Campgrounds near Hilltop, South Carolina
Hilltop is a small unincorporated community in Spartanburg County in South Carolina's Upstate region, a short drive from downtown Spartanburg and roughly an hour from Greenville and Charlotte via Interstate 85. The surrounding landscape is rolling Piedmont forest cut by creeks and small lakes, which gives RV travelers a mix of public state-park camping and private RV parks within a 30-minute radius.
The closest developed public option is Croft State Park, which covers more than 7,000 acres of wooded terrain just outside Spartanburg and offers an Inland Campground, a Lakeside Campground and a primitive group camping area. Private options in the area include Cunningham RV Park, Pine Ridge Campground, Beckon Ridge RV Park and Whispering Winds RV Park, which together cover most rig sizes and hookup needs.
Most visitors base out of Hilltop for a Piedmont trip built around trails, lake fishing, equestrian activities and easy access to Spartanburg's restaurants, breweries and BMW-related attractions.
Things to do near Hilltop
Croft State Park offers more than 17 miles of biking and hiking trails, a playground, picnicking and camping, as well as fishing and boating in two lakes, including 165-acre Lake Craig. Boat rentals are available including non-motorized fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks. Only electric motors are allowed on Lake Craig, which keeps the water calm for kids and paddlers.
Equestrian travelers have a dedicated draw here: the park regularly hosts shows in its arena and includes more than 20 miles of equestrian facilities and 51 stalls. Off-park, families can drive into Spartanburg for museums, the Rail Trail and downtown dining, or head west to Greenville's Falls Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Cowpens National Battlefield sits a short drive north for a Revolutionary War history stop.

The Spartanburg area has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool to semi-mild winters with strong seasonal temperature contrasts, so camping windows are long but comfort varies sharply by season. Spring and fall are the sweet spots: mild days, cooler nights and generally lower humidity make them ideal for hiking Croft's trail network and lake days.
Summer brings heat and humidity along with heavy seasonal downpours and afternoon thunderstorms. Sites still fill on weekends and holidays, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, so booking early matters. Winter is the quietest season with cold nights and occasional freezes; the Upstate typically sees total annual snowfall of roughly 2 to 5 inches, with occasional totals reaching 8 inches, usually in brief events. Croft stays open year-round, so shoulder-season and winter trips are viable for campers who tolerate cool nights and can pack for the occasional cold snap.

This was an incredible camping experience! It was the ideal way to camp, as we had always used tents before. It was fantastic that the RV was delivered and ready to use! There was ample space for my family to enjoy the room without feeling cramped. A big storm rolled in, and it was a great place to come together and use the appliances inside to cook dinner and watch a movie as a family. I highly recommend this rental for anyone seeking a great camping stay, and for anyone who has always wanted to try out the RV experience!

How to book campgrounds near Hilltop
Reservations for Croft State Park are handled through the South Carolina State Parks reservation system at 1-866-345-PARK or the online portal, with a minimum two-night stay required. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and the maximum length of stay is 14 nights, after which campers must vacate the park for 7 days.
Cancellations made 15 or more days from the reservation date incur no charges, cancellations made 4 to 14 days out forfeit a per-unit administration charge, and cancellations made 3 days or less forfeit all funds. Private parks near Hilltop, including Cunningham RV Park, Pine Ridge Campground, Beckon Ridge RV Park and Whispering Winds RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites and set their own deposit and cancellation rules, so confirm rig-length limits and hookup type before booking.
What to expect at campgrounds near Hilltop
At Croft State Park, sites have packed gravel pads with water and electrical hookups, and many can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Twenty-five sites in the Lakeside Campground offer 20/30/50-amp service, while the Inland Campground runs on 30-amp service. Restrooms with hot showers are located near both campground areas. Cell coverage is generally usable, but tree cover can weaken signals in parts of the park.
Pets are welcome in the state park: all pets must be on a leash no greater than 6 feet or crated at all times, and cannot be left unattended in a vehicle or on the campsite. Firewood rules matter here: all firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away, so plan to buy locally. Private parks near Hilltop lean toward full-hookup pull-throughs and are typically better suited to larger rigs and longer stays.
