Campgrounds and RV parks near McCormick, SC

McCormick sits in western South Carolina on the shoreline of Lake Thurmond, also called Strom Thurmond Lake or Clarks Hill Lake, a 71,100-acre reservoir on the Savannah River that forms the border with Georgia. The area is dominated by lake-access campgrounds, with most sites operated by the South Carolina and Georgia state park systems plus U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation areas along the shore. RV renters have several distinct options within a short drive of downtown McCormick. Hickory Knob State Resort Park lies about eight miles west and pairs a lakefront campground with a full-service resort, an 18-hole golf course, and a lodge. Baker Creek State Park sits directly on the lake with water and electric hookups, and Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area occupies a peninsula further south near Plum Branch. Across the state line in Georgia, Elijah Clark State Park offers a larger campground on the western shore of the same reservoir. Lake Thurmond RV Park rounds out the local options for renters who prefer a private-park setting close to town.

South Carolina state parks, including Hickory Knob, Baker Creek, and Hamilton Branch, take reservations through the official South Carolina State Parks reservation system up to 13 months in advance. A two-night minimum applies to campsites, and any booking made less than one day before check-in must be arranged directly with the park office. All firewood brought into South Carolina state parks must originate in state and from within 50 miles of the park. Elijah Clark State Park uses the Georgia State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica, also with a 13-month booking window and same-day arrivals available. For summer weekends and holidays, waterfront sites at all four state parks fill early, so booking two to three months out is a reasonable minimum. Lake Thurmond RV Park can be booked directly through the operator and often has shorter minimum stays.
