Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Oliver, PA

From a base camp near Mount Oliver, families typically split time between city attractions and outdoor stops. In town, the Carnegie Museums, Phipps Conservatory, the Pittsburgh Zoo, the Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines, and the North Shore stadium district are the standard stops. The Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail begins downtown and runs south toward Cumberland, Maryland, making it a popular half-day cycling outing. Outside the city, day trips reach Ohiopyle State Park, roughly 20,500 acres in the Laurel Highlands within a quick drive from Pittsburgh, for whitewater on the Youghiogheny River, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, Moraine State Park for boating on Lake Arthur, and Raccoon Creek State Park west of the city. Kennywood, a historic amusement park in West Mifflin, sits close to the KOA properties on the southeast side.

Southwestern Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons. Pittsburgh experiences a humid continental climate, marked by strong seasonal changes. Summers are warm, while winters are cold. The area receives moderate precipitation, which is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though summer is typically the wettest season. Most private campgrounds around the metro run a standard April through late October season, with a handful open year-round for self-contained rigs. Summer is peak travel time, driven by school breaks, Pirates home games, and festival weekends on the North Shore. Sites at the KOA properties book up furthest ahead for Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Kennywood weekends. Heavy downpours are common with thunderstorms during the warm months. Fall brings cooler nights and reliable foliage color through October in the Laurel Highlands east of the city. Winter camping is limited: from November to April, Pittsburgh can remain below freezing all day long, and the city typically has 32 days a year when the temperature never rises above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, so most seasonal parks close and water hookups are shut off.

Terrain around Mount Oliver is hilly, with narrow older streets in the city neighborhoods and steep grades on some approach roads. Larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs are better off staying at suburban campgrounds and driving passenger vehicles into town rather than navigating downtown or the South Side slopes. Most KOA and private parks in the area offer full hookups, laundry, and pools, with pull-through sites suitable for longer rigs. Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA offers 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, and allows vehicles up to 65 feet. Rustic parks farther out may have only water and electric, with dump stations on site. Cell coverage is strong throughout the metro area on all major carriers. Biting insects are moderate in summer, deer ticks are present in wooded parks, and black bears are occasionally reported in the Laurel Highlands, so standard food storage practices apply on eastern day trips.
