Camping near Gaston, Oregon
Gaston sits in Washington County between Forest Grove and the Yamhill County wine country, with Henry Hagg Lake just west of town and the Coast Range foothills rising beyond. The area mixes vineyard country, working forest, and reservoir recreation, and it works well as a base for RV travelers who want quick access to Portland (roughly 30 miles northeast) without staying in the metro area.
Overnight options near Gaston fall into three groups. Private RV parks like Dundee Hills Resort and Olde Stone Village RV Park serve wine-country travelers with hookups and paved sites. Dairy Creek East and Dairy Creek West at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park provide full-hookup state park camping in the Coast Range foothills near Buxton. Tillamook State Forest - Browns OHV Camp serves off-highway vehicle users staging into the forest trail network.
Note that Henry Hagg Lake itself is day-use only; the reservoir is managed for picnicking, fishing, and boating, and overnight camping is not permitted on the lake.
Things to do around Gaston
Henry Hagg Lake anchors local recreation. The 1,113-acre reservoir supports rainbow trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, and yellow perch, with two boat ramps and more than 15 miles of hiking trails through Scoggins Valley Park.
L.L. Stub Stewart State Park connects to the paved Banks-Vernonia State Trail and adds mountain bike trails, two disc golf courses, equestrian trails, an off-leash dog area, and amateur-astronomy viewing on dark nights. Tillamook State Forest offers more than 250 miles of OHV routes for motorcycles, quads, 4WDs, and side-by-sides, plus non-motorized hiking and fishing along the Wilson River.
The surrounding Tualatin Valley and Chehalem Mountain area is dense with wineries and tasting rooms, and Tree to Tree Adventure Park near Hagg Lake is a common family stop.

Summer is the dry, settled window. From late June through September, daytime highs run warm and rainfall drops sharply, with July and August averaging well under half an inch of precipitation. Weekends fill quickly at Stub Stewart and at private RV parks tied to wine-country events, so book well ahead. Fire restrictions in Tillamook State Forest and surrounding lands can tighten through late summer.
Spring and fall are quieter and wetter. Trails stay green, vineyard harvest activity peaks in September and October, and shoulder-season availability is much easier. Hagg Lake day-use facilities open in late April on the first day of fishing season and close in late October, so spring lake access tracks that schedule.
Winter in the Coast Range foothills is cool, overcast, and rainy. Stub Stewart's Dairy Creek campground stays open year-round, but Browns OHV Camp closes from November through March, and dispersed forest roads can be muddy or gated.

How to book near Gaston
Oregon State Parks sites, including Dairy Creek East and Dairy Creek West at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, are reserved through oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com up to six months in advance. Reservations are paid in full at booking, only one RV is allowed per site, and check-in is at 4:00 p.m. with check-out by 1:00 p.m.
Tillamook State Forest - Browns OHV Camp moved to a reservation-only system starting with the 2026 season, also booked through ReserveAmerica, with the campground operating from April 1 through October 31 and a six-month booking window. Campers must bring at least one OHV and display a valid ATV Operating Permit.
Dundee Hills Resort and Olde Stone Village RV Park are private parks and book directly through the operator. Reserve weekends and harvest-season dates early.
What to expect near Gaston
At Stub Stewart, both Dairy Creek loops have paved pads, full hookups at most RV sites, flush toilets, hot showers, and a playground. Sites are spacious and fairly open with limited vegetation between them, and the park enforces a one-RV-per-site rule with metal tent stakes required on the packed-gravel tent pads.
Browns OHV Camp is more rustic, with 28 drive-in sites, vault toilets, and direct trail access. Cell service is spotty along Highway 6 and inside Tillamook State Forest, so download maps and confirm directions before arriving. Most forest roads are narrow and shared with log trucks.
Private parks in the wine-country corridor generally offer level paved sites, Wi-Fi, and 30/50-amp service, but vary in shade and big-rig maneuvering room. Confirm site length and slide-out clearance when booking.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaston%2C%20OregonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Gaston, Oregon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Gaston. Oregon does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers booked through RVezy, including Class A coaches. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Check-in is quick, leaving more time for the drive out to wine country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection or coverage is included with my Gaston RV rental?
Every RV rental in Gaston booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can head toward the coast on Highway 47 with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover most damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens, like a rock chip on the way to Tillamook State Forest. Roadside help is one call away for flat tires, lockouts, or towing. Book confidently knowing support is built in.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Gaston RV rental?
Plans shift, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your Gaston RV trip now. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can change your mind worry-free. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather, which matter in the Pacific Northwest when winter storms occasionally roll through the Coast Range. You can review the current cancellation terms on RVezy's Help Center or within your booking. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best Gaston-area rigs, knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Gaston?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental in Gaston is easy to find on RVezy. Just enable the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats too). Many local campgrounds love four-legged guests, including L.L. Stub Stewart State Park about 25 miles north, which has pet-friendly loops and the paved Banks-Vernonia State Trail right out the door. Henry Hagg Lake just minutes from Gaston also allows leashed dogs at day-use areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees or size limits, and pack a towel for muddy paws after Tualatin Valley vineyard walks.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=129Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or property near Gaston?
Yes, RV delivery in Gaston is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is ideal if you have never towed a trailer or driven a motorhome. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campsite at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, Henry Hagg Lake, Champoeg State Heritage Area, or even a private property or winery field. They will set it up, level it, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so the closer your campsite to Gaston, the more you save.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaston%2C%20OregonHow does mileage work, and can I take a road trip from Gaston?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy. Many Gaston-area hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Gaston. From Gaston you can reach the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach in about 90 minutes (roughly 70 miles), Mount Hood in about 2 hours (around 80 miles), the Columbia River Gorge in about 90 minutes (around 70 miles), and Crater Lake National Park in about 5 hours (around 270 miles). Review the mileage policy on each listing before booking, and message the host if you are planning a longer loop so they can quote you the best rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaston%2C%20OregonWhere are the best campgrounds near Gaston, Oregon?
You are spoiled for choice. Top campgrounds near Gaston include L.L. Stub Stewart State Park (about 25 miles north) with full-hookup RV sites, hiker biker camps, and the Banks-Vernonia State Trail; Scoggins Valley Park at Henry Hagg Lake just minutes away for boating and fishing; Champoeg State Heritage Area (about 30 miles southeast) with riverfront sites along the Willamette; and Elk Creek, Gales Creek, and Jordan Creek campgrounds inside Tillamook State Forest just west of town. For full-hookup convenience and easy Portland access, Stub Stewart is the local favorite for first-time RV campers.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=129When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Gaston?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Gaston, when the Tualatin Valley dries out and daytime highs sit in the 75 to 85 F range with cool 50 F nights perfect for campfires. September is an insider's pick: wine harvest is in full swing at surrounding Willamette Valley vineyards, crowds thin out, and the Coast Range is still green. Spring (April to June) is beautiful but rainier, and winters are mild and wet with highs around 40 to 50 F. Book your Gaston RV trip two to three months out for prime summer weekends.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Gaston?
You'll be just fine, and RVezy is built for first-timers. Every host walks you through the RV at pickup, showing you driving basics, leveling, slide-outs, propane, water, and waste tanks. The roads around Gaston are friendly for new RVers: Highway 47 and Highway 219 are wide, gently winding rural routes with light traffic. Stick to those instead of heading straight into downtown Portland on your first day. Pro tip: if you are nervous about driving, book a host who offers delivery, and your first time renting an RV becomes essentially a vacation rental on wheels parked exactly where you want it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002224053-For-RentersWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you are at Henry Hagg Lake, climbing Highway 26 toward the coast, or pulled over on Highway 47 north of Gaston. Roadside handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. For anything inside the RV (a finicky furnace, a tripped breaker), your host is your first call, and most respond within minutes. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736554-What-is-included-in-the-roadside-assistance-packageCan I drive my Gaston RV rental into Washington, California, or Canada?
Cross-state travel is welcome on most Gaston RV rentals. From Gaston you are about 3.5 hours from Seattle, 10 hours from San Francisco, and roughly 5.5 hours from Vancouver, BC, making regional road trips very doable. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, since insurance coverage does not extend south of the border. Popular cross-border routes from Gaston include the Olympic Peninsula loop and a Northern California redwoods drive down Highway 101.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Gaston?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it's predictable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches 6 to 10 mpg, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Oregon gas prices typically run around $3.80 to $4.50 per gallon, and the closest stations to Gaston are in Forest Grove (about 6 miles) and Hillsboro (about 15 miles). For a 3-night Hagg Lake loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. Note: Oregon allows self-service fueling statewide as of 2023, so you'll pump your own at most stops.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gaston?
For summer weekends, book your campground as soon as you book your RV. Oregon State Parks like L.L. Stub Stewart and Champoeg accept reservations up to six months in advance through the official Oregon State Parks reservation system, and popular weekends fill quickly. Same-day reservations are also available statewide if plans come together last minute. For Henry Hagg Lake's Scoggins Valley Park, reservations go through Washington County. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, set a calendar alert for exactly six months out and you'll have your pick of prime spots.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=reserve.makeWhat are the driving conditions like around Gaston?
Driving around Gaston is relaxing compared to most metro areas. The town sits on rural Highway 47 between Forest Grove and Yamhill, with rolling vineyard country, light traffic, and gentle grades. Watch for two things: tight shoulders on backroads like Patton Valley Road (slow down for oncoming logging trucks), and morning fog in fall and winter in the low Tualatin Valley. If you are heading to the coast via Highway 6, you'll cross the Coast Range with steady grades that are manageable in a motorhome at moderate speeds. Avoid driving into downtown Portland in a large rig: stick to I-5 or Highway 217 if you must cross the metro. Check TripCheck for current conditions before you go.
tripcheck.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Gaston?
Campgrounds near Gaston cover the full spectrum. L.L. Stub Stewart State Park offers full-hookup sites (water, electric, sewer), hot showers, a dump station, flush toilets, and a playground. Champoeg State Heritage Area has full-hookup and electric sites plus a dump station. Scoggins Valley Park at Henry Hagg Lake has restrooms and water but limited hookups, ideal for self-contained RVs. Tillamook State Forest campgrounds (Gales Creek, Elk Creek, Jordan Creek) are more rustic with vault toilets and no hookups. For dumping and freshwater between trips, the dump station at Stub Stewart is the closest reliable option for registered campers.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=129What's included inside a typical Gaston RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Gaston come ready to camp. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many hosts also include linens, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs, and a propane fire pit. Class A and Class C motorhome rentals in Gaston often add a generator, a TV, and sometimes Wi-Fi or a cell booster, helpful in the Coast Range where signal fades. Check each listing's amenity list, and message the host if anything specific (like a coffee maker or BBQ) matters for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaston%2C%20OregonWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect from Gaston hosts?
Hosts in the Gaston area offer plenty of useful add-ons to make your trip smoother. Common extras include delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's home base), generator use, propane fill, bike racks, kayak racks, linens, kitchen kits, outdoor patio mats, and portable BBQs. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in or near Gaston, Forest Grove, or Hillsboro, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Most listings allow pickup mid-morning and return late morning. Pro tip: if you want a campervan rental in Gaston for a weekend wine tour, ask the host about local designated-driver shuttle options.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaston%2C%20OregonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a major credit card, and the host receives funds after your trip starts, so your money stays protected until you are on the road. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (amounts vary by RV type and listing). As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip ends. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with the host at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth and dispute-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Gaston a good idea for first-timers?
It's one of the best family RV trip starting points in Oregon. Gaston is well positioned for a low-stress family adventure: you are about 15 minutes from Henry Hagg Lake for swimming and paddleboarding, 20 minutes from Forest Grove for ice cream stops, and under 2 hours from the kid-friendly tide pools at Cannon Beach. Family-sized Class C motorhomes on RVezy typically sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds, a convertible dinette, and a private bedroom for parents. Use the Sleeps filter to match your crew. Local tip: end your trip at Stub Stewart's disc golf course and playground to burn off the last of the kids' energy before heading home.
