Campgrounds near Atoka, Tennessee
Atoka sits in Tipton County about 25 miles north of Memphis along US-51, placing RV travelers within easy reach of the lower Mississippi River bluffs and two nearby Tennessee State Parks. The town itself is a bedroom community, so most overnight options are a short drive north into rural Lauderdale County or south into Shelby County and the Memphis metro.
To the north, Fort Pillow State Park sits on the Chickasaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, and its Family Campground has fifteen campsites that accommodate RVs and campers with 20, 30, 50-amp electrical and water hookups, and some sites can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. South of Atoka, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park covers 12,539 acres along the Mississippi River just north of Memphis.
For full-hookup city stays, Agricenter RV Park in East Memphis, Cook's Lake RV Resort and Campground on the north side of town, and Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground near the Elvis Presley estate round out the closest private options.
Things to do near Atoka
Fort Pillow pairs Civil War history with river-bluff hiking. Visitors can hike to the restored fortification, explore the museum, and enjoy stunning views from the overlook, and Fort Pillow Lake supports bank and small-boat fishing.
Meeman-Shelby Forest offers a broader activity mix. The park features a diverse landscape of hardwood forest, wetlands, and lakes, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, and wildlife viewing. The park sits atop the scenic Chickasaw Bluffs and features over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails through cypress swamps and hardwood forests, and Poplar Tree Lake provides fishing opportunities and boat rentals.
From Agricenter RV Park or Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground, downtown Memphis attractions including Beale Street and Graceland are a short drive south.

December - February
54° / 36°F 120 mmCool and damp; state parks allow extended winter stays.
West Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, contrasting with cold winters, and rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can occur during the warmer months. Spring is the wettest stretch, and severe weather including tornadoes is most common from March through May.
Summer brings peak humidity and highs near the low 90s Fahrenheit. Shaded sites at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park and Fort Pillow State Park book earliest for weekends and holidays. Fall is generally the driest and most pleasant season, with cooler nights and thinner mosquito pressure once temperatures drop.
Winter camping remains viable at most parks in the area. State-park campgrounds stay open year-round, and maximum stay for camping is 14 days, extended to 28 days from December 1 to February 28/29, which accommodates longer cold-weather stays. Snow is uncommon but possible, and river-adjacent roads can flood after prolonged rain.
How to book campsites near Atoka
Tennessee State Parks use a single central reservation system. Sites at Fort Pillow State Park and Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park can be booked online through reserve.tnstateparks.com or by phone. Advanced reservations are available prior to arrival and may be made up to 1 year in advance, and there is a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite that supports the reservation system.
After the maximum stay, members of the camping party must vacate the park for 3 consecutive nights before returning, and this limit applies to both the group and the camping unit. Cancellations follow a tiered forfeiture schedule that tightens as the arrival date approaches.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Agricenter RV Park, Cook's Lake RV Resort and Campground, and Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground each take reservations through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on the ground
Fort Pillow's campground is small and quiet. The campground is free of trash cans and has a dump station with a dumpster, recycling, and a spot for gray and black water located at the entrance of the campground. Cell service on the bluffs can be spotty.
Meeman-Shelby Forest is larger and closer to Memphis traffic. The park campground has 49 campsites, each equipped with a table, grill, electrical and water hookups, a modern bathhouse provides hot showers, and there is a dump station for self-contained trailer rigs. Sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and shade from mature trees can complicate awning setup on tighter loops.
All Tennessee State Parks require certified heat-treated wood, available from concessioners in many campgrounds or from vendors around the park, and this wood is clearly marked with a state or federal seal.
