Campgrounds and RV parks near Mission, OR

Within a short drive of camp, families can explore the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, a museum focused on the tribes that historically inhabited this area. Downtown Pendleton offers the Pendleton Underground Tours, the Pendleton Woolen Mills, and, each September, the Pendleton Round-Up rodeo. Outdoor options expand quickly once travelers leave town. The park can serve as a base camp for big game hunting, mushrooming, or exploring the miles of national forest within easy driving distance, and the Grande Ronde River near Red Bridge State Wayside is a popular spot for wading and trout fishing. Oregon Trail wagon ruts can be seen at Deadman's Pass Rest Area seven miles northwest of Emigrant Springs, on I-84, and at the U.S. Forest Service Oregon Trail Interpretive Park.

The Mission and Pendleton area has a semi-arid climate with very warm and dry summers and cool, moist winters, with average July highs near 90 and January highs in the low 40s. On average, over 80 percent of yearly precipitation falls between October and May, while July and August are nearly rainless. Sites at private parks like Wildhorse Resort RV Park and Pendleton KOA Journey are typically open year-round, with pool and shoulder amenities scaling back outside summer. Mountain campgrounds nearby follow a much shorter season. Red Bridge State Wayside is open from mid-April to mid-October and runs first-come, first-served. At Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area, some campsites and all cabins are open year-round, but park roads are often snow-covered or icy in winter, and water at campsites and cabins is turned off during winter and is available at the restroom and shower building. Late summer brings wildfire and smoke risk across eastern Oregon, while September weekends fill quickly around the Pendleton Round-Up. Shoulder months in May, June, and September typically offer the best mix of open campgrounds, mild temperatures, and lighter traffic.

Wildhorse Resort RV Park offers full hookups, paved sites, laundry, showers, and a heated pool, with shuttle access to the casino, hotel, restaurants, and golf course. Pendleton KOA Journey provides pull-through RV sites with hookups, tent sites, Wi-Fi, and a playground. State-park sites trend more rustic. Emigrant Springs sits in old-growth forest near the top of the Blue Mountains close to I-84, so expect highway noise alongside spacious sites. All ten of the RV sites at Red Bridge State Wayside are primitive with no hookups or dump station, though water spigots are available for every site and flush toilets are also available. Cell coverage is generally good along the I-84 corridor and weaker in the surrounding national forest.
