Campgrounds near Walhalla
Walhalla sits in the Blue Ridge foothills of Oconee County, South Carolina, roughly midway between the Chattooga River and Lake Keowee. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the northwestern corner of the state, with several public campgrounds within a 30-minute drive and easy access to Sumter National Forest.
Oconee State Park rests deep in the Blue Ridge foothills, with wooded campgrounds first built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It also serves as the southern trailhead for the Foothills Trail, a long-distance route across the Blue Ridge Escarpment toward Table Rock. Nearby, Devils Fork State Park provides the only public access to Lake Jocassee, a largely undeveloped 7,500-acre reservoir tucked deep into the Blue Ridge.
Other nearby options include Misty Lake RV Park, Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area on Lake Keowee, and Lake Hartwell State Park on the South Carolina-Georgia line. Together they cover full-hookup RV sites, walk-in tent areas, cabins, and boat-in backcountry sites.
Things to do near Walhalla
The area is built around water and mountains. Oconee State Park sits adjacent to Sumter National Forest and serves as a jumping-off point to the nearby Chattooga and Chauga rivers, known for whitewater paddling and trout fishing. At Devils Fork State Park, Lake Jocassee is the focal point, with paddling to lakeside waterfalls, secluded coves for trout and smallmouth bass, and unusually clear water that draws snorkelers and scuba divers.
Hikers have options at every skill level. At Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area, the 1.4-mile Natural Bridge Trail leaves from the Jocassee Gorges Visitor Center and passes rock outcrops and seasonal wildflowers along Poe Creek. Anglers head to Lake Hartwell State Park, where boaters and shoreline anglers target bass, crappie, and catfish across the sprawling reservoir on the Savannah River.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. Rhododendron and mountain laurel bloom from late April into June, and spring hikers on the Oconee Bell Nature Trail at Devils Fork can spot the rare Oconee bell wildflower during its short bloom. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and foliage color across the foothills, though weekends fill quickly.
Summer is the peak season for lake use and family trips. Sites book far in advance, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Camping is possible year-round at Oconee State Park, with summer months best for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding on the park lake. Pedal-boat rentals are seasonal, and stocked trout fishing shifts activity into the cooler months.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Daytime temperatures are cool but usually workable, occasional light snow is possible, and campground availability opens up. Trout fishing and long views through leafless trees are the trade-offs for shorter days and cold nights.
How to book
Most public campgrounds near Walhalla belong to the South Carolina State Parks system and share one booking platform. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. Camping reservations require a minimum of two nights.
Lakefront and holiday-weekend sites go fastest, especially at Devils Fork and Lake Hartwell. Booking at least three months ahead of summer or holiday weekends gives the best chance at a spot. Private options such as Misty Lake RV Park are booked directly with the operator and can be a useful backup when state parks are full.
All firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away, so plan to buy locally rather than transport it from home.
What to expect
Expect wooded, shaded sites rather than open resort layouts. At Devils Fork State Park, the main lakeside campground has 59 paved sites with water and electric hookups, each with a picnic table, tent pad, and fire ring, and many sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. A central dump station serves the campground, and there is no sewer at the sites.
Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area is smaller and more primitive. It offers 24 campsites total: 10 paved sites with individual water and 50-amp electric that fit RVs up to 40 feet, 10 tent sites with water and 20-amp power, and three backcountry sites reached by trail or paddle from Lake Keowee. A central restroom with hot showers and a dump station serve the campground.
Cell service is spotty in the mountain hollows, black bears are active in the region, and firewood must be sourced locally. Pack layers even in summer, since nights near the lakes cool off noticeably after sunset.

southcarolinaparks.com/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Walhalla?
Driving an RV around Walhalla is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city traffic. The town sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge, so expect gentle hills on Highway 28 and steeper, twistier roads if you head up Highway 107 toward Whitewater Falls or into North Carolina. Roads are well maintained, but watch for tight switchbacks on Highway 28 between Walhalla and Mountain Rest, low-hanging branches on backroads, and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk. Stick to designated truck routes for bigger Class A rigs. Pro tip: avoid Highway 107 in heavy rain or icy conditions, take Highway 11 (the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway) instead, it's gorgeous and easier.

visitoconeesc.com/visit-walhalla-sc/How does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and the host never handles your card details. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold around the time of pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on your booking. As long as you return the rig in the same condition you received it, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's dump and fuel instructions, and send any concerns through RVezy messaging so everything is documented.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in downtown Walhalla?
Downtown Walhalla is small and friendly, but it's still wise to plan parking ahead in a larger rig. The City of Walhalla maintains the West Lot at 100 West Main Street and the East Lot at 121 South Catherine Street, both close to Main Street shops, restaurants, and the Walhalla Performing Arts Center. Smaller campervans and Class B rigs fit easily in standard spots, while larger Class A or fifth wheels are better parked at your campground with delivery used for downtown visits. For Oktoberfest weekend in October, expect street closures and arrive early. Pro tip: park at the Performing Arts Center lot on non-show days, it's spacious and a 2-minute walk to dinner at Garage Taproom.
