Campgrounds and RV parks near Masontown, PA

The Youghiogheny River is the centerpiece for outdoor recreation, offering Class III and IV whitewater that ranks among the busiest rafting runs east of the Mississippi. Guided trips are available through Ohiopyle-based outfitters, and experienced boaters can launch on their own from the park's Launch Area near the Visitor Center. Ohiopyle State Park contains about 79 miles of hiking trails, along with a 27-mile section of the Great Allegheny Passage that forms part of the multi-use route connecting Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. The trail is popular with cyclists and, in winter, cross-country skiers. Historic and architectural stops are within easy reach: Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob (both Frank Lloyd Wright properties), Fort Necessity National Battlefield, and Laurel Caverns. Families often add stops at the natural waterslides at Meadow Run and the Youghiogheny Reservoir for fishing and boat rentals.

Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park operates from April through mid-December, which aligns with the practical camping season for most travelers in the region. Whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny runs roughly April through October, with the highest water levels and busiest launches concentrated in late spring and early summer. Summer weekends and holidays draw the heaviest crowds; sites with full hookups at private parks and electric sites at Kentuck fill quickly for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Fall brings foliage traffic in late September and October, particularly along the Laurel Ridge, and RV travelers should expect busy trailheads on weekends. Winter closes most private campgrounds, though some parks in the surrounding area maintain limited year-round access. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail remains open for winter backpacking, and nearby Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain ski resorts draw off-season visitors. Mountain weather in this part of Pennsylvania can change quickly, so travelers should monitor forecasts before arrival.

Cell service is unreliable in and around Ohiopyle and along many Laurel Highlands roads, so downloading offline maps before arrival is worthwhile. Kentuck Campground has approximately 200 modern sites, with many offering 20, 30, or 50-amp electric hookups. A sanitary dump station and shower houses are on site, but most sites are not full-hookup. Sites at Kentuck sit fairly close together on an open hilltop, and 27 walk-in tent-only sites at the back of the campground offer more space and privacy. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and parking pad. Firewood and ice are available for purchase in the campground. Private parks near Masontown generally offer more RV-focused amenities, including full hookups, laundry, pools, and playgrounds. State park stays are limited to 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day and 21 nights the rest of the year. Grocery selection in small towns is limited, so stock up before arrival.
