Western Pennsylvania has four clear seasons, and each shifts what is open and how sites book. At Raccoon Creek State Park, the modern E and F loops operate from early April through mid-October, while loops A through D run late May through mid-September. The Sioux rustic campground stays open year-round. Private parks like the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey typically operate on a longer season, but shoulder-month stays should be confirmed with the operator. Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights, with blooms peaking in late April. Summer is peak family season, with warm lake temperatures and afternoon thunderstorm activity. It is warm enough to swim at the lake from late May through mid-September. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October, making it a strong window for RV renters who want cooler nights and color. Winter camping is limited to rustic and private sites and requires cold-weather preparation, though visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating.

Site type varies widely across the area. Raccoon Creek's modern campground has 172 sites divided into loops with electric and non-electric options, tent-only areas, and pet-friendly loops. Amenities include a playground, sanitary dump station, five central washhouses, and warm showers. Sites accommodate rigs up to about 50 feet depending on the loop, so match rig length before booking. Expect terrain typical of the Allegheny Plateau. Many sites are not perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful for RV setups. Cell coverage is generally solid near Carnegie and along the interstates but can weaken inside state park loops. Private parks near Carnegie tend to offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and pull-through sites suited to larger rentals, while state and rustic sites emphasize quiet, tree cover, and trail access.
