Camping near Mount Angel, Oregon
Mount Angel sits in Marion County in the northern Willamette Valley, surrounded by farmland and the foothills of the Cascades. The town is located about 18 miles northeast of Salem, the state capital, and has a population of roughly 3,700. The area is best known for its Bavarian-style architecture, the Mount Angel Abbey on the hilltop above town, and its annual Oktoberfest, which draws large September crowds.
RV travelers have a mix of private parks and public campgrounds within easy reach. Silver Spur RV Park and Phoenix RV Park sit close to town, while Portland-Woodburn RV Park and Riverside RV Park lie along the I-5 corridor north of Mount Angel, making them practical bases for Willamette Valley touring. For a state-park experience with hookups, Champoeg State Heritage Area is roughly 20 minutes northwest along the Willamette River.
Mount Angel also works well as a hub for day trips. Silver Falls State Park sits about 30 minutes east via Silverton, and Highway 214 from Woodburn passes through town on the way.
Things to do near Mount Angel
The signature outing is Silver Falls State Park, about 30 minutes east. It is Oregon's largest state park, covering more than 9,000 acres of forest, creeks, and ten waterfalls. The popular Trail of Ten Falls loops through forested canyons past the cascades, with several leading behind the falling water, and side trails provide shortcuts back to the trailhead for families with younger hikers.
Closer to town, Mount Angel Abbey offers self-guided visits, and the Benedictine Brewery operated by the monks is a short drive away. The Silverton area has the Oregon Garden, one of the state's leading botanical gardens, and next door is the Gordon House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed house in Oregon.
At Champoeg State Heritage Area, visitors can ride paved bike paths along the Willamette, play the 18-hole disc golf course, and tour exhibits on Oregon's first provisional government.

Summer is the prime RV window. Days are warm and dry, smoke from regional wildfires can appear in late summer, and state-park sites fill quickly on weekends. Proximity to the Portland metro makes Champoeg a popular campground that regularly fills in summer, and a weeknight stay or a trip before Memorial Day or after Labor Day gives the best chance of finding a site.
Spring brings high water and lush forest. Silver Falls is open all year and is usually snow-free even in mid-winter, but the falls run full and the wildflowers peak from late March through May. Expect frequent rain and cool nights through April.
Fall is the busiest event period in town. Mount Angel's Oktoberfest begins the second Thursday after Labor Day and runs four days, drawing very large crowds to the Bavarian village. Book RV sites in the area well ahead of that weekend. Winter camping is possible at full-hookup parks, but expect persistent rain and short daylight.

Great set up. We ended up not using some of the add ons as we got cleared out early due to smoke/fires and were reimbursed appropriately. Very professional communications. Nice for a small family of 4 for the weekend or more. 8 YO boy enjoyed it too: “dad do you think you could quit work and we could just drive around in this van for the rest of the year?”

Thanks Radek and Anna for the amazing experience!

Booking and reservation tips
Champoeg is managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation and books through the state's reservation system. Reservations are accepted up to six months in advance, and firewood restrictions are in effect due to the emerald ash borer quarantine in Marion County, so purchase firewood locally or use certified heat-treated wood. The B Loop, yurts, and cabins remain open year-round, while the A Loop closes seasonally.
Private parks near Mount Angel, including Silver Spur RV Park, Phoenix RV Park, Portland-Woodburn RV Park, and Riverside RV Park, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, with shorter booking windows than the state system.
For any trip overlapping Mt. Angel Oktoberfest in mid-September, lock in sites several months out. The festival also lists drop-in dry-camping lots in town for tents and RVs.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Mount Angel are flat, paved, and easy for any RV size. The town itself is compact, with a Bavarian main street, a hilltop abbey, and farmland on all sides. Cell coverage is reliable through the valley and along I-5.
Campground character varies. Champoeg offers a forested, state-park feel along the Willamette, with paved sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and an on-site camp store selling firewood and ice. Proximity to I-5 means some traffic noise is audible, but most reviewers report it does not interfere with sleep. Private parks closer to the freeway corridor lean toward pull-through full-hookup sites suited to overnight stops and longer hub stays.
Day-use parking at popular Oregon state parks generally requires a day-use permit or annual pass, available at park pay stations.
