Campgrounds near West Haven-Sylvan
West Haven-Sylvan is a census-designated place in Washington and Multnomah counties, sitting about five miles west of downtown Portland, Oregon, just north of U.S. Route 26. The community is hillside and primarily residential, so RV camping happens at private parks scattered across the wider Portland metro rather than within the neighborhood itself. Most options are a short drive along Highway 26, I-5, or I-405.
Closest to West Haven-Sylvan is Jantzen Beach RV Park on Hayden Island, sitting on the Columbia River with quick freeway access to both downtown Portland and Vancouver, Washington. Columbia River RV Park lies on the north side of Portland near the airport, while Sun Outdoors Portland South is positioned south of the city for travelers approaching from I-5.
For families with kids, Roamers Rest RV Park LLC in Tualatin offers a quieter suburban setting near the Tualatin River. All five parks function as full-hookup base camps for visiting Forest Park, the Oregon Zoo, Washington Park, and the Columbia River Gorge.
Things to do near West Haven-Sylvan
Forest Park sits about five miles from West Haven-Sylvan and is one of the largest urban forest reserves in the United States, with the Wildwood Trail running through it for roughly 30 miles. The neighboring Washington Park complex holds the Portland Japanese Garden, the International Rose Test Garden, and the Oregon Zoo, all reachable by MAX light rail.
Families traveling by RV often pair Portland sightseeing with day trips up the Columbia River Gorge to Multnomah Falls and over Mount Hood, both within roughly an hour's drive. Sauvie Island, the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, and the Tualatin Hills Nature Park offer flatter walks, beaches, and birdwatching closer to the metro core.

Summer is the dominant RV season around Portland. June through August brings dry, warm weather with highs commonly in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and little rain, especially in July when measurable precipitation falls only a handful of days. Private RV parks in the metro stay open year-round, but campsites at popular Oregon State Parks fill quickly for summer weekends.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler temperatures, more cloud cover, and steadier rain. April and May trade off showers with mild sunny stretches, while September often stays dry before precipitation ramps up in October and November. Wildfire smoke from regional fires can reduce air quality in late summer.
Winter is mild but wet. Snow at valley elevations is uncommon and usually short-lived, but December, January, and February are the wettest months, with frequent overcast skies. Mountain passes east of the city, including U.S. 26 over Mount Hood, can require traction tires or chains.

Took the trailer out for a long holiday weekend. Torrey and Nick were super nice and helpful. We called with a few questions and they were helpful and got us up and running. Highly recommend!

Great set up. We ended up not using some of the add ons as we got cleared out early due to smoke/fires and were reimbursed appropriately. Very professional communications. Nice for a small family of 4 for the weekend or more. 8 YO boy enjoyed it too: “dad do you think you could quit work and we could just drive around in this van for the rest of the year?”

Thanks Radek and Anna for the amazing experience!

How to book
The private parks near West Haven-Sylvan, including Jantzen Beach RV Park, Roamers Rest RV Park LLC, Columbia River RV Park, and Sun Outdoors Portland South, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and stays around the Rose Festival, July 4, and Labor Day book out earliest, so locking in dates two to three months ahead is a safe target.
For public-land camping in the broader region, Oregon State Parks accept new reservations from the same day as arrival through six months in advance, with new sites coming online at 6 a.m. Pacific time. Federal sites in Mount Hood National Forest and the Columbia River Gorge use Recreation.gov on a similar six-month rolling window.
What to expect
Private parks in the Portland metro lean toward paved or gravel pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups, including 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer. Wi-Fi, laundry, restrooms with showers, and dump stations are standard. Some parks offer pools, dog runs, and playgrounds, but sites are generally close together rather than spaced in forest.
Expect freeway noise at the larger I-5 and I-205 properties, and check tree clearance and slide-out room when booking, since several Portland-area parks were originally laid out for smaller rigs. Most parks accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, but longer Class A motorhomes should confirm site length in advance.
Quiet hours, leashed-pet rules, and stay-length caps are common. Tap water is potable, and trash and recycling service are provided on site.

Oregon's Class C non-commercial license covers virtually every Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhome, plus travel trailers and fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. There's no special endorsement, no commercial driver license (CDL), and no RV-specific test required. RVezy approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and you'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly into Portland International Airport (PDX) and you're ready to roll.

Booking an RV in West Haven-Sylvan is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after booking. Refund eligibility after that depends on how many days remain before your trip starts. If a host cancels, guests are refunded or provided travel credits. Because Oregon weather and Cascade road conditions can shift quickly, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after every trip to help you sort things out. Pro tip: book early to secure your dates and your favorite rig, knowing you have flexibility built into the platform.

Absolutely, and Portland is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country, so a pet-friendly RV rental in West Haven-Sylvan is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome four-legged passengers. Many local campgrounds, including Portland Fairview RV Park and Sandy Riverfront RV Resort in Troutdale, allow pets. Once you arrive, head a few miles east to Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the US, where the Wildwood Trail offers leashed-dog access. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size details so check-in is smooth.
portland.gov/parks/dogsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in West Haven-Sylvan is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip city driving on the Sunset Highway. Many local hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campsite at Portland Fairview RV Park, Sandy Riverfront RV Resort, or even a friend's driveway in the West Haven-Sylvan neighborhood. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are set by the host and typically scale with distance from their home base. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Ainsworth State Park in the Columbia River Gorge for a stress-free first night.

Jantzen Beach RV Park sits on the Columbia River just 15 minutes from downtown. For a state-park experience, Ainsworth State Park in the Gorge offers full-hookup sites under towering firs. Overnight parking on Portland city streets is restricted, so always book a campground or use the host's driveway. Pro tip: reserve through Oregon State Parks' system up to six months ahead for summer weekends.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=reserve.makeWhat's the best time of year for an RV trip from West Haven-Sylvan?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from West Haven-Sylvan is late June through mid-September, when Portland enjoys dry days, highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s, and cool nights in the mid-50s, perfect for sleeping in an RV. July and August are peak season for Mt. Hood and the Oregon Coast, while late May, June, and September offer fewer crowds and lower nightly rates. Spring brings the legendary Pacific Northwest greenery (and rain showers), and fall delivers stunning foliage in the Columbia River Gorge. Winter trips are doable too, with mild lowland temperatures, though mountain passes like Government Camp require traction tires or chains. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season rental for the best campground availability at Silver Falls State Park.
weather.gov/pqr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
First-time renting an RV is easier than you'd think, and West Haven-Sylvan is a great launching point because you can avoid downtown Portland traffic by heading straight onto US 26 west toward the coast or east toward Mt. Hood. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump process so you're never left guessing. Class B campervans and smaller Class C motorhomes drive much like a large van and are perfect for beginners. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: take your first 30 minutes on quieter routes like NW Cornell Road or Skyline Boulevard to get a feel for the rig before merging onto the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking from West Haven-Sylvan includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Historic Columbia River Highway or a dead battery at Lost Lake won't ruin your trip. One phone call dispatches help for towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also your first line of support for questions about RV systems (think furnace, awning, slide-outs) and most respond within minutes. If you need additional help, the RVezy customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save your host's number and the roadside assistance line to your phone before leaving the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an RV from West Haven-Sylvan into Washington or other states?
Yes, an RV road trip from West Haven-Sylvan can easily cross into Washington (the Columbia River is just a short drive north over the Interstate Bridge) and onward to Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, or the Olympic Peninsula. You can also head south into California for the Redwoods, or east through Idaho. Interstate travel within the US is covered by your RVezy protection plan. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. If you're hoping to drive into Canada, message the host directly through the listing page to confirm, since cross-border trips depend on the host and the specific insurance terms.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Oregon RV trip from West Haven-Sylvan?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to budget when you rent an RV in Oregon, since Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 mpg. Oregon gas prices tend to sit above the national average. Heads up: Oregon now allows self-service fueling statewide, so you can pump your own gas (or let the attendant do it, which is still common at many stations). A round trip from West Haven-Sylvan to Cannon Beach and back is about 160 miles, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: fill up in Beaverton or Hillsboro where prices are often a few cents lower than in central Portland.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near West Haven-Sylvan?
For summer weekends at the best campgrounds near West Haven-Sylvan, book up to six months out, the day reservations open. Oregon State Parks releases new inventory daily for arrival dates up to six months in advance. Popular spots like Ainsworth State Park in the Gorge and Milo McIver State Park near Estacada fill within hours for July and August weekends. Private parks like Portland Fairview RV Park and Sandy Riverfront RV Resort take direct bookings and also fill fast. stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=reserve.makeWhat are the driving conditions like around Portland and West Haven-Sylvan?
West Haven-Sylvan sits right off US 26 (Sunset Highway), so you can avoid downtown Portland's narrow streets and low bridges entirely by heading west toward the coast or east toward Mt. Hood. Avoid taking large Class A motorhomes through the Vista Ridge Tunnel area during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays) and steer clear of the tight streets in the Pearl District and Northwest 23rd. Winter driving over Mt. Hood's Government Camp summit on US 26 requires chains or traction tires in snowy conditions, with conditions posted at TripCheck.com. Rain is common October through May, so leave extra following distance. Pro tip: use an RV-specific GPS app to route around any height-restricted overpasses.

Private parks like Portland Fairview RV Park feature 20/30/50-amp hookups, full water and sewer, Wi-Fi, swimming pools, laundry, and dump stations. Oregon State Parks like Ainsworth and Milo McIver offer full or partial hookups, potable water fill stations, hot showers, and clean restrooms. Most campgrounds also have onsite dump stations for paid guests. Pro tip: many private RV parks in the Portland metro accept non-guests at their dump stations for a small fee, which is handy mid-trip.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=visit.faqWhat's included in an RV rental from West Haven-Sylvan?

Expect comfortable beds (many hosts include linens, some charge a small fee), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, and utensils, a bathroom with toilet and shower, a furnace and often air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7, while travel trailers and fifth wheels can sleep 6 to 10. Many rigs also have generators, solar panels, outdoor speakers, TVs, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Each listing spells out exactly what's included. Pro tip: message the host to ask about coffee makers, camp chairs, and outdoor mats so you don't pack duplicates.

Hosts in West Haven-Sylvan offer a wide range of add-ons to customize your motorhome rental, from bedding and kitchen kits to generators, BBQ grills, bike racks, kayaks, camping chairs, outdoor heaters, and pre-stocked pantry packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in the West Haven-Sylvan, Cedar Mill, or nearby Beaverton area, with most offering a 1 to 2 hour orientation walkthrough. Many hosts also offer delivery to Portland International Airport (PDX), to your campground, or to a friend's house. Mileage policies and add-on fees are listed transparently on each RVezy listing. Pro tip: book a generator add-on if you're planning to boondock at Mt. Hood National Forest dispersed sites where there are no hookups.
fs.usda.gov/mthoodHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in West Haven-Sylvan happens securely through the RVezy platform; you'll never hand cash or a check directly to the host. Your card is charged when the booking is confirmed, and you'll see a clear breakdown of nightly rate, RVezy service fee, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons before you commit. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held (not charged) before pickup, then released after the trip provided the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup, take date-stamped photos, and return the rig clean with the holding tanks dumped. Pro tip: keep all fuel and dump-station receipts in case you need to document anything later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from West Haven-Sylvan?
An RV road trip from West Haven-Sylvan unlocks some of the most iconic scenery in the country. Head about 80 miles west on US 26 to Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock for a classic Oregon Coast experience. Drive roughly 60 miles east on US 26 to Mt. Hood for alpine lakes, hiking, and year-round skiing at Timberline. The Columbia River Gorge sits just 30 to 40 miles east on I-84, packed with waterfalls including Multnomah Falls. Crater Lake National Park is a stunning 250-mile journey south. Wine lovers can reach the Willamette Valley vineyards in under an hour. Pro tip: a 5-day loop combining Mt. Hood, the Gorge, and the coast is the perfect introduction to RV camping in the Pacific Northwest.
