RV camping near Buffalo, South Carolina
Buffalo is a small community in Union County, in the Piedmont region of upstate South Carolina. It sits between Spartanburg to the north and Newberry to the south, putting RV travelers within easy reach of state park campgrounds, Sumter National Forest lands, and private RV parks along the I-26 corridor.
The closest full-service option is Croft State Park, set within the former Camp Croft Army training facility roughly five miles from downtown Spartanburg, with a 50-site family campground divided into an Inland section on 30-amp service and a Lakeside section offering 20/30/50-amp service near Lake Craig. Additional nearby options include Pine Ridge Campground, the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey off the interstate, Spacious Skies Peach Haven in the Gaffney area, and Turtle Creek Campground.
The surrounding landscape is rolling, wooded Piedmont terrain with lakes, rivers, and mixed hardwood forest. Travelers use Buffalo as a base for trail riding, paddling, fishing, and short drives to Spartanburg, Columbia, and the Blue Ridge foothills.
Things to do near Buffalo
Outdoor activity in the area centers on the lakes and trail network at Croft State Park. The 165-acre Lake Craig offers fishing for bass, bream, and catfish, plus kayak, canoe, and jon boat rentals, and multi-use trails wind through the park for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. A primitive group camping area, horse stalls for equestrian campers, and a show arena support riders traveling with stock, with monthly horse shows drawing spectators.
South of Buffalo, the Enoree Ranger District of Sumter National Forest opens up dispersed recreation, hunting, and paddling on the Enoree and Tyger rivers. Day trips reach downtown Spartanburg for restaurants and museums, Newberry for its historic opera house, and the shopping and minor-league baseball scene in Columbia.

The Piedmont has four distinct seasons, and most campgrounds in the Buffalo area operate year-round. Spring, from March through May, brings dogwood and redbud bloom, comfortable daytime temperatures, and rising demand for weekend sites at Croft State Park. Reserve early for spring holiday weekends and for equestrian event dates on the park's arena calendar.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year, though heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms occur more often in the warmer months. Lakeside sites and shaded loops fill quickly on summer weekends.
Fall delivers some of the most stable weather: cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color from late October into mid-November. Winters are cool and damp with occasional freezes. The area receives little snowfall, so RV travel through the region generally continues year-round with only brief cold snaps.
How to book a site near Buffalo
Croft State Park uses the South Carolina State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance, with a two-night minimum stay. Requests made less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. The central reservation line is 1-866-345-PARK, and bookings can also be made online at the South Carolina State Parks reservation site.
Sumter National Forest developed campgrounds on the Enoree Ranger District are bookable through Recreation.gov. Private options, including the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey, Spacious Skies Peach Haven, Pine Ridge Campground, and Turtle Creek Campground, take reservations through their own websites or brand apps. Book spring and fall weekends well ahead.
What to expect on site
Sites at Croft State Park are practical rather than resort-style. Each site has a packed gravel pad, water and electric hookups, a fire ring with grill, and a picnic table, and the campground provides restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, and a park store. Twenty-five of the sites offer 50-amp service, and some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Buffalo, Union, and Spartanburg corridor, and grocery and fuel stops are easy to reach off SC-215 and I-26. Expect mosquitoes and ticks in warm months, and follow state parks guidance to buy firewood locally rather than transporting it, to limit the spread of forest pests.
