Campgrounds and RV parks near Alcoa, TN

The primary draw is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From the Townsend entrance, RVers can reach Cades Cove Loop Road, Laurel Falls, and the Little River trout streams within 30 to 45 minutes. Tubing and swimming on the Little River are common summer activities, and the Townsend corridor offers protected river access for families. West of Alcoa, the Tennessee River widens into Fort Loudoun and Tellico lakes. Swimming, fishing, and boating are the main draws, with pontoon boats, paddleboards, paddleboats, and kayaks available for rent at the office at Yarberry. The Foothills Parkway offers a paved scenic drive suitable for larger rigs, and downtown Maryville and Knoxville provide restaurants, grocery resupply, and museums for rain days.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of East Tennessee. April and May bring wildflowers to the Smokies and daytime highs in the 60s to mid 70s, while October delivers reliable leaf color across the higher elevations and the driest conditions of the year. Fall weekends, especially in mid-October, are the single busiest period for park campgrounds and nearby lake sites. Summer is hot, humid, and thunderstorm-prone. Alcoa sits in a humid subtropical climate zone, which translates to hot, muggy summers and cool winters. Afternoon storms are frequent from June through August, and lake campgrounds fill on weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Winters are mild at valley elevations but colder and occasionally snowy in the mountains. Several smaller Smokies campgrounds, including Abrams Creek, Balsam Mountain, Big Creek, Cataloochee, Cosby, and Look Rock, have remained closed due to storm damage repairs or road improvements, while the largest campgrounds, Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont, are open and operating. Confirm status before booking off-season trips.

Expect a clear split between rustic national park campgrounds and full-service private and TVA-partner parks. Inside the Smokies, there are no electrical or water hookups in any national park campgrounds, and no showers on site. RV renters who need 30 or 50 amp power, water, or a dump station should plan on private parks near Townsend, Maryville, or the Fort Loudoun and Tellico Lake shoreline. Lakefront sites at Yarberry tend to be spacious and largely lakefront, with fire rings, picnic tables, and 50/30 amp service and water at every site. Cell service is limited inside the national park, GPS routing can send larger rigs onto narrow mountain roads, and bears are active in the region, so all food, coolers, and trash must be stored inside the RV or in provided lockers.
