Campgrounds near Ninety Six, South Carolina
Ninety Six sits in South Carolina's Piedmont region in Greenwood County, roughly between Greenville and Augusta. The town is best known as the location of Ninety Six National Historic Site, a National Park Service unit that preserves the original 18th-century town site and the earthen Star Fort where a Revolutionary War siege took place in 1781. For RV travelers, the area's biggest draw is Lake Greenwood, an 11,400-acre reservoir in the heart of South Carolina's Piedmont, which anchors most of the nearby camping.
The closest full-service option is Lake Greenwood State Park, a state-run campground on the reservoir's shoreline just east of town. Private and resort-style options fill in the gaps: Moon Landing RV Park and Marina and Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort sit on the same lake, while the Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey works well for travelers coming in off I-26. Lake Thurmond RV Park, farther south along the Savannah River reservoir chain, is a viable overflow choice when Lake Greenwood is full.
Most campgrounds in the area cater to Class A, Class C, and travel-trailer sizes, with paved or gravel pads, water and electric hookups, and boat access to nearby lakes.
Things to do around Ninety Six
Lake Greenwood is the center of activity. The reservoir holds largemouth bass, bream, black crappie, stripers, perch, and channel catfish, and Lake Greenwood State Park has two large boat ramps that provide campers with access to the lake. Swimming, kayaking, and pontoon days are the standard summer routine, and the park participates in the state's Tackle Loaner Program, so gear can be borrowed at the office.
On land, the one-mile interpretive trail at Ninety Six National Historic Site takes visitors out to the Star Fort battleground, and the visitor center runs a short park film and small museum. Inside Lake Greenwood State Park, the 0.8-mile Greenwood Lake Nature Trail is the park's only hiking path, an easy walk that begins near the Drummond Center and winds through hardwood forest. Sumter National Forest, the Newberry Opera House, and downtown Greenwood are all within a short drive.

When to visit Ninety Six: seasonal patterns

March - May
72° / 50°F 93 mmMild days, wildflowers bloom, prime shoulder-season window
- summer
June - August
88° / 68°F 103 mmHot, humid, peak bookings; lakefront sites fill fast

73° / 52°F 87 mmWarm days, cool nights, driest stretch of the year
- winter
December - February
54° / 34°F 100 mmCool and wet; quiet season with low campground demand
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of South Carolina. March through May brings mild days, wisteria and dogwood blooms, and comfortable overnight lows, and the historic site is generally less crowded in the spring and fall months. Late spring also brings the South Carolina Festival of Flowers to Greenwood, which pushes local demand up.
Summer is the peak camping season on Lake Greenwood. Weekends and holidays fill early, and the campground is popular, especially during summer and holiday weekends, often booking up to 13 months in advance. Expect hot, humid afternoons, frequent thunderstorms, and warm lake water. Between April 1 and August 31, campers can stay a maximum of 14 nights at Lake Greenwood, and after the 14th night they must vacate the park for 7 consecutive nights before returning, which shapes long-stay planning.
Winter is the quietest season. Temperatures dip near freezing overnight, but hookup sites remain open at the state park and the KOA operates year-round. Some private marinas reduce services in the off-season, so confirm amenities before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Ninety Six
Lake Greenwood State Park is reserved through the South Carolina State Parks system, not Recreation.gov. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. Camping reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights. Lakefront sites go first, so book as soon as the 13-month window opens if a specific site matters.
The Newberry / I-26 / Sumter NF KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app and is a year-round campground. Moon Landing RV Park and Marina, Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort, and Lake Thurmond RV Park each handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites; call ahead to confirm rig-length limits, big-rig access, and monthly-stay policies.
What to expect at Ninety Six campgrounds
At Lake Greenwood State Park, expect a lakeside layout with 125 paved sites usable by both RVs and tents, each with water and electrical hookups and a picnic table, many paved sites accommodating RVs up to 40 feet, and all sites convenient to hot showers and restrooms. All 125 of the campsites provide 50 amp service, and there is a dump station on site. Wi-Fi is available only at the Drummond Center and the park office area and does not extend to campground locations, so plan on cellular data for streaming.
Sites cluster fairly close together and tree cover varies by loop. Private options like Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort skew toward larger Class A rigs with concrete pads and full hookups, while the KOA in Kinards offers a wooded layout aimed at overnight and short-stay travelers heading to or from the coast.

Lakefront weekends near Lake Greenwood and the spring Festival of Flowers in Greenwood are peak periods, so booking 60 to 90 days ahead locks in better rates. southcarolinaparks.com/lake-greenwood/campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ninety Six, SC?
Good news: for nearly every RV you can rent in Ninety Six, your regular driver's license is all you need. South Carolina only requires a Class E or Class F non-commercial license for RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds, which is heavier than the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers that make up the vast majority of RVezy listings in the area. You'll also need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identification right inside the app before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly, and you're set to drive your Ninety Six RV trip.

You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens. If you get a flat on a back road near Sumter National Forest or need a jump start at Lake Greenwood State Park, one call connects you to help around the clock. Book your RV rental in Ninety Six confidently, knowing you're covered before you turn the key.

southcarolinaparks.com/lake-greenwood/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Ninety Six?
The sweet spots for a Ninety Six RV trip are mid-March through late May and mid-September through early November, when daytime highs hover in the comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and humidity is low. Summers in the South Carolina Piedmont are hot and muggy, with July and August highs often in the upper 80s to mid-90s, but Lake Greenwood makes it bearable for swimming and boating. Winters are mild, with daytime highs in the low 50s, so you can absolutely rent an RV in Ninety Six year-round. Pro tip: visit in late April for the Greenwood Festival of Flowers and warm afternoons that still feel like spring.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it?
You'll do great, and you're in the right place to learn. First time renting an RV is actually easier in Ninety Six than in a big metro because the roads are calm, the terrain is gently rolling, and parking lots at places like the Ninety Six National Historic Site even have dedicated RV spaces. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, propane, slide-outs, tanks, and hookups, plus they're a message away during your trip. You can also choose a smaller Class B campervan or a 20-foot travel trailer for a low-stress first ride. Add delivery to your booking and you can skip driving the rig entirely.
nps.gov/nisi/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat happens if something breaks down during my Ninety Six RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 246, a dead battery at Lake Greenwood State Park, or a tow need on I-26, one phone call brings help your way. For appliance or system issues, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig best and can usually troubleshoot in minutes (a reset breaker, a propane valve, a tank sensor). RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Save both contacts in your phone before you leave the driveway and you'll travel with full confidence.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Ninety Six RV rental across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is totally welcome on most RVezy bookings, which is great because Ninety Six sits within easy reach of three states. Popular RV road trips from Ninety Six include the Blue Ridge Parkway entry near Asheville, North Carolina (about 130 miles), the Georgia coast via Savannah (about 240 miles), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 200 miles). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. If you're planning a long multi-state loop, just message the host before booking to confirm your route and mileage allowance. Most hosts are excited to help plan your itinerary.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel during my Ninety Six RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, so here's a realistic picture. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 10 to 14. South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, often 20 to 40 cents per gallon below the national average, which makes RV camping in Ninety Six genuinely budget-friendly. For a weekend loop of 200 miles, expect to spend roughly $60 to $110 on fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Greenwood or Clinton before heading toward the Sumter National Forest, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ninety Six?
Booking early is the move, because the best campgrounds near Ninety Six fill fast. Lake Greenwood State Park accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance through the South Carolina State Parks reservation system, and lakefront sites for summer weekends and the Festival of Flowers in late April routinely sell out months ahead. For shoulder-season midweek stays, two to four weeks of lead time is usually enough. National forest campgrounds in Sumter National Forest book through Recreation.gov, up to six months out. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set a cancellation alert, sites at Lake Greenwood often open back up as plans change.
southcarolinaparks.com/lake-greenwood/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around Ninety Six?

The terrain is gently rolling Piedmont country, the speed limits on local routes like SC-34, SC-246, and US-178 are moderate, and traffic is light outside of brief rush hours in nearby Greenwood. Watch for low-hanging branches on rural roads and a few tight turns on the approach to Lake Greenwood State Park off Highway 702. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the forecast and pull off if visibility drops. Pro tip: the dedicated RV parking lot at the Ninety Six National Historic Site makes it one of the easiest history stops in South Carolina to visit with a big rig.
