Campgrounds near Southern Shops
Southern Shops is a census-designated place in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, sitting in the Upstate region a short drive from downtown Spartanburg and the I-26 and I-85 interchange. The area works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the foothills of the Blue Ridge, with easy access to state parks, lakes, and larger towns like Greenville and Asheville.
RV options in the immediate area include Cunningham RV Park, Pine Ridge Campground, Whispering Winds RV Park, Beckon Ridge RV Park, and 290 RV Park, which together cover a mix of overnight stopover and longer-stay setups with full-hookup pull-through sites available at several parks.
For state-park camping, Croft State Park sits about five miles from downtown Spartanburg and offers more than 17 miles of biking and hiking trails, fishing and boating on two lakes including 165-acre Lake Craig, and equestrian facilities on rolling, wooded terrain just five miles from bustling downtown Spartanburg. The park is the most established public campground in the immediate region and a common anchor for trip planning.
Things to do near Southern Shops
Outdoor activity in the area centers on Croft State Park, where visitors can hike, mountain bike, ride horseback, geocache, birdwatch, and fish two lakes including the 165-acre Lake Craig. The 165-acre Lake Craig offers fishing opportunities for bass, bream, and catfish, plus kayak and canoe rentals. Shaded trails suit families and casual riders, and no gas motors are allowed on the lake.
Spartanburg itself is a short drive and offers museums, an amphitheater, and family attractions useful for a rainy afternoon. The Blue Ridge foothills near Tryon and Hendersonville are within about an hour, and Greenville's Falls Park and Swamp Rabbit Trail are also reachable as a day trip.
For RV travelers with kids, several private parks in the Southern Shops area offer playgrounds and pools that provide a convenient wind-down after a day of driving or sightseeing.

The Upstate has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, cool winters, rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year with heavier afternoon thunderstorms in the warmer months, and little snowfall. Camping is viable year-round in the area, but conditions and demand vary by season.
The best time to visit the area is during spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak, while summer offers a full array of activities but can be hot and crowded. These shoulder seasons draw the strongest weekend demand at Croft State Park, so booking early matters. Summer brings heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon storms, but sites with 50-amp service for air conditioning stay in demand from families on school break.
Winters are quieter but cooler, with limited services. Travelers planning a cold-season trip should confirm site availability before booking, since state-park sites may be temporarily closed on a rotating basis for periodic remediation work.

This was an incredible camping experience! It was the ideal way to camp, as we had always used tents before. It was fantastic that the RV was delivered and ready to use! There was ample space for my family to enjoy the room without feeling cramped. A big storm rolled in, and it was a great place to come together and use the appliances inside to cook dinner and watch a movie as a family. I highly recommend this rental for anyone seeking a great camping stay, and for anyone who has always wanted to try out the RV experience!

How to book campgrounds near Southern Shops
Private parks in the Southern Shops area generally handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone, and some list on third-party platforms such as Campspot and Good Sam. Sites are typically pull-through with easy access from I-85 and I-26, which suits big rigs and last-minute overnight stops, though weekend availability tightens in peak months.
For Croft State Park, reservations run through the South Carolina State Parks system. Reservations require a minimum 2-night stay and can be made up to 13 months in advance. Longer stays may be required during peak season and holidays, maximum length of stay is 14 nights, and after reaching the maximum length of stay campers must vacate the park for 7 days. Same-day reservations must be made directly through the park.
What to expect
Private RV parks in the Southern Shops area are geared toward practical overnight and short-stay use, with a mix of transient travelers and longer-term residents. Most offer full hookups, pull-through sites, and easy interstate access, and several have amenities like laundry, dump stations, and playgrounds.
At Croft State Park, each site is packed gravel and has water and electrical hookups, some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, twenty-five of the campsites offer 50 amp service, and the campground is convenient to restrooms with hot showers. The 50-site family campground is divided into two areas: the Inland section with 30-amp service and the Lakeside section offering 20/30/50-amp service with easier access to Lake Craig. Cell service is generally usable in the area, but tree cover can weaken signals in the state park.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV from Southern Shops into other states or across the border?
Yes, interstate road trips are one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Southern Shops. Most hosts allow travel throughout the Southeast, including North Carolina (Asheville and the Smokies are right next door), Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida, with protection coverage following you across state lines. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Crossing into Canada may be allowed case-by-case, so message the host directly through the listing before booking if that is on your itinerary. Popular runs from Southern Shops include the Blue Ridge Parkway loop through North Carolina and a roughly 4-hour drive to Savannah, Georgia.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Southern Shops RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but South Carolina helps you out with some of the lowest gas prices in the country. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 mpg, Class B campervans 14 to 18 mpg, and pickup trucks towing travel trailers around 10 to 12 mpg. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Southern Shops to Asheville and back, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's just off I-85 Exit 80 near Gaffney before heading into the mountains, where prices climb noticeably once you cross into North Carolina. Diesel rigs cost a bit more but stretch much further on the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Southern Shops?
For South Carolina state parks like Croft and nearby Kings Mountain, book several months ahead through the official SouthCarolinaParks.com reservation system, especially for spring and fall weekends when sites disappear fast. Private parks like Pine Ridge Campground, Cunningham RV Park, and Spartanburg NE / Gaffney KOA usually have more flexibility and can often be booked 2 to 6 weeks out. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) and BMW Performance Center event dates fill up fastest. Pro tip: South Carolina state park reservation windows open well in advance of arrival, so if you have a specific Croft site in mind for a fall foliage weekend, set a calendar reminder and book the moment it opens.

The area sits along Highway 9 and Highway 221 with wide lanes, mild grades, and easy access to I-85 and I-26, the two main arteries through the Upstate. Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms (pull over if rain blinds you), and be alert on the climb up US-25 or I-26 toward Hendersonville, where grades steepen and crosswinds pick up. Bridge clearances on state routes are well-marked. Local insider tip: avoid the I-85/I-26 interchange during BMW shift change around 3 to 4 PM if you're heading toward Greenville.

Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides of the booking. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts (amounts vary by RV value) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, mileage, and fuel level at both pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you received, and empty the holding tanks at a dump station before drop-off.
