Campgrounds and RV parks near Knappa, OR

The Columbia River dominates outdoor recreation here. Vista Park is a popular paddling spot with access to a wide variety of paddling experiences, from calm back water areas inside Brooks and Steamboat Slough to the larger waters of the mainstem Columbia River. Ship watching is a draw: on any given day up to 10 ships can be found at anchor in the Columbia River along the Astoria waterfront waiting for berths to open upriver, and those ships pass right by Vista Park as they head upstream. Inland, Clatsop State Forest offers gravel forest roads, hiking, and equestrian trails. The Big Tree Trail is accessible from Northrup Creek Horse Camp and winds through the surrounding forest, featuring tall fir trees. Families based near Knappa also drive to Astoria for the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Fort Stevens State Park beaches, and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, all within a short drive west on Highway 30.

The lower Columbia has an oceanic climate with mild, wet winters and cool, drier summers. Rains are very frequent from November to February, while in spring they gradually become less frequent and reach a minimum in July and August, when there are many sunny days. Summer is the prime RV window, with warm days, low rainfall, and reliable road access into the state forest. Late spring through early fall is also the busiest booking window. Reservations at the most popular riverfront sites fill quickly. Skamokawa Vista Park sites fill up almost every weekend during summer, so reservations should be made early, and bookings are accepted up to fourteen months in advance. Shoulder seasons bring fog, wind, and heavy rain off the Pacific. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect saturated forest roads, occasional flooding on low-lying river properties, and short daylight. Travelers should also check current status before heading to DNR sites in Washington, as Tunerville, a remote campground popular with horsepackers and hunters, has been slated for full closure as the state wrangles with a budget crisis. Northrup Creek Horse Camp typically operates from late spring into early fall.

Expect a mix of riverfront and deep-forest camping rather than coastal beachfront. Riverside sites at Skamokawa Vista Park can be exposed: it can get a little windy, so be careful with awnings and consider a wind break. Wooded interior sites trade the view for shelter and quiet. Facilities range widely. Skamokawa Vista Park has 15 full hookup sites, 27 partial hook-up sites and tent sites, 5 yurts, and 1 cabin, plus showers, firewood, and a boat launch, with tennis courts and a playground on the grounds. Northrup Creek Horse Camp keeps things simple with vault toilets, a hand-pump water source, and manure bins, and other DNR campgrounds are even more basic. Cell coverage is unreliable inland, so download maps before leaving Highway 30. Leashes are required at most managed sites.
