Campgrounds near West Alexander
West Alexander sits in the southwestern corner of Washington County, Pennsylvania, right against the West Virginia state line and a short drive from Wheeling. The village straddles Interstate 70, which makes it an easy overnight stop for RVers crossing between Pittsburgh and Columbus while also serving as a base for exploring the northern panhandle of West Virginia and the Ohio River Valley.
Campground density in the immediate area is low, but options cover several styles. Hotel RV West Alexander and Ernies Acres Campground sit closest to town, with Ernies Acres offering full hookups on a wooded property a few miles off I-70. Big Gs RV Campground lies west of West Alexander in the tri-state region, and Grand Vue Park is roughly a half-hour south near Moundsville, West Virginia.
For a state-park experience with a public reservation system, Ryerson Station State Park is the closest option, located in Greene County near Wind Ridge. The park covers about 1,164 acres and its 35-site tent and trailer campground is open year round.
Things to do near West Alexander
Outdoor activity centers on Ryerson Station State Park, where hiking trails leave from the campground area. The park also offers a swimming pool, fishing on the North Fork of Dunkard Fork of Wheeling Creek, picnicking, and winter recreation. Hunting is permitted on roughly 1,000 acres under Pennsylvania Game Commission rules.
Grand Vue Park adds a family-oriented adventure layer with ziplines, disc golf, mini golf, a large heated pool, and long-range overlooks of the Ohio Valley. An on-site restaurant and a park shuttle round out the offerings for campers staying multiple nights.
Closer to West Alexander, the surrounding countryside includes historic covered bridges and easy day trips into Wheeling for riverfront attractions, the Grave Creek Mound at Moundsville, and dining along the Ohio River.

The region has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are cold, cloudy, and snowy. July is typically the wettest month in the Wheeling area, and annual precipitation runs around forty-one inches.
Most private campgrounds near West Alexander operate year round on a reduced footprint in the cold months. Grand Vue Park scales back between December 1 and April 1, keeping only one bathhouse open and a limited number of sites available to rent. Ernies Acres Campground stays open year round with full hookups, which is useful for shoulder-season and winter travelers who need 30 or 50-amp service.
Ryerson Station State Park Campground is also open year round, with modern restrooms and showers available in all seasons and a smaller family-assist restroom open from November through April. Park interpretive programs run from May through September, so late-spring through early-fall stays offer the fullest experience for families.
How to book campgrounds near West Alexander
Ryerson Station State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Bookings can be made online through the state's ReserveAmerica portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Modern tent, electric, and full-hookup sites can be reserved for arrivals as soon as the same day and up to eleven months in advance. Camping cottages and deluxe cottages require booking at least three days ahead of arrival. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out at 10 a.m.
Grand Vue Park takes reservations directly through its own booking site and by phone. Private options in the area, including Hotel RV West Alexander, Ernies Acres Campground, and Big Gs RV Campground, are typically booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites.
What to expect at West Alexander campgrounds
At Ryerson Station, the state advises that Class A motorhomes and wider vehicles use extra caution on the narrow McNay Ridge Road, and campers are encouraged to travel PA Route 21 to McNay Ridge Road as the easiest route to the campground. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so downloading maps and confirmations in advance is a good idea.
Grand Vue Park's RV campground has forty full-hookup, back-in sites on gravel pads with 30 and 50-amp service, and most sites accommodate rigs up to fifty feet. The property is gated with security, and a shuttle circulates through the park.
Ernies Acres is a wooded, minimalist RV park on 127 acres roughly three miles off Interstate 70, with 30 and 50-amp full hookups at all sites. Expect quiet, spread-out sites rather than a resort atmosphere.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near West Alexander, PA
How much does an RV rental in West Alexander, PA cost?
RV rental in West Alexander typically ranges from about $90 to $250 per night, with travel trailers on the lower end and Class A motorhomes on the higher end. Because West Alexander sits right at the Pennsylvania/West Virginia line off Interstate 70 (I-70), you'll often find better value here than booking out of Pittsburgh, just 40 minutes east. To save more, book midweek, target shoulder seasons like late April or September, and use the price filter on RVezy to set your nightly budget. Pro tip: hosts in nearby Washington, Claysville, and Wheeling often offer multi-night discounts for stays of 5+ days, which is perfect for exploring the rolling hills of Greene and Washington counties.
visitwashingtoncountypa.com/places-to-stay/campgrounds-and-rv-parks/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in West Alexander, PA?
Good news: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need for nearly every RV on RVezy in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania State Police only require a non-commercial Class B license if a single vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, and a Class A for heavy combination rigs, which covers only the largest motorhomes, not the campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers most renters choose. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right in the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you road-ready.
pa.gov/agencies/psp/resources/safety-resources/license-classes-non-commercialWhat protection and roadside help is included with my West Alexander RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-70 with peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the plan limits. If a tire blows on Route 40 outside Claysville or you need a tow near the West Virginia line, one call to RVezy roadside dispatches help, day or night. That built-in safety net is one reason first-time renters feel confident booking a motorhome rental in West Alexander.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a platform-wide cancellation policy (not the host), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, and the policy includes provisions for situations like host cancellations. Because the policy is standardized, you will not see different cancellation rules on each listing. Pro tip: book early to secure the best West Alexander RV rental inventory for summer weekends, knowing you have a window to adjust if plans change.

Cross Creek County Park has open fields perfect for a stretch break. dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/PlanYourVisit/Pages/PetsInParks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in West Alexander?
Yes, RV delivery in West Alexander is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a big rig down I-70. Many local hosts will deliver to nearby campgrounds like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Holiday in Washington or Pine Cove Beach Club and RV Resort, then level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy, enter your destination address, and the listing will show the delivery fee upfront. It is the easiest way to do a stress-free West Alexander RV trip, just show up and start the campfire.

weather.gov/pbz/I have never rented an RV before. What should I expect?
First time renting an RV? You will feel like a pro by the end of your walkthrough. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the propane stove, tank dumping, leveling, generator, and awning, and you will have their phone number for the whole trip. From West Alexander, start with something forgiving like a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer; the rolling I-70 corridor and Route 40 are excellent for getting your bearings. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery and setup at a nearby campground so your first night is purely about s'mores, not setup.

Every RV rental in West Alexander includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical hiccup is just one phone call away. Your host is also typically reachable by message or phone for quick questions like how to switch the fridge to propane, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of your rig's VIN and license plate to speed up dispatch if you need help along I-70 or rural Route 40.

nps.gov/cuva/index.htmHow should I budget for fuel on a West Alexander RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable, but it is easy to plan for. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with diesel often higher still, so check current rates before you go. Expect roughly 8-10 MPG from a Class A, 10-14 MPG from a Class C, 15-20 MPG from a campervan, and 12-16 MPG from a truck towing a travel trailer. A 200-mile loop from West Alexander to Ohiopyle and back in a Class C will typically run around $60-$90 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up just over the West Virginia line off I-70 where prices are often a few cents cheaper, and use a fuel-price app to spot the best stations in Washington, PA before you head out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near West Alexander?
For Pennsylvania State Parks like Ryerson Station and Raccoon Creek, you can reserve up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, which is exactly what locals do for July 4th, Labor Day, and peak October foliage weekends. Private parks like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Holiday usually book 2-4 weeks ahead for summer weekends but often have midweek openings. Insider tip: if a state park is full, check the reservation site's cancellation list a week out, last-minute openings pop up daily. And if you are stuck, ask your RVezy host, many know small RV parks along Route 40 that do not show up on the big booking sites.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around West Alexander?
Driving an RV around West Alexander is very manageable. Interstate 70 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, making it ideal for first-time RVers heading east to Washington or west into Wheeling. Expect rolling hills, some winding sections on Route 40 (the historic National Road), and a few steeper grades if you venture south toward Greene County or into West Virginia's panhandle. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to April through October. Pro tip: avoid downtown Pittsburgh tunnels (Fort Pitt and Squirrel Hill) in a tall Class A during rush hour; loop via I-79 and the Parkway West for a smoother ride.

Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100-150 free miles per night), and pricing is shown upfront on the listing. Pro tip: book delivery to a nearby campground like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA so you can skip the drive and start your West Alexander RV getaway by the campfire.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Alexander%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so your booking is protected from the moment you confirm. A refundable security deposit (amount set by the host and shown on the listing, commonly several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Walk through the rig with your host at pickup and drop-off, take photos inside and out, and note any pre-existing scuffs. Pro tip: clean up, return with the same fuel and propane level, and dump the tanks before drop-off, your deposit comes back faster every time.
