charge, adding real value to your booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carlton%2C%20OregonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Carlton, OR?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Carlton, Oregon. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or travel trailer booked on RVezy, regardless of size. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home country license. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the requirements really are.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Carlton RV rental?
Every RV rental in Carlton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the wine country roads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip and is built into your booking, not something the host chooses. During checkout you'll pick from different coverage levels so you can match the plan to your comfort and budget. While this isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens. That backup makes a big difference for first-time renters heading into the Coast Range or up to Mount Hood.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Carlton RV trip?
Booking your Carlton RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, and how much you can recover after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You don't need to dig through individual listings to find policy details; everything is handled at the platform level. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so you're not left stranded. If your plans shift, just log into your RVezy account and follow the cancellation flow.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Carlton, OR?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Carlton is easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs, with some accepting cats and other pets too. Yamhill County is genuinely dog-friendly: many Carlton tasting rooms along Main Street welcome leashed pups on their patios, and nearby Bald Peak State Park has wide-open trails perfect for stretching paws after a drive. Champoeg State Heritage Area, about 35 minutes east, also allows leashed dogs on its riverside paths. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or weight notes so you're set up for a smooth pickup.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=126Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or rental in Carlton?
Yes, RV delivery in Carlton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for wine country travelers who'd rather skip driving altogether. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer at your campground, vineyard stay, or a private driveway in Yamhill County. They'll level the rig, connect hookups if available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this, and check the listing for the delivery radius and fee, which is usually based on distance from their home base. It's a game-changer for first-time RV renters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carlton%2C%20OregonHow far can I drive on my Carlton RV trip?
Plenty far, especially since Carlton sits in a sweet spot in the Willamette Valley with quick access to Oregon's best destinations. Many hosts on RVezy offer generous mileage packages, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for longer loops. From Carlton you're about 40 miles (under an hour) to Portland, 55 miles to the Pacific Coast at Pacific City, 50 miles to Salem with Silver Falls State Park another 25 miles east, and roughly 130 miles south to Eugene. Mount Hood is around a 2.5 hour drive east. Always check the listing's daily mileage allowance and per-mile overage rate, then message the host if you're planning a bigger loop so they can quote a custom package.
tripcheck.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Carlton, OR?
Carlton has fantastic options within a short drive. Champoeg State Heritage Area (about 35 minutes east) offers electric and full-hookup sites, hot showers, and riverside paths along the Willamette. Olde Stone Village RV Park in McMinnville provides easy access to downtown wineries, and Bald Peak State Park sits on a ridge with sweeping valley views (day-use). For coastal RV camping near Carlton, Cape Lookout State Park (about 90 minutes west) has full-hookup and electric sites right by the beach. Book Champoeg and Cape Lookout through the Oregon State Parks reservation system up to six months ahead, especially for summer weekends.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=113When is the best time to visit Carlton, OR in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Carlton RV trip is mid-May through mid-October, when the Willamette Valley dries out and warms up. Summer highs typically run in the low 80s Fahrenheit with cool 50-degree nights, perfect for sleeping with the windows open. September and early October are arguably even better: harvest season at the wineries, golden light, fewer crowds, and daytime highs in the low 70s. Winters are mild but wet, with highs in the upper 40s and frequent rain (the area sees roughly 40 to 45 inches a year). Locals know late September is the secret window: warm days, vineyard activity in full swing, and campgrounds without the August crush.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host walks you through a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, leveling, slide-outs, the propane system, the water tanks, and the dump procedure. You can message the host beforehand with questions, and many even share short videos before your trip. Carlton is an ideal first-timer base because the roads through Yamhill County are flat, well-maintained, and traffic-light compared to mountain or coastal driving. Stick with smaller Class C motorhomes or travel trailers under 25 feet if you're nervous, and consider a host who delivers. By the end of day one, most renters feel completely at home.
oregon.gov/odot/Safety/Pages/index.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every Carlton RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck in a vineyard parking lot or on Highway 18 heading to the coast. Roadside support handles flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also a direct resource and usually picks up quickly since they know their RV inside and out. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Snap photos of any warning lights right away and message your host; many small issues get sorted in just a few minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Carlton, OR?
Carlton is a launching pad for some of the Pacific Northwest's best routes. A classic RV road trip from Carlton runs west on Highway 18 to the Three Capes Scenic Loop (about 65 miles), hitting Cape Lookout, Cape Kiwanda, and Pacific City. The Columbia River Gorge loop (about 110 miles east through Portland) brings you to Multnomah Falls and Hood River. Crater Lake National Park sits about 270 miles south, an easy two-day route via Eugene. The Oregon Coast drive south to Newport and Florence covers 130 to 175 miles of jaw-dropping scenery. Cross-border travel into Canada may be possible with host approval, but travel into Mexico isn't supported on RVezy rentals.
traveloregon.com/things-to-do/trip-ideas/scenic-drives/How much will I spend on fuel for a Carlton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables in your RV camping Carlton budget, so plan ahead. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect 10 to 14 MPG combined. Regular gasoline in the Carlton and McMinnville area typically runs above the national average, since Oregon prices tend to track higher than the US average. For a 300-mile wine country loop in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $170 in fuel. Fill up in Newberg or McMinnville rather than in Carlton itself for better prices and selection.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Carlton?
For peak season (June through Labor Day) at Oregon State Parks like Champoeg or Cape Lookout, book six months out to the day, the moment the reservation window opens through the Oregon State Parks reservation system. Private parks near Carlton and McMinnville often fill up two to three months ahead on summer weekends. Shoulder season (April, May, and October) is far more forgiving; you can often book two to four weeks out and still get great spots. Harvest weekends in September draw big wine crowds to Carlton and the Yamhill Valley, so lock in your campground as soon as you book your RV.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=v.page&id=104What are the driving conditions like around Carlton, OR?
Driving conditions around Carlton are friendly to RVs most of the year. The valley roads (Highways 47, 99W, and 18) are flat, paved, and well-signed, with manageable shoulders and few tight squeezes. Watch for narrow two-lane stretches on rural wine country roads and slow-moving farm equipment during harvest. Heading west to the coast, Highway 18 climbs over the Coast Range with a few gradual grades; nothing extreme, but downshift on the descents. Winter brings rain and occasional fog rather than heavy snow at this elevation. Check TripCheck.com (Oregon Department of Transportation's road info site) before you head out, especially for Highway 26 or Highway 6 if you're routing toward Mount Hood or Tillamook.
tripcheck.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Carlton?
Most campgrounds near Carlton offer solid amenities for a comfortable stay. Full hookup sites (electric, water, sewer) are standard at private parks in McMinnville and the surrounding Yamhill Valley, with 30 and 50 amp service available. Oregon State Parks like Champoeg have hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and potable water fill-ups, with many sites offering electric and water hookups. For dumping and freshwater on the road, McMinnville and Newberg have public options, and most state park campgrounds let day-users pay a small fee to dump. Bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator; older park hookups occasionally run hot on pressure.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=v.page&id=132What's typically included inside a Carlton RV rental?
Carlton motorhome rentals come ready to roll. Most listings include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 depending on size, climate control, and seatbelted seats for travel. Class C and Class A rigs typically have a generator for off-grid power, and many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an outdoor awning. Wi-Fi varies; some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others recommend using your phone. Bedding, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats are often offered as add-ons or included free. Check each listing's amenities section to see exactly what's provided, and message the host if you need something specific like a coffee maker or high chair.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carlton%2C%20OregonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Carlton hosts offer thoughtful add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats, portable grills, bike racks, and generator hour packages. Some hosts even offer wine country welcome baskets. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Carlton, McMinnville, or Newberg, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Delivery is available from many hosts, with fees typically based on distance. Mileage policies vary by listing, with overage rates clearly shown before you book. Ask about a generator add-on if you're planning to dry camp at a vineyard.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Carlton%2C%20OregonHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Carlton RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through RVezy, so there's no cash or check exchanged with your host. You'll pay the trip total (rental, fees, protection plan) by credit card when you book. The refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment as a pre-authorization on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as the rig comes back in the same condition with the same fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after your trip. Take dated photos and a quick video at pickup and dropoff, top off the fuel and propane, and empty the gray and black tanks if your host requests it; that's the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast.
