Campgrounds and RV parks near Johnston, SC

Johnston sits in Edgefield County in west-central South Carolina, roughly 25 miles north of Aiken and within an hour of Lake Thurmond and the Savannah River. The surrounding region combines rural farmland, pine forests, and reservoir shoreline, which gives RV travelers a mix of private parks and state-run campgrounds inside a short drive of town. Closest to Johnston, Aiken RV Park and Campertown RV Park serve RVers looking for full-hookup sites near local services. For a more natural setting, Aiken State Park lies to the southeast along the South Fork Edisto River, while Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area and Lake Greenwood State Park offer lakeside camping on Strom Thurmond Reservoir and Lake Greenwood respectively. The area works well as a base for reservoir fishing, river paddling, and day trips to Aiken, Augusta, and the Sumter National Forest. Sites range from paved pull-throughs at private parks to shaded back-in sites at the state parks, so options exist for large motorhomes as well as smaller travel trailers.

South Carolina State Parks, including Aiken State Park, Lake Greenwood State Park, and Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area, use the SouthCarolinaParks.com reservation system. Sites can be booked up to 13 months in advance, and popular waterfront sites on Lake Thurmond and Lake Greenwood are often reserved months ahead for spring and fall weekends. Private parks such as Aiken RV Park and Campertown RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekly and monthly stays are common at private parks, and full-hookup pull-through sites should be requested at booking if a larger rig is involved. For holiday weekends and the summer peak, reserving eight to twelve weeks out is a safe rule of thumb. Weekday arrivals in shoulder season usually find same-week availability.
