Camping near Keowee Key, South Carolina
Keowee Key sits on the western shore of Lake Keowee in Oconee County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. The surrounding area is a compact cluster of state parks, big Duke Energy reservoirs (Keowee and Jocassee), and the southern edge of the Jocassee Gorges wilderness. RV travelers use it as a base for lake days, waterfall hikes, and short drives into Clemson and the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC 11).
Most of the developed camping nearby is inside the South Carolina State Parks system. Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area, Devils Fork State Park, and Oconee State Park all sit within a short drive and share the same central reservation system. Sites range from paved water-and-electric pads suited to larger rigs to walk-in tent areas and cabins.
Closer to town, T. Ed Garrison Arena and Clemson RV Park at the Grove offer flatter, event-oriented parking that works well for Clemson football weekends, horse shows, and travelers who want quick highway access rather than a deep-woods setting.
Things to do around Keowee Key
Lake Jocassee is the headline attraction. Devils Fork State Park provides the only public access to Lake Jocassee, a largely undeveloped 7,500-acre reservoir tucked deep into the Blue Ridge. Boaters use it to reach waterfalls that spill directly into the lake, and the clear, cold water draws scuba divers and swimmers.
Hikers can walk the Oconee Bell Nature Trail at Devils Fork, where spring visitors may spot the rare Oconee bell wildflower. Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area adds ridge trails with views over Lake Keowee, and Oconee State Park offers a small swim lake, paddle rentals, and access to the Foothills Trail.
Fishing is strong year-round, with trout in the deeper reservoirs and bass, bream, crappie, and catfish in the shallower lake arms. Clemson University campus and Memorial Stadium are roughly 20 minutes south.

Spring and fall are the strongest RV seasons. March through May brings wildflowers, cool nights, and the Oconee bell bloom at Devils Fork. Fall delivers dependable weather, leaf color across the Blue Ridge escarpment, and Clemson home football weekends that drive heavy demand at nearby campgrounds and event lots.
Summer is peak lake season. Lake Jocassee stays cold and clear because it is fed by mountain streams, which makes it a magnet for swimmers, paddlers, and divers on hot afternoons. Weekends book out well in advance, especially for lakefront sites; planning at least three months ahead is wise. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so morning lake time is more reliable than late afternoon.
Winter is the quiet season. Freezing nights happen but hard freezes are short. The lakes stay open year-round for fishing and paddling. Some park facilities run reduced hours, and demand drops sharply outside the holiday weeks.

This was an incredible camping experience! It was the ideal way to camp, as we had always used tents before. It was fantastic that the RV was delivered and ready to use! There was ample space for my family to enjoy the room without feeling cramped. A big storm rolled in, and it was a great place to come together and use the appliances inside to cook dinner and watch a movie as a family. I highly recommend this rental for anyone seeking a great camping stay, and for anyone who has always wanted to try out the RV experience!

How to book campsites near Keowee Key
The three closest state parks (Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area, Devils Fork State Park, and Oconee State Park) all reserve through the South Carolina State Parks central system. Bookings can be made online at southcarolinaparks.com or by phone at 1-866-345-PARK. Reservations at state parks may be made up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day in advance of check-in must be made directly through the park.
Cabin and campsite rentals are typically accepted for a two-night minimum, however, during busier periods, minimum stays may be increased at some parks. Lakefront and pull-through sites go first, so flexibility on site number helps. Turnover is frequent close to arrival dates, so checking back for cancellations can pay off.
T. Ed Garrison Arena and Clemson RV Park at the Grove are booked through Clemson University and fill fastest around football home games, graduation, and large equestrian events. Reserve those dates as soon as the schedule is published.
What to expect on arrival
Check-in time for camping is 2:00 p.m. Check-out time is 12:00 p.m. at Devils Fork and the other South Carolina state parks in the area. The main lakeside campground at Devils Fork State Park features 59 paved sites with water and electrical hook-ups, a picnic table, tent pad, and fire ring. The sites are shaded and spacious but you will have no water view. Restrooms with hot showers and a central dump station serve the campground.
All campers, vehicles, trailers, motorhomes, etc, must remain on paved surfaces. Campers with extra vehicles or boats can use the overflow lot on Bootleg Road.
Cell coverage is spotty in the Jocassee Gorges but generally reliable around Keowee Key, Salem, and Clemson. Groceries, propane, and dump stations are easier to find on the Clemson and Seneca side than deep in the state parks.

Good news for first-time renters, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Keowee Key. South Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers commonly listed on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older and complete a quick ID confirmation through the platform when you book, which takes just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Yes, every RV rental in Keowee Key, SC booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind whether you're navigating the winding roads around Lake Keowee or parked at a campground near Salem. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You don't have to negotiate this with the host, RVezy manages the policy directly so it's consistent across every listing. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book sooner rather than later for popular Lake Keowee summer weekends, you'll lock in the best rigs and still have flexibility built into your reservation.

Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base, with many offering free delivery within 15 miles. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, great for swimming Lake Keowee's famously clear water. Winters are mild, with highs around 50 to 55 degrees, making it one of the South's best off-season RV camping Keowee Key options. Pro tip: book your fall-foliage trip by July, peak leaf weekends sell out fast.
weather.gov/gsp/climateI've never rented an RV before, will I be able to handle it?
You've got this, first time renting an RV in Keowee Key is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation walkthrough at pickup, covering how to operate the generator, slide-outs, awning, water and sewer hookups, propane, and the dash controls. Many Keowee Key area hosts also offer delivery and setup, so the RV is already parked, leveled, and hooked up at your campsite when you arrive. Class C motorhomes drive much like a large pickup truck, and travel trailers can be pulled by most half-ton SUVs and trucks. Pro tip: ask your host for a short video walkthrough before pickup, and request their cell number, Upstate hosts are famously responsive and happy to coach you through your first night.
rvezy.com/blog/first-time-rv-renters-guideWhat if something breaks down during my Keowee Key RV trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 11 (the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway), have a battery issue at South Cove County Park, or need a tow off a tight Keowee Key community road, help is just a phone call away. Your host is also your direct lifeline for anything RV-specific (slide-out stuck, AC quirks, generator questions), and most Upstate hosts respond within minutes. RVezy's support team is reachable throughout your trip if you need extra help coordinating. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it makes any service call lightning fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Keowee Key RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed. From Keowee Key you're well positioned for multi-state RV road trips, popular routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway into North Carolina (entrance near Asheville, 75 miles away), the Great Smoky Mountains into Tennessee (about 110 miles), and Savannah, GA (around 250 miles southeast). Travel into Canada is permitted on many RVezy rentals as long as the host approves and your protection plan covers it, just message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: for cross-state Blue Ridge trips, book a Class C or travel trailer under 30 feet, the parkway has tunnel height restrictions and tight curves that larger Class A coaches struggle with.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Keowee Key RV trip?
South Carolina helps your wallet here, the state has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, typically running below the national average. Plan on 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 10 to 14 MPG for your tow vehicle if you rent a travel trailer. A weekend round trip from Keowee Key to Asheville (150 miles) typically costs $45 to $70 in fuel, while a Smoky Mountains loop (250 miles) runs about $75 to $115. Pro tip: fuel up at the Pilot or Love's near Anderson on I-85 before heading back into the Keowee Key area, prices in Seneca and Salem tend to run higher than the interstate stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Keowee Key?
Earlier is better, especially for waterfront sites. South Carolina State Parks (Keowee-Toxaway and Devils Fork) open reservations 13 months out through the official Reserve South Carolina system, and Lake Keowee waterfront spots at South Cove County Park often book 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Clemson home-football weekends fill up fastest. Mile Creek Park (Pickens County) and Crooked Creek RV Park can usually be booked 30 to 60 days out for shoulder seasons. Pro tip: book your campground first, then your RVezy rental, that way you know your site dimensions and hookup type (30-amp vs 50-amp) and can match the RV accordingly with confidence.
southcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the roads like for driving an RV around Keowee Key?
Driving around Keowee Key is very manageable, you'll mostly travel on US-76, SC-130, SC-188, and SC-11 (the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway), all two-lane roads with good shoulders and gentle Blue Ridge foothills. Watch for two things: the winding climbs as you head north toward Salem and Jocassee, and narrow campground roads at Mile Creek Park and Keowee-Toxaway State Park, where rigs over 35 feet need extra care navigating curves. Summer afternoon thunderstorms (June to August) can pop up quickly, so check the forecast before driving. Pro tip: avoid I-85 through Greenville at 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, take SC-153 or Highway 123 instead for a calmer route back to your Keowee Key RV rental.
scdot.org/travel/travel-traffic.aspxWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Keowee Key?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Keowee Key offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, with full sewer at private parks like Crooked Creek RV Park, Misty Lake RV Park, and Shibby RV Park. Keowee-Toxaway State Park's 10 RV sites have 50-amp power and water with a centralized dump station near the entrance. South Cove County Park and Mile Creek Park offer water and electric at the sites plus dump stations. Most also have hot-shower bath houses, laundry, boat ramps, and swimming areas on Lake Keowee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground and dump tanks on your way out, the closest public dump station outside campgrounds is at the Oconee County convenience center near Seneca.
southcarolinaparks.com/keowee-toxaway/campingWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Keowee Key?
You'll feel right at home. A typical RV rental in Keowee Key sleeps 4 to 8 and comes with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seat-belted seating for travel. Most Class C motorhomes and larger travel trailers include a TV, and many Keowee Key hosts now equip rigs with onboard Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink, perfect for lakeside remote-work weekends. Generators are standard on motorhomes for off-grid lake stays. Pro tip: filter for the specific amenities you need (Wi-Fi, generator, pet-friendly) on RVezy so every listing you see matches your trip plan.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keowee%20Key%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Keowee Key RV rental?
Lots of fun options. Keowee Key area hosts commonly offer add-ons like kitchen kits ($30 to $50), linen and bedding packages ($25 to $50 per bed), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30), portable grills ($20 to $40), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour), and propane refill ($25 to $40). Many also rent paddleboards, kayaks, and tubes, perfect for Lake Keowee's clear coves. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Seneca, Salem, Six Mile, or Westminster, with most hosts offering doorstep delivery for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies average 100 to 150 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.45 per extra mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit upfront, hosts often discount packaged add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keowee%20Key%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay entirely through the RVezy platform with a major credit card, never directly to the host. At booking, you'll pay a portion to confirm with the balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class, is placed on hold (not charged) shortly before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your Keowee Key RV trip, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with photos, follow the host's mileage and generator-hour policy, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: snap dated photos of every wall, the exterior, and the dashboard at pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to protect your full deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping near Keowee Key actually doable?
Absolutely, and it's a hidden gem. Winter RV camping near Keowee Key is mild compared to most of the country, with daytime highs typically 50 to 58 degrees and nights dropping to the mid-30s. Keowee-Toxaway State Park, South Cove County Park, and Crooked Creek RV Park stay open year-round with water and electric service, and many private parks offer winter monthly rates. Look for RVs listed with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace for the coziest cold-snap stays, simply filter or message hosts to confirm. Bonus: winter is when Lake Keowee is at its most peaceful, and you can often score waterfront sites that are impossible to book in summer. Pro tip: pack a heated water hose for January and February stays, it prevents freeze-ups on chilly mornings.
