Campgrounds near Estacada
Estacada sits on Oregon Highway 224 at the western edge of the Mt. Hood National Forest, about 30 miles southeast of Portland along the Clackamas River. The Clackamas River Ranger District east of town covers the western slopes of Mt. Hood National Forest and includes wilderness areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, popular lakes, and many campgrounds and trails. The town serves as the staging point for trips up the Clackamas corridor and into the Timothy Lake area.
RV travelers have a mix of options close in. Promontory Park Campground sits on the North Fork Reservoir about seven miles east of Estacada on Highway 224 and is operated by Portland General Electric. Clackamas River RV Park provides a small private base near the river. For full-hookup RV resorts within a short drive, Sandy Riverfront RV Resort, Portland Fairview RV Park, and Mt Hood Village RV Resort are all reachable on Highways 26 and 224.
The Clackamas corridor was heavily impacted by the 2020 Riverside Fire, and the burn scar is evident along Highway 224 and the upper Clackamas River. Several Forest Service campgrounds in that corridor remain closed or are being rebuilt, so confirm status before booking deeper into the canyon.
Things to do near Estacada
The Clackamas River is the main draw. Rafters, canoeists, and kayakers can run the sometimes wild Clackamas, and for fishing, Estacada Lake offers a boat ramp and an ADA fishing dock, and the Clackamas River has steelhead and Chinook runs. Promontory Park, perched above the North Fork Reservoir, features a barrier-free fishing area and a store with groceries, ice, fishing tackle, boat rentals, and fuel.
Families use Milo McIver State Park as a base for hiking, horseback riding, and disc golf. Milo also sports a world-class, 27-hole disc golf course at the Riverbend Day-use Area. The Clackamas Fish Hatchery is located at McIver Park, and self-guided tours of the hatchery guide visitors through the life-cycle of Chinook salmon and steelhead.
Further east, Timothy Lake offers a loop trail that links to the Pacific Crest Trail, with boating, swimming, and trout fishing in season.

Most public campgrounds around Estacada are seasonal. Promontory Park is open from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the second full weekend in September. Milo McIver State Park accepts reservations up to 6 months in advance, with all sites open March 20 to October 31. Forest Service sites in the Clackamas River Ranger District generally follow a late-May to mid-September window.
Summer is dry and warm with long evenings, making it the peak window for river floats, fishing, and forest hiking. Sites fill weeks in advance for July and August weekends, so plan early. Spring brings green understory and high water on the Clackamas, which is prime for skilled whitewater paddlers but cold for swimming.
Fall shoulder weeks in September and early October bring lighter crowds and good fishing, but rain returns quickly. Winter is wet and overcast at low elevations and snowy higher in the forest; most developed campgrounds are closed, and Highway 224 can see slides and washouts after heavy storms. Several campgrounds in the Clackamas River Ranger District were damaged during the 2020 Riverside Fire, so verify open status before planning fall or off-season trips up the canyon.

Took the trailer out for a long holiday weekend. Torrey and Nick were super nice and helpful. We called with a few questions and they were helpful and got us up and running. Highly recommend!

Great set up. We ended up not using some of the add ons as we got cleared out early due to smoke/fires and were reimbursed appropriately. Very professional communications. Nice for a small family of 4 for the weekend or more. 8 YO boy enjoyed it too: “dad do you think you could quit work and we could just drive around in this van for the rest of the year?”

Thanks Radek and Anna for the amazing experience!

How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator. Milo McIver State Park books through the Oregon State Parks system. Campsite reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance at oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com, and are strongly recommended for summer weekends.
Promontory Park has its own window run by Portland General Electric. Online campsite reservations open the first business day in January at 8 a.m., and phone or email reservations open the first business day in March at 8 a.m. For Forest Service campgrounds up the Clackamas River, including those at Timothy Lake, reservations are made at recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.
Private RV resorts such as Clackamas River RV Park, Sandy Riverfront RV Resort, Portland Fairview RV Park, and Mt Hood Village RV Resort take direct bookings through their own websites or phone lines and typically accept reservations year-round.
What to expect on the ground
Sites along the Clackamas vary in size. Promontory Park retains its vintage character, with narrow, winding roads and sites best suited for tents or compact camping units. The 50-site facility operates seasonally from Memorial Day through September, offering both tent and RV camping with electric and water hookups for rigs up to 35 feet. Drivers of larger fifth wheels and Class A coaches should look at private parks closer to Sandy or Welches.
Cell service is patchy in the McIver area and drops out entirely deeper into the Mt. Hood National Forest. Download maps before leaving town.
Firewood restrictions are in force. The park area is within the Clackamas County permanent quarantine zone for ash, olive, and white fringe tree materials, and these tree materials, including firewood, must stay within the county to help slow the spread of the emerald ash borer. Buy firewood near the campsite rather than hauling it in.
