Campgrounds and RV parks near Donald, OR

Champoeg State Heritage Area is the main on-site draw. Paved trails pass historical landmarks, an 18-hole disc golf course sits on the grounds, and visitors can fish or kayak from the Willamette River dock. The park also has a visitor center with exhibits on the Kalapuya people, fur trappers, and the May 2, 1843 vote that established a provisional government for the area. The Willamette River supports fishing and paddling from the park's boat dock, and the heritage area is recognized for birding among its oak groves and prairie habitat. Off-site, families can drive to Newberg and the Dundee Hills for wineries, head into Portland for the zoo and OMSI, or visit Silver Falls State Park to the southeast for waterfall hikes. The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway also passes through the area, offering longer rides through farmland and small towns.

Summer is the prime RV season in the Willamette Valley: dry, warm, and clear. July and August are the driest months of the year, with long evenings well suited to riverside camping. This is also peak demand, and Champoeg in particular fills regularly because of its proximity to Portland. Booking several weeks ahead is advised for any weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Late spring and early fall are quieter and still pleasant, with mild days and cooler nights. Spring brings green fields and active birding, while September and early October bring harvest-season visits to Willamette Valley wineries. Winter is wet. December records the highest average rainfall in the Salem area, and fog is common on cold mornings. At Champoeg, B Loop, yurts, and cabins remain open year-round while A Loop closes seasonally. Wildfire smoke from late-summer fires can occasionally degrade Willamette Valley air quality, so RV travelers should check Oregon DEQ air quality reports during August and September trips.

Champoeg offers flush toilets, hot showers for registered campers, a dump station, and potable water throughout, with paved sites carrying electric and water connections. The park sells firewood and ice on-site. Loops are forested and generally spacious, with B Loop noted as more private than A Loop. Some traffic noise from I-5 is audible but is not typically a sleep issue. Oregon is under an emerald ash borer quarantine. Firewood must be purchased locally within 10 miles of the campground or be certified heat-treated, and ash, olive, and white fringe tree wood is restricted across Oregon State Parks. Pets are allowed on leash in most areas, including campgrounds. Drones and metal detectors are not permitted at Champoeg. During dry months, check current fire restrictions before lighting a campfire, as Willamette Valley land managers may impose seasonal bans.
