Campgrounds near Crafton, Pennsylvania
Crafton is a small borough just west of Pittsburgh, and RV travelers use it as a launch point for campgrounds spread through the wooded hills of southwestern Pennsylvania. The area combines a large state park with private RV parks along the I-79 and I-70 corridors, which makes it practical for both destination stays and overnight stopovers.
The closest full-service option for RVs is the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, set in wooded hills roughly 28 miles south of Pittsburgh and easily reached from I-79. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Mountain Top Campground, and Indian Brave Campgrounds add smaller private options in the surrounding counties, while Sioux - Raccoon Creek State Park anchors the public-land camping experience west of Pittsburgh.
Most sites are within roughly an hour's drive of Crafton, so travelers can base out of one campground and still reach downtown Pittsburgh, the Ohio River valley, and Washington County attractions in a single day.
Things to do near Crafton
Raccoon Creek State Park is the main outdoor draw west of the city. The park encompasses 7,572 acres and features the 101-acre Raccoon Lake, with swimming, fishing, boating, and miles of hiking trails. The Wildflower Reserve protects more than 700 plant species along 4.5 miles of trails, which makes it a good stop for families with curious kids.
Closer to Crafton, travelers can drive into Pittsburgh for the zoo, the science center, and the three rivers. From the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, side trips reach Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright house, the Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life, and The Meadows Racetrack and Casino about five miles from the campground. Rural back roads through Washington County wind past covered bridges, antique stores, and farm stands.

The main camping window at Raccoon Creek State Park runs from spring through mid-fall. Modern loops E and F open in early April and close in mid-October, while loops A, B, C, and D operate from late May through mid-September. Camping is possible year-round at the park's Sioux Rustic Campground, which gives cold-weather travelers a public-land option after the modern loops close.
Late spring and summer are peak season. Reservations are recommended, especially for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends when the park draws heavy crowds from the Pittsburgh area. Wildflower blooms peak in late April, and lake swimming is comfortable from late May through mid-September.
Fall brings cooler nights and strong foliage color through October, with mid-October typically the best window for leaf-peeping in western Pennsylvania. Winter camping is limited and often snowy, and pool amenities at private parks like the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey run only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

How to book a Crafton campsite
Sioux - Raccoon Creek State Park and other Pennsylvania state park sites are booked through the state's reservation system. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, with a booking release at noon Eastern Time. Reservations can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Holiday weekends and summer Fridays fill first, so book several months out for those dates. Aim to book at least three months in advance, especially for cabins.
Private parks like the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, Mountain Top Campground, and Indian Brave Campgrounds are booked directly through the operator, by phone or website. Confirm rig length and hookup type before you reserve, since some sites near Crafton are on narrow, hilly access roads.
What to expect at Crafton campgrounds
Terrain around Crafton is hilly and wooded, and access roads to some private parks are narrow with grades that matter for larger rigs. Confirm max length when booking: at the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, the maximum pull-through length is 88 feet, but not every site is that long, and the entrance road climbs a narrow, steep grade.
At Raccoon Creek, expect a mix of loops. The modern campground has 172 sites divided into six loops with electric and non-electric options, along with five central washhouses with flush toilets and warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and a playground. Pets are permitted in specific loops only. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download maps before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Crafton, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Crafton, PA?
Good news: RV rental in Crafton is one of the most affordable ways to explore western Pennsylvania. On RVezy, travel trailers near Pittsburgh typically run around $120 per night, while motorhomes average about $200 per night, with most hosts offering 10 to 20 percent off weekly or monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Crafton, filter by travel trailers, book midweek, and aim for shoulder months like late April or September when demand cools. Pro tip: many Crafton-area hosts will discount delivery if you are heading to nearby Raccoon Creek or Moraine State Park, so message before you book.
visitpittsburgh.com/blog/top-rv-parks-near-pittsburgh/What license do I need to rent an RV in Crafton, PA?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular Class C Pennsylvania driver's license (or your home-state equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Crafton for nearly every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. PennDOT only requires a Non-Commercial Class A or B license for rigs over 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is heavier than the typical Class B campervan or Class C motorhome. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll verify your ID through the platform in minutes. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll out toward the Laurel Highlands.
pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/driver-licensing.htmlIs my Crafton RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Crafton booked through RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle and gives you serious peace of mind. During checkout you'll choose from different RVezy renter protection tiers so you can match the level of coverage to your trip, not the host's preference. That means whether you are parked at Raccoon Creek State Park or driving the Pennsylvania Turnpike, you can focus on the trip and not the what-ifs. First time renting an RV in Crafton? This is the reassurance that makes saying yes easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Crafton RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the host, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Final terms depend on how far out you cancel and on circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters, which western Pennsylvania occasionally serves up in the form of winter storms or summer flooding along the Ohio River. The cancellation policy is handled by RVezy directly and is not displayed on individual listings. Pro tip: book early for fall foliage weekends in October, when Crafton-area RVs sell out fast, then relax knowing you have flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Crafton?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Crafton welcome your dog along for the ride. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who allow furry co-pilots, and message them about any size or breed notes before booking. Once you're on the road, head to Raccoon Creek State Park, where pets are permitted in the C and F campsite loops, or the Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, which has a dog park on-site. Closer to home, Crafton Park and the Panhandle Trail are both great for stretching paws. Don't forget vaccination records, as most western PA campgrounds will ask to see them at check-in.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/raccoon-creek-state-park/stayCan the RV be delivered to me in Crafton instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Crafton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through Pittsburgh's hilly neighborhoods. Many Crafton-area hosts will deliver, level, and set up your motorhome rental right at your campground, like Mountain Top Campground in Hickory or the Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage and may include a setup fee. Pro tip: ask for delivery to Raccoon Creek State Park's electric loops, just 30 minutes west, so you can skip the city driving entirely and start your trip relaxed.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/raccoon-creek-state-parkHow far can I drive on a Crafton RV trip, and are there mileage limits?
You'll have plenty of range for a great Crafton RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. From Crafton you can reach Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater in about 90 minutes (75 miles), Cook Forest State Park in roughly 2 hours (95 miles), Cleveland in 2.5 hours (135 miles), Niagara Falls in about 4 hours (215 miles), and Washington, D.C. in about 4.5 hours (250 miles). Pro tip: ask hosts about mileage when messaging, since unlimited-mileage rigs are gold for an RV road trip from Crafton to the Laurel Highlands and back.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Crafton, PA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Crafton. Raccoon Creek State Park (about 30 minutes west) has 172 modern tent and trailer sites with electric hookups, warm showers, and a 101-acre lake for swimming. Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey offers full hookups and a heated pool about 40 minutes east. Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey is a quick 25-minute drive south with pull-throughs for big rigs. For luxury, Pine Cove Beach Club and RV Resort near Charleroi delivers a resort feel just 35 miles away. Mountain Top Campground in Hickory is the closest option and only 25 minutes from PNC Park, perfect if you want to catch a Pirates game.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/raccoon-creek-state-park/stayWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Crafton?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Crafton is mid-May through mid-October, with two standout windows. Late spring (May to early June) brings 65 to 80 degree F days and the famous wildflower bloom at Raccoon Creek's Wildflower Reserve, with over 700 plant species. Summer (June to August) is warm (highs 80 to 87 F), perfect for lake swimming and Pirates games. The real insider pick is mid-October, when fall foliage peaks across the Allegheny hills and crowds thin out. Winter RV rentals are possible at heated, four-season rigs since Crafton sees average January highs of 38 F, so check listings for heated tanks if you want a cozy off-season adventure.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting an RV in Crafton?
You've got this, and you won't be alone. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the kitchen before you leave the driveway. Most first-time renters in Crafton choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer because they drive much like a large van or SUV. Avoid the narrow neighborhood streets of Mount Washington on your first day, and know that the Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill Tunnels have a 13 foot 6 inch clearance, which is fine for most RVs but worth confirming for your rig's height. Pro tip: book delivery to Raccoon Creek State Park so your first drive happens after you're settled. RVezy support is also available if you have questions along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my RV trip near Crafton?
Take a deep breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just a phone call away whether you're on I-376 through Crafton or deep in the Laurel Highlands. Roadside service typically handles flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV, like a tricky awning or generator. Pro tip: save the RVezy support contact info in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN sticker. With Pittsburgh service centers nearby, you're never far from help on a Crafton RV trip.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Crafton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, which makes Crafton an excellent launchpad given Pennsylvania borders six states. Popular RV road trips from Crafton include Cleveland and Lake Erie (about 2.5 hours), Niagara Falls (about 4 hours), Washington, D.C. (about 4.5 hours), and the Shenandoah Valley (about 5 hours). Crossing into Canada at Niagara may be allowed on some rentals, so message the host before booking to confirm cross-border travel and protection. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: build at least one day in Ohiopyle State Park into any eastbound route for jaw-dropping whitewater views.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on my Crafton RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable, so budget smart. Class C motorhomes around Pittsburgh average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG). Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run a bit higher than the national average due to state fuel taxes, so expect roughly $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon in the Crafton area. For a weekend trip to Raccoon Creek (60 miles round trip), that's often under $30 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up across the border in West Virginia or Ohio on longer trips, where gas is usually 20 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Crafton?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including Raccoon Creek, open reservations 11 months in advance through visitPAparks.com or 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), and Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and mid-October foliage weekends fill fastest. For summer weekends, aim to book at least 3 months ahead; for fall foliage, book by August. Private parks like the Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey accept reservations even further out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have openings and often come with lower nightly rates, perfect for a flexible family RV trip Crafton-style.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat's driving an RV like around Crafton and Pittsburgh?
Crafton sits just 5 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, so a little planning makes RV driving here easy. The biggest things to know: the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Squirrel Hill Tunnel have a 13-foot 6-inch clearance (fine for most RVs but check your rig's height), and I-376 through the Parkway West can get tight during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m., 4 to 6 p.m.). Steep streets like those in Mount Washington are best avoided. Use I-79 and I-279 for the smoothest RV routes out of town. Winter brings snow and salt, so check forecasts November through March. Pro tip: most Crafton hosts will deliver to bypass city driving entirely.
penndot.pa.gov/RegionalOffices/district-11/Pages/default.aspxWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Crafton?
Western Pennsylvania campgrounds are well-equipped for RVers. Raccoon Creek State Park offers 172 modern sites with electric hookups (20/30/50-amp options), flush toilets, warm showers, picnic tables, and fire rings, plus a dump station on-site. Private parks like the Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA and Pine Cove Beach Club provide full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Need to dump or fill water between trips? Many KOAs allow non-guest dump access for a small fee, and RVDumpsites.net lists free options. Pro tip: Pennsylvania state park sites are not full-hookup but most have water spigots throughout the loops, so bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and you're set.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Crafton?
You'll find more comforts than you'd expect. Most Crafton RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 (queen beds, convertible dinettes, bunks), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers usually include air conditioning, a furnace, a TV, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many include a generator, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi boosters, which are clutch in the rolling hills west of Pittsburgh where cell signal can dip. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for heated tanks if you're booking shoulder season or a winter campervan rental Crafton trip.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Crafton offer all kinds of helpful extras to make your trip smoother. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, generators, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Crafton or a nearby Pittsburgh suburb, and many will meet you at the airport (PIT is only 12 minutes away) for a delivery fee. Mileage policies vary by host (some offer unlimited mileage, others 100 to 150 free miles per day), so confirm before booking. Pro tip: one-way trips from Crafton to destinations like Cleveland or Niagara may be possible, just message the host directly to ask.
flypittsburgh.com/pittsburgh-international-airport/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Crafton?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Crafton on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. Your trip total covers the nightly rate, any add-ons, taxes, and the protection plan you select. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, the amount is listed clearly on each listing, and it's released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off so any pre-existing dings are documented, which is the easiest way to ensure a smooth deposit return.
