Campgrounds and RV parks near Elgin, OR

Elgin sits in northeast Oregon at the edge of the Grande Ronde Valley, framed by the Wallowa-Whitman and Umatilla National Forests and the Blue Mountains. The town works well as an RV staging point between Interstate 84 and Highway 82, the main route into Wallowa County and the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Most campgrounds within an hour of town are river-oriented, sitting on the Wallowa or Grande Ronde. The closest public option is Minam State Recreation Area, located off Oregon Route 82 around 15 miles northeast of Elgin, a primitive Oregon State Parks campground along the Wallowa River. Hilgard Junction State Park sits next to Interstate 84 at its intersection with Highway 244 near the Grande Ronde River, to the west. Both are state-run, both are primitive, and neither offers hookups. For RVers who want full hookups, Grande Hot Springs RV Resort near Union offers pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service and geothermal soaking pools. The Historic Union Hotel and RV Park provides a smaller in-town base in Union, and Wallowa Valley Stay N Wash offers practical services on the Highway 82 corridor.

Both Minam and Hilgard Junction are listed by Oregon State Parks as first-come, first-served campgrounds. Hilgard Junction is currently a first come first serve campground; campers must be physically at the park to get an empty site, and reservations cannot be made at this time. Arriving early on Friday during summer weekends is the safest approach, especially around steelhead runs and rafting season. Grande Hot Springs RV Resort takes reservations directly through its own booking system, and advance booking is recommended during peak summer months. The only way to book the yurts is through Airbnb. The Historic Union Hotel and RV Park and Wallowa Valley Stay N Wash are smaller private operations; contact them directly to confirm availability, rig length limits, and hookup configuration before traveling.
