Camping near Calhoun Falls, South Carolina
Calhoun Falls sits in Abbeville County on the shore of Richard B. Russell Lake, a 26,650-acre reservoir on the Savannah River that forms the border between South Carolina and Georgia. Because the lake was constructed after 1974, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prohibits exclusive private use of the shoreline, leaving it almost completely undeveloped except for state parks and day-use areas. That gives RV travelers unusually quiet, forested lakefront camping compared with the more built-up shores of nearby Hartwell and Thurmond.
The closest and best-known base for RVs is Calhoun Falls State Park, which sits along pine-covered points extending out into sparsely developed Lake Russell and offers spacious RV and tent sites with forested, shoreline views. A short drive south, the Savannah River continues into J. Strom Thurmond Lake, also known as Clarks Hill, where additional county-operated and private campgrounds sit near the Georgia line.
Options in the immediate area range from state park loops with water and electric to riverfront county and private parks, giving travelers flexibility on hookups and amenities.
Things to do around Calhoun Falls
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Russell is stocked for bass, crappie, bream and catfish, and multiple public boat ramps make it easy to launch a boat or personal watercraft. Calhoun Falls State Park offers a day-use boat ramp, a fishing pier, a seasonal swimming beach, a tennis court, and the easy Cedar Bluff Nature Trail, a 1.75-mile loop.
On the Georgia side of Lake Russell, Richard B. Russell State Park adds the 18-hole Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course, a 27-hole disc golf course, roughly 6 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a wheelchair-accessible swimming beach.
Downstream on Clarks Hill Lake, Bobby Brown Park sits near the confluence of the Broad and Savannah rivers and offers archery, disc golf, hiking trails, a boat ramp, and a swinging bridge that draws kids.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel in this part of the South Carolina piedmont. Daytime temperatures stay mild, humidity is manageable, and the lakes remain full for boating and fishing. March is one of the wetter months regionally, so expect occasional thunderstorms and muddy shoreline sites.
Summer is peak family season. Water temperatures on Lake Russell are warm enough for swimming from late May through September, and the swimming area at Calhoun Falls State Park opens for the season. Weekends and holidays fill early, especially waterfront loops, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Book well in advance for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Winter is quiet and cool rather than harsh. Freezes occur, but daytime highs often reach the mid-50s, making shoulder-season stays comfortable for RVs with basic winterization. Richard B. Russell State Park stays open year-round, with reservations available up to 14 months in advance through ReserveAmerica. Some private campgrounds reduce hours or amenities from December through February.
How to book a site
South Carolina State Parks handles Calhoun Falls State Park reservations through its central system. Camping reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights, and any reservation requested less than one day in advance of check-in must be made directly through the park at (864) 447-8267. Advance bookings can be made online or by phone at (866) 345-7275.
Georgia State Parks, including Richard B. Russell, use ReserveAmerica and open the booking window up to 14 months out. Bobby Brown Park is operated by Elbert County and takes reservations up to 11 months in advance, with bookings available through Campspot or by phone. Hester's Bottoms Campground, a private park on Lake Thurmond leased from the Corps of Engineers, takes bookings directly through its website.
Waterfront sites, pull-throughs, and 50-amp sites go first. For summer weekends, plan to book two to three months ahead.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the area skew toward paved or gravel pads with water and electric hookups rather than full hookups. At Calhoun Falls State Park, three campgrounds sit along the shores of Lake Russell, two provide individual water and electric hookups, and site lengths accommodate RVs up to 40 feet on some sites and up to 30 feet on others. Wi-Fi is available at the park office and day-use beach area but not in the campgrounds.
Richard B. Russell State Park sites include 30-amp electric and water, a dump station, coin laundry, and hot-shower bathhouses, with pads accommodating rigs up to 35 feet. Bobby Brown Park offers 30- and 50-amp service and five yurts in addition to standard sites.
Firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be sourced within the state and from less than 50 miles away, so plan to buy locally rather than hauling wood from home.
