Campgrounds near Allison Park, Pennsylvania
Allison Park sits in the North Hills of Allegheny County, roughly fifteen miles north of downtown Pittsburgh. The area works well as a base for RV renters because it puts urban amenities, the Allegheny River corridor, and the wooded ridges of the Laurel Highlands within easy reach. Camping sites near Allison Park range in elevation from 800 to 1,200 feet above sea level, with most facilities located within the Appalachian Plateau region.
Options cluster in two bands. Close-in private parks such as Mountain Top Campground, Buttercup Woodlands Campground, Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Indian Brave Campgrounds, and Smith Grove Camp Grounds handle short hops from the city and typically offer full or partial hookups. Mountain Top Campground in Tarentum offers additional options for tent camping, RV sites, and cabin accommodations within a short drive of Allison Park.
Farther out, Pennsylvania State Parks add larger, wooded loops with lake access. Raccoon Creek State Park, located about 25 miles west of Allison Park, features wooded campsites with electric hookups and access to a lake with swimming and boating facilities.
Things to do near Allison Park
North Park, adjacent to Allison Park, offers a large lake, paved trails for biking and jogging, disc golf, and swimming. Day trips south into Pittsburgh cover the Carnegie museums, the Strip District, and Kennywood in West Mifflin. Kennywood is a classic amusement park offering both modern thrill rides and traditional attractions like wooden roller coasters.
Water and trail activity draws renters east and south. The Allegheny River and its rail trails support paddling and cycling, and the Laurel Highlands add whitewater and waterfalls. Ohiopyle State Park offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, and whitewater rafting, and is known for its waterfalls and natural waterslides.
Anglers use nearby lakes and creeks for bass, trout, and catfish, and most campgrounds sit within a short drive of stocked water.

Western Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Pittsburgh sees warm summers and cold winters, with moderate precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year, though summer is typically the wettest season. Most private and state-park campgrounds run a standard shoulder-to-shoulder season, with the bulk of facilities operating from April through October and a small number of year-round options.
Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and frequent rain, with cool nights lingering into May. Summer is peak season: warm days, thunderstorms in the afternoon, and full campground calendars. Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend camping during summer months when many local campgrounds reach capacity, particularly at state parks.
Fall is the sweet spot for many RV renters, with crisp air, low humidity, and hardwood color through October. Winter closes most private parks; a small number of year-round sites and state-park cabins remain available, and travelers should expect snow, ice, and freezing nights.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

How to book campgrounds near Allison Park
Pennsylvania state parks such as Raccoon Creek, Moraine, and Keystone use a centralized reservation system operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Sites can be booked up to eleven months in advance, and popular summer weekends often sell out within days of opening. A reservation confirms one specific site, not just a park, so filter for RV length, hookups, and pull-through access before selecting.
Private campgrounds in the ring around Allison Park, including Mountain Top Campground, Buttercup Woodlands Campground, Indian Brave Campgrounds, and Smith Grove Camp Grounds, generally take direct phone or online reservations through the operators. Seasonal-lease sites can occupy most of a park, so ask how many nightly transient sites remain before driving out.
For holiday weekends, book six to eight weeks ahead. For fall foliage in October, aim for late summer.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the area are generally RV-friendly. Campground access typically involves paved roads suitable for most vehicles, though some tent sites may require short walks from parking areas. Terrain in the North Hills is rolling, so expect some grades on the last few miles into wooded parks.
Amenities at established parks are consistent. Most established campgrounds provide basic amenities including fire rings, picnic tables, and access to restrooms with flush toilets and showers. Water and electric hookups vary by location and site type, and cell phone coverage is generally reliable throughout the region, though signal strength may vary in more remote areas.
Bugs peak in June and July, so pack repellent and screens. Black bears are present in wooded counties; store food inside the RV and keep grills clean. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with quarantine rules for invasive pests.
