McKees Rocks sits along the south bank of the Ohio River just across from Pittsburgh, in Allegheny County. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the Pittsburgh metro area while camping in the wooded hills and river valleys of southwestern Pennsylvania. Most nearby campgrounds are within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Options range from close-in RV parks to full-service destination campgrounds. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Hotel RV Beaver offer straightforward hookups close to town. Mountain Top Campground and Indian Brave Campgrounds sit farther out in the surrounding countryside with a more traditional camping feel. The Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey is a common stopover set high up among wooded hills 28 miles south of Pittsburgh, with long pull-thru sites geared to travelers.
Raccoon Creek State Park, about 30 minutes west, adds a large public-land option with 172 modern tent and trailer campsites with access to flush facilities, warm showers, and the option of electricity, plus access to Raccoon Lake.
Things to do near McKees Rocks
The main draw is easy access to Pittsburgh: the city's museums, sports venues, and Point State Park are a short drive across the Ohio River. Families often pair a day downtown with an evening back at camp.
Outside the city, Raccoon Creek State Park is one of Pennsylvania's largest state parks at 7,572 acres, centered around the scenic 101-acre Raccoon Lake, with swimming and fishing plus a Wildflower Reserve that protects 700+ plant species across 4.5 miles of trails. Farther afield, southwestern Pennsylvania's rural roads snake over 23 covered bridges and lead to antique stores and flea markets. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and the Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life are popular day trips from campgrounds south of the city, including the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey.

Southwestern Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Peak RV camping runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, when private parks operate all amenities and pools are open. At Raccoon Creek State Park, the E and F loops open in early April and close in mid-October, while A, B, C, and D loops open late May and close mid-September, and the Sioux Rustic Campground is open year round.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to travel for RVers. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October, and Pittsburgh averages 41.3 inches of precipitation a year, with June the wettest month and February the driest. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter brings cold temperatures, snow, and reduced services. Some private campgrounds close entirely, and even year-round parks may limit water hookups when freezes are likely. Anyone camping in winter should plan for snow, ice, and potential road closures.

How to book a campsite near McKees Rocks
Pennsylvania State Parks, including Raccoon Creek, use a single reservation system run through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, and the system opens new reservations at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Time. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, so booking several months out is recommended, and even earlier for cabins.
Private campgrounds such as the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, Mountain Top Campground, Indian Brave Campgrounds, Wallace Trailer Sales and Court, and Hotel RV Beaver are booked directly with each property, by phone or on their own websites. Cancellation windows and deposit rules vary by campground.
What to expect on-site
Private RV parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and seasonal pools. At the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, for example, the pool runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and the maximum pull-thru length is 88 feet. Smaller parks like Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Hotel RV Beaver focus on straightforward hookups rather than extensive amenities.
At Raccoon Creek State Park, the campground features five central washhouses with flush toilets and warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and a playground, and pets are permitted in C and F campsite loops. Cell coverage can be uneven in and around rural Pennsylvania state parks, so downloading maps in advance is wise.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a short money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If plans shift, open your RVezy dashboard or contact support to review your options. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy helps you find a replacement RV or provides a refund or travel credit. The clear, platform-wide policy means you will never be stuck guessing what a particular host might decide.

Absolutely, McKees Rocks is a great basecamp for dog lovers. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental McKees Rocks options, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you arrive, your pup will love romping at Frick Park's off-leash area in Pittsburgh (about 20 minutes east), the riverfront trails at Point State Park, or a longer outing to Raccoon Creek State Park, where leashed dogs are welcome on miles of wooded trails. Many pet-friendly hosts charge a small cleaning fee per pet, listed transparently in the listing. Message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and any quirks so check-in is smooth.

The host handles leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you can start your trip relaxed instead of stressed. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, often around $2 to $4 per mile each way, and many hosts offer free local delivery within a set radius of McKees Rocks.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/OhiopyleStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near McKees Rocks for my RV trip?
You have excellent options within an easy drive. Top picks for RV camping McKees Rocks travelers love include Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Holiday (about 25 miles south, full hookups and a pool), Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey in Ruffs Dale (about 40 miles east), Bear Run Campground near Portersville (about 45 minutes north), and Raccoon Creek State Park (about 25 miles west) for a more rustic, wooded experience with electric sites. For something scenic and a bit farther, Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground sits in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. State park sites at Raccoon Creek and Ohiopyle book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve early through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from McKees Rocks?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for a McKees Rocks RV trip. May through early October brings comfortable temperatures (highs in the 65 to 85°F range) and the lush green scenery the Pittsburgh region is famous for. June and July are peak season with daytime highs around 82°F and warm river evenings, perfect for festivals on the North Shore. September and October are an insider favorite: crisp days, fewer crowds, and brilliant fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands and along the Allegheny River. Winters are cold (often 20 to 35°F with snow), so most leisure RV trips run April through November. Pro tip: book by February for July 4th weekend, as Pittsburgh's riverfront fireworks pack every nearby campground.
weather.gov/pbz/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I be okay driving around Pittsburgh?
You'll do great, and you're not alone. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, generator, and tank dumping before you leave the driveway, so first time renting an RV in McKees Rocks feels manageable from minute one. For nervous drivers, the smart move is to choose delivery so the host handles the trickiest part: navigating the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Liberty Tunnel, and Pittsburgh's narrow bridges. Once you're at your campsite, driving is the easy part. You can also message the host before booking with any specific questions, from backing up to operating the awning. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer for the most forgiving learning curve.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/travel-in-pa.htmlWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy rental in McKees Rocks includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so whether you have a flat on I-376, a dead battery at Moraine State Park, or a slide-out that won't retract at the KOA in Ruffs Dale, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource. Most are local to the Pittsburgh area and can troubleshoot small issues by phone, like resetting a GFCI outlet or relighting the water heater. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone the moment you pick up the keys.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/travel-in-pa.htmlCan I take my McKees Rocks RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed and very popular from McKees Rocks given how close you are to multiple state borders. West Virginia is about 30 minutes south, Ohio is about 45 minutes west, and you can reach Maryland, New York, and Virginia within a day's drive. Cross-border travel into Canada (think Niagara Falls, Ontario, just under 4 hours away) is allowed by some hosts depending on their preferences and protection coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Bring your passport for Canada and pre-check border wait times at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from McKees Rocks?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, and the math is friendlier than most people expect. Gas in the Pittsburgh metro typically runs around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans 16 to 22 mpg, and if you're towing a travel trailer with your own truck, expect 10 to 14 mpg. For a 300 mile weekend loop from McKees Rocks to Ohiopyle and back, budget roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in Robinson Township (10 minutes from McKees Rocks) before you leave, it's consistently among the cheapest gas in Allegheny County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near McKees Rocks?
For the best campgrounds near McKees Rocks, earlier is better, but you have options. Pennsylvania State Park campgrounds like Raccoon Creek, Moraine, and Ohiopyle accept reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends sell out months ahead. KOA and private parks like Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey usually have more midweek availability and you can often book 2 to 4 weeks out. For July 4th, Labor Day, or Pittsburgh Steelers home game weekends, lock in your site 3 to 6 months ahead. If state parks are full, check Allegheny National Forest (about 2 hours northeast) where many first-come-first-served sites remain open into peak season.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions I should know about in the Pittsburgh area?
Driving an RV around McKees Rocks is very doable once you know the quirks. The big one: Pittsburgh's tunnels. The Fort Pitt Tunnel and Liberty Tunnel on I-376 are open to standard RVs and propane-equipped motorhomes, but PennDOT occasionally runs overnight lane restrictions, so check 511PA.com before you head out. Hills are real here, so use a lower gear on grades around Mount Washington and the West End Circle. Bridges and older residential streets in McKees Rocks itself are narrow, so delivery is a great choice if you'd rather skip city navigation. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown during rush hour (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM) and steer clear of the low-clearance Liberty Bridge approach if you're in anything over 11 feet tall.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near McKees Rocks typically offer?
You will find a great mix. Private parks like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and dump stations. Pennsylvania state parks such as Raccoon Creek and Moraine offer electric hookup sites, modern restrooms with showers, potable water fill stations, and centralized dump stations, though sewer hookups at the site are rare. For dumping en route, many large travel centers along I-79 south of Pittsburgh offer dump stations. Fill your fresh water tank before leaving the McKees Rocks area, as some state park spigots are seasonal and shut off in cooler months.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in McKees Rocks?
Most RV rentals in McKees Rocks come fully equipped and trip-ready. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people, a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many motorhomes and campervan rental McKees Rocks listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is sometimes included but more often you'll tether to your phone, which works well across most of the Pittsburgh region. Pro tip: check the listing's Amenities section and Add-ons before booking, items like linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and bikes are often available for a small fee.
visitpittsburgh.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a McKees Rocks motorhome rental?
Hosts in the McKees Rocks area offer a wide range of add-ons to customize your motorhome rental McKees Rocks experience. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $60), kitchen kits, generator usage (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond a daily allowance), portable grills, camping chairs, bike racks, and even kayaks. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near McKees Rocks, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Most hosts have a 100 to 150 mile per day allowance with extra miles around $0.35 each, though some offer unlimited mileage packages, perfect for a longer family RV trip McKees Rocks adventure. Pro tip: bundle your add-ons at booking rather than adding later, hosts sometimes offer discounted package pricing upfront.
visitpittsburgh.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in McKees Rocks?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, no cash, no checks, no awkward parking-lot transactions. You pay the rental cost securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit (amount set by the host and shown before you book) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the same fuel and propane level, and without new damage, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid issues, do a quick video walkthrough with your host at both pickup and drop-off in McKees Rocks. Keep receipts for any fuel or propane top-offs so reconciliation is fast and friendly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first RV road trip from McKees Rocks?
For a perfect long weekend, point your rental southeast to the Laurel Highlands. An RV road trip from McKees Rocks to Ohiopyle State Park (about 75 miles, around 90 minutes) gives you whitewater on the Youghiogheny River, the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail, and a short drive to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Add a night at Linn Run or Laurel Hill State Park and you have a classic Pennsylvania loop in 3 to 4 days. Want more variety? Continue north to Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie (about 130 miles) for sandy beaches, or west to Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio (about 135 miles). Pick up pierogies and a Primanti Brothers sandwich in Pittsburgh before you roll out for a true regional sendoff.
