Campgrounds and RV parks near Whitmire, SC

The Enoree Ranger District supports hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing across a mixed pine-hardwood forest, with the Broad River providing paddling and bank fishing. The area around Brick House Campground offers wildlife and plant observation, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, and photography, with strong hunting opportunities for deer and wild turkey. The Palmetto Trail and the 30-mile Buncombe Horse Trail run through nearby sections of Sumter National Forest, and the 24-mile Enoree OHV Trail lies a short drive north. State parks add lake-based recreation. Chester State Park centers on a 160-acre lake with a nature trail along the shoreline and a 27-hole disc golf course. Croft State Park covers more than 7,000 acres of wooded terrain, with an extensive trail network for hikers, bikers, and equestrians and fishing on Lake Craig. Downtown Newberry and the Newberry Opera House sit a short drive south.

The Enoree District has a long warm season with humid subtropical conditions. Winters are mild, with typical daytime highs in the low 50s Fahrenheit and overnight lows near freezing on the coldest nights. Summers are hot and muggy, with July highs averaging near 90 Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with lower humidity and easier hiking conditions. Hunting seasons matter here. National forest campgrounds see heavier use during fall and winter big-game seasons, and the U.S. Forest Service advises campers to wear bright colors during hunts, which run in April and again from September through January. Brick House Campground between Joanna and Whitmire is open year-round on a reservation-only basis. State park campgrounds in South Carolina generally stay open year-round, with peak demand from spring through fall and holiday weekends filling months ahead. Summer heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects are the main warm-weather concerns.

Site standards vary widely. National forest campgrounds in the Enoree District are primitive. Brick House offers 21 sites on a single loop with picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts, plus two double vault toilet buildings, but no water, no electrical hookups, and no dump station. Parking spurs are gravel and vary in size, so not all sites can accommodate larger rigs. Rigs should arrive self-contained. State parks offer developed hookup camping. At Chester State Park, each site is packed gravel with individual water and 50-amp electrical hookups, fire rings, lantern holders, picnic tables, and picnic pads; some sites accommodate RVs up to 33 feet, others up to 28 feet, and three are pull-through, with restrooms, hot showers, and a park dump station nearby. At the Newberry KOA, amenities include full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, Wi-Fi, a saltwater pool, laundry, showers, propane, a dump station, camp store, and playground.
