Camping near Sandy Springs, South Carolina
Sandy Springs sits in Anderson County in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, on the eastern shore of Lake Hartwell. The reservoir covers roughly 56,000 acres with 962 miles of shoreline, and it straddles the South Carolina and Georgia border, created by the Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Clemson University sits a short drive north, and Interstate 85 runs just east of town, making access simple from Greenville, Atlanta, or Charlotte.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Clemson RV Park at the Grove is a full-service park in nearby Pendleton with flat pull-through sites. T. Ed Garrison Arena hosts equestrian events and offers hookup sites for visitors traveling with horses. The Shores of Asbury, Anderson / Lake Hartwell KOA Holiday, and Tiger Cove Campground all sit on or beside Lake Hartwell, with lake-adjacent sites that suit families and anglers.
Most lakeside campgrounds operate under either private ownership, the South Carolina State Parks system, or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages the Hartwell Lake reservoir.
Things to do near Sandy Springs
Lake Hartwell is the main draw. The lake supports fishing, boating, and water-skiing, with largemouth, striped and hybrid bass, along with bream, crappie, and catfish. Public boat ramps and day-use areas line both the South Carolina and Georgia shorelines, and swimming is permitted throughout most of the reservoir.
On land, Clemson University and the town of Pendleton offer college-town dining, museums, and football Saturdays in the fall. Fants Grove hosts popular mountain-bike and equestrian trails, and golfers have access to Boscobel Golf Course and the Clemson Walker Course. The Blue Ridge foothills sit within about an hour, opening up waterfalls, state forests, and short mountain drives along Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11).

The lake camping season peaks from late spring through early fall. Lake activities take place year-round at Lake Hartwell; summer brings swimming and water sports, while cooler months suit fishing with warmer layers. Water temperatures are comfortable for swimming from roughly late May through September, and holiday weekends fill fastest.
Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and lower lake traffic, though water levels can rise after heavy rain. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, foliage in the surrounding foothills, and Clemson football weekends that pull heavy crowds to Pendleton and Anderson. Booking well ahead of home games is essential.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Some private parks reduce services or limit amenities, but core Corps of Engineers ramps and the state park remain open. Peak season generally runs April through October, so off-season stays tend to be quieter for anglers and long-term travelers.

How to book a campsite
Reservation windows vary by operator. South Carolina State Parks accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. Nearby Lake Hartwell State Park sits on the reservoir near Fair Play and generally requires a two-night minimum. Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Hartwell Lake are booked through Recreation.gov, where reservations open on a rolling basis exactly six months in advance at 10:00 AM Eastern Time, so peak-season sites should be targeted the morning they release.
Private parks such as Clemson RV Park at the Grove, Anderson / Lake Hartwell KOA Holiday, and Tiger Cove Campground take direct bookings through their own websites or phone lines. Lakefront sites can book up fast; reserve at least three months ahead, and further out for Clemson home-game weekends.
What to expect on-site
Hookup levels vary. Clemson RV Park at the Grove offers full hookups with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp power on level sites designed for larger rigs. Lake Hartwell State Park sites include water and electric hookups, with restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the lake typically offer water and electric, with centralized dump stations.
Cell coverage is generally reliable on the South Carolina side, though signal drops in wooded coves. Firewood rules are strict: all firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away. Leashed pets are welcome in most outdoor areas, and quiet hours are enforced at both public and private campgrounds. Bring bug spray in warmer months and a shade setup, as lakefront sites can be exposed.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandy%20Springs%2C%20South%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sandy Springs, SC?
Good news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sandy Springs and drive nearly every rig on RVezy. South Carolina only requires a non-commercial Class E or Class F license for larger motorhomes, which is well above what most Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers weigh. You must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID inside the booking flow. No CDL, no special endorsement, and no trip to the South Carolina DMV required before your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Sandy Springs covered if something happens?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book through RVezy. Every Sandy Springs RV rental on the platform includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for most damages to the vehicle and never stranded if something unexpected happens on the way to Lake Hartwell. During checkout, you (not the host) choose the level of protection that fits your trip, so you can scale coverage up for a longer Blue Ridge road trip or keep it lean for a quick weekend at Twin Lakes. It provides serious peace of mind, especially for first-time renters heading into the foothills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Sandy Springs RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy across every listing, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room if your plans shift. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you can rebook. If you are ever unsure, RVezy's support team can walk you through your options before, during, and after your trip, so you can book that Lake Hartwell weekend with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Sandy Springs, SC?
Yes, you will find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Sandy Springs. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Lake Hartwell State Park allows leashed pets throughout the campground and on its trails, Sadlers Creek State Park has miles of leashed-pet-friendly shoreline, and the Anderson County Dog Park is a short drive east. Tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed preferences, and ask if they include a pet bed, bowls, or a tie-out leash, many local hosts do.
southcarolinaparks.com/lake-hartwellCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Sandy Springs?
Yes, RV delivery in Sandy Springs is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig directly to Lake Hartwell State Park, Sadlers Creek State Park, Springfield Campground, or even a private lake house driveway, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You just show up with your groceries and swimsuit. Delivery fees are usually based on distance from the host's location, so closer drop-offs around Anderson, Pendleton, and Clemson tend to be the most affordable. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it near you.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandy%20Springs%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow far can I travel on a Sandy Springs RV trip?
You can go a long way, and the location is ideal for it. Sandy Springs sits right between Interstate 85 and Lake Hartwell, putting you within easy reach of incredible road trip destinations. Greenville, SC is about 35 miles northeast, Asheville, NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway are roughly 90 miles north, Atlanta, GA is around 120 miles southwest, Charleston, SC is about 220 miles southeast, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is around 150 miles north. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, and you will find plenty offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops. Always confirm the daily mileage cap on the listing before you book.
scdot.org/travel/travel-trip-planning.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Sandy Springs, SC?
You are spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Sandy Springs sit within a 30-minute drive: Lake Hartwell State Park (paved RV sites with water and electric, boat ramps, and a fishing pier), Sadlers Creek State Park in Anderson (RV sites on a peninsula jutting into Lake Hartwell), Springfield Campground (a US Army Corps of Engineers favorite with shaded sites on the lake), Twin Lakes Campground (Corps-run with a great swim beach), and Anderson/Lake Hartwell KOA (full hookups and big-rig friendly). For RV camping in Sandy Springs that feels close to home base, the state and Corps parks are unbeatable for the price and lake access.
southcarolinaparks.com/lake-hartwell/campingWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Sandy Springs, SC?
The sweet spot for a Sandy Springs RV trip is late March through May and again from September through early November. During those shoulder seasons, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s, humidity drops, and the lake is gorgeous without the peak-summer crowds. Summer (June through August) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, but it is prime time for swimming and boating on Lake Hartwell, just plan to run the air conditioning. Winters are mild (highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s) and many local campgrounds stay open year-round, making December and January a quiet, budget-friendly option.
weather.gov/gsp/What if it's my first time renting an RV?
You are going to be just fine, and Sandy Springs is a fantastic place to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery) covering propane, water, the generator, slide-outs, awnings, and how to dump the tanks, so you are never left guessing. You can also message the host through the listing before you book to ask any question, no matter how small. For your first run, consider a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer, and pick a nearby base like Lake Hartwell State Park (just 20 minutes from Sandy Springs) so you are not driving far while you get comfortable. Hosts and RVezy's 24/7 support team have your back the whole trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are covered, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 187, a dead battery at a Lake Hartwell boat ramp, or any mechanical hiccup heading up US-76 toward the mountains, one call gets help dispatched to you. Your host is also just a message away and usually knows the rig inside and out, which makes troubleshooting things like the water pump or generator quick. Tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before you leave Sandy Springs, cell service can get patchy in the foothills north of Walhalla.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Sandy Springs RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to neighboring states, and the routes are incredible. An RV road trip from Sandy Springs can take you into Georgia (Atlanta, Helen, the Chattahoochee National Forest), North Carolina (Asheville, the Great Smokies, Pisgah National Forest), Tennessee (Knoxville and Gatlinburg), and beyond, all generally allowed on RVezy bookings. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and should be confirmed directly on the listing before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. For long interstate loops, look for listings that advertise unlimited mileage, and confirm out-of-state travel with your host in the messages before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Sandy Springs RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan for than you might think. A Class B campervan rental in Sandy Springs typically gets 16 to 20 miles per gallon (MPG), a Class C motorhome runs around 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A coach lands closer to 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, but expect about a 25 to 30 percent drop from its normal MPG. South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, often well under the national average, and you will find plenty of affordable fill-ups along Interstate 85 near Anderson and Clemson. Tip: top off in South Carolina before crossing into Georgia or North Carolina, where prices usually tick higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sandy Springs?
For the most popular lakefront spots, plan ahead. Lake Hartwell State Park reservations are booked through the South Carolina State Parks system, with summer weekends and Clemson home football game weekends filling up two to three months in advance. US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like Springfield, Twin Lakes, and Oconee Point are reserved through Recreation.gov and can be booked up to six months ahead, which is what you should do for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. For shoulder-season weekday trips, you can often grab a site one to two weeks out. Tip: set a calendar reminder six months before your target date.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the driving conditions like around Sandy Springs, SC?
You will find the driving around Sandy Springs refreshingly easy for RV travel. The town sits along US-76 and SC-187 with quick access to Interstate 85, which is wide, well-maintained, and the main artery between Atlanta and Charlotte. Local roads are mostly flat to gently rolling, with no mountain passes, low bridges, or downtown squeeze points to worry about. Heading north toward the Blue Ridge (Highway 11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway) you will get curvier, more scenic terrain (gorgeous, but take your time). Watch for afternoon summer thunderstorms and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk. Clemson home football Saturdays bring heavy traffic on US-76 and SC-93, so plan pickup or drop-off around kickoff.
scdot.org/travel/travel-trip-planning.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sandy Springs?
Local campgrounds are very RV-friendly. At Lake Hartwell State Park, paved standard sites have individual water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station on-site (no sewer at the site, but easy dumping on the way out). Army Corps parks like Springfield and Twin Lakes offer water and electric, swim beaches, and boat ramps. Carolina Landing RV Resort and Anderson/Lake Hartwell KOA have full hookups (water, electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, and laundry. Need to fill fresh water or dump tanks mid-trip? Most state and Corps campgrounds have free dump stations for registered campers, and the Pilot truck stop off Interstate 85 near Anderson has a public dump for a small fee.
southcarolinaparks.com/lake-hartwell/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Sandy Springs?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental in Sandy Springs comes with real beds (queen master, bunks, and convertible dinettes that sleep two to eight depending on the rig), a full kitchen with a fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted travel seats for passengers. Most listings also include a TV, and many have onboard Wi-Fi boosters or a generator for off-grid time. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer the same amenities once you are parked. Always check the listing's amenity list, and message the host to confirm sleeping arrangements (and whether linens, towels, and kitchen kits are included, many bundle them in).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandy%20Springs%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat add-ons can I get with my Sandy Springs RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer plenty of helpful extras. Common Sandy Springs add-ons include delivery and setup (great if you want the rig waiting for you at Lake Hartwell State Park), generator use packages, propane fill, linen and towel bundles, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, and even kayaks or stand-up paddleboards (perfect for exploring the extensive shoreline of Lake Hartwell). Mileage policies vary by host: some offer 100 to 150 miles per day with a per-mile fee after that, and others offer unlimited mileage for set distances. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or around Sandy Springs, Anderson, or Pendleton, with drop-off at the same spot unless delivery is arranged.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandy%20Springs%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
It is clean and predictable. When you book your RV rental in South Carolina through RVezy, payment is handled securely through the platform, no cash or side payments to the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts and released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the condition it left in (fuel topped, tanks dumped if required, no new damage). Deposit amounts vary by listing but are shown clearly before you confirm. Tip to avoid any deposit issues: take a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, follow the host's checklist, and message any small concerns through the RVezy app so everything is documented in one place.
