Campgrounds near Banner Hill, Tennessee
Banner Hill sits in Unicoi County in upper East Tennessee, tucked between the Nolichucky River Gorge and the ridges of the Cherokee National Forest. The community is minutes from Erwin and roughly a half hour from Johnson City, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers heading into the mountains without giving up quick access to groceries, fuel, and interstate travel via I-26.
Campground options in the immediate area range from riverside adventure resorts to quiet family parks. USA Raft Adventure Resort and Nolichucky Gorge Campground both sit directly along the Nolichucky River, while Jonesborough / Cherokee NF KOA Journey, Riverview Campground, and Woodsmoke Campground offer more traditional RV parks a short drive out toward Jonesborough and Unicoi.
The surrounding public land is extensive. The Cherokee National Forest covers roughly 650,000 acres and is split into northern and southern districts by Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with the northern district wrapping around Banner Hill and providing developed campgrounds, trailheads, and dispersed camping within a short drive.
Things to do near Banner Hill
Whitewater is the headline activity. The Nolichucky River cuts one of the deepest gorges in the eastern United States and runs more than two dozen named rapids as it flows out of North Carolina into Tennessee. Local outfitters run guided raft trips, and calmer stretches downstream work for tubing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
The Appalachian Trail crosses the Nolichucky just downstream of Banner Hill, giving RV travelers easy access to day hikes on both sides of the river. Rock Creek Recreation Area, Unaka Mountain, and the wider Cherokee National Forest trail network add waterfalls, swimming holes, and mountain-bike routes.
For down days, the town of Jonesborough, Tennessee's oldest town, is a short drive west, and the Erwin National Fish Hatchery is a family-friendly stop with trout raceways open to visitors.

Spring is the marquee season on the Nolichucky. Snowmelt from the surrounding highlands and spring rains push river levels up, producing the biggest whitewater of the year and drawing serious paddlers. Wildflowers, dogwoods, and redbud bloom through the gorge, and campgrounds along the river fill quickly on weekends from April through May.
Summer brings warm, humid days with average highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. River flows drop, which suits families and first-time rafters looking for gentler water. This is peak campground season, and riverside sites at private parks like USA Raft Adventure Resort and Nolichucky Gorge Campground book out weeks in advance.
Fall delivers cool nights, lower humidity, and strong leaf color through October. Winter is the quiet season: many outfitters shut down, and some Cherokee National Forest campgrounds close or drop to limited services, though private parks in the valley often stay open year-round on a reduced footprint.
How to book campsites near Banner Hill
Cherokee National Forest campgrounds such as Rock Creek Recreation Area are reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. The standard booking window opens six months before the arrival date on a rolling basis, and popular sites move fast for summer weekends and fall color, so setting reminders for the release date is worth doing.
Private campgrounds in the Banner Hill area, including USA Raft Adventure Resort, Nolichucky Gorge Campground, Jonesborough / Cherokee NF KOA Journey, Riverview Campground, and Woodsmoke Campground, are booked directly through each property's own site or by phone. Nolichucky Gorge notes it no longer accepts three-axle fifth-wheel trailers due to its access road, so RV renters should confirm rig length and configuration before reserving.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Banner Hill is mountainous. Roads into riverside campgrounds are narrow, with tight turns and short bridges, so larger Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should read each campground's access notes carefully and consider smaller Class C or travel-trailer setups.
Cell coverage is spotty in the gorge and thins out quickly on forest roads. Most private parks offer hookups and hot showers. Rock Creek Recreation Area in the Cherokee National Forest has electric sites, flush toilets, showers, and a dump station, while more remote Forest Service sites tend to be primitive. Black bears live throughout the Cherokee National Forest, so proper food storage is required at both developed and dispersed sites.
Summer river days can be loud around outfitter bases; quieter sites are usually set back from the shuttle areas. Pack layers year-round, since valley temperatures can differ significantly from higher ridges just a short drive away.

tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainWhen is the best time of year to visit Banner Hill in an RV?
Banner Hill shines from mid-April through late October, with each season offering something different. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and 60 to 75 degree days, perfect for hiking. Summer (June to August) sits in the comfortable 75 to 85 degree range, cooler than the Tennessee lowlands thanks to the 2,000-foot elevation. Fall (mid-September to late October) is the headline act, with peak leaf color usually hitting around the third week of October across the Cherokee National Forest. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow at higher elevations. Pro tip: book your fall foliage RV camping Banner Hill trip 4 to 6 months ahead, October weekends sell out fastest.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Banner Hill area?
You've got this, and you won't be alone. First time renting an RV is exactly what your host is there for: every RVezy pickup includes a hands-on orientation covering driving, leveling, hookups, and emergency systems, so you'll leave feeling confident. The roads around Banner Hill are mostly easygoing, I-26 runs right through Unicoi County with gentle grades, and Highway 19W and 107 are paved scenic routes ideal for first-timers. Save the twistier mountain passes like the Cherohala Skyway for later in your trip once you've got some miles under your belt. Pro tip: ask your host about a Class C motorhome rental Banner Hill, they drive much like a large van and are the easiest learning curve.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/safety.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on my Banner Hill RV trip?
Breathe easy, you're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something feels off, call the roadside hotline first, then message your host through the app, they often know quirks specific to their RV. Cell coverage is solid along I-26 and in Erwin, though it can get spotty deep in Cherokee National Forest, so screenshot your roadside contact details before heading into remote areas like Rocky Fork State Park. Pro tip: the Unicoi County Sheriff's non-emergency line and a Tennessee Highway Patrol post in Johnson City are both within 20 minutes if you need local help.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Banner Hill RV rental to North Carolina, Virginia, or other nearby states?

Interstate travel within the US is allowed on RVezy rentals (just confirm the specific states with your host during booking). Asheville, NC is about 60 miles south, Damascus, VA and the Virginia Creeper Trail are roughly 75 miles northeast, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is accessible within an hour. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Banner Hill loops south through Asheville and the Great Smokies, then back via Gatlinburg, about 250 miles total of jaw-dropping scenery.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect around Banner Hill?
Realistic expectations make for a happy trip. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes return 8 to 12 MPG, larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (figure 10 to 14 MPG combined). Tennessee gas prices typically sit below the national average, with Erwin and Johnson City stations among the cheapest in the region. For a 4-night family RV trip Banner Hill covering 300 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Erwin or Unicoi before heading into Cherokee National Forest, prices climb noticeably once you cross into North Carolina.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Banner Hill?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the prettiest sites. For Cherokee National Forest campgrounds like Rock Creek Recreation Area and Limestone Cove, reservations open six months ahead on Recreation.gov, and summer weekends plus October leaf-peeping dates often fill within days. Tennessee State Parks like Roan Mountain and Davy Crockett take bookings up to 11 months out at tnstateparks.com, with the same competitive demand during fall color. Private parks like Riverpark Campground in Erwin are usually more flexible, even within a week of arrival. Pro tip: if you're set on a fall Banner Hill RV trip, lock in your campground first, then book your RV. Sites are the harder reservation to land.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2733What are the driving conditions like around Banner Hill?
Generally straightforward, with a few mountain quirks to know. I-26 is the main artery through Unicoi County and handles RVs of any size beautifully, with truck lanes on the steeper grades near Sam's Gap at the NC border. Highway 19W toward Erwin and Highway 107 toward Unaka Mountain are paved two-lane roads, easy in daylight but worth avoiding after dark for first-timers due to deer activity. Skip the narrow Forest Service roads off Rock Creek and Indian Grave Gap in anything larger than a Class B. Winter (December to February) can bring icy patches at higher elevations. Pro tip: check TDOT's SmartWay map before mountain drives, especially during fall foliage weekends when traffic peaks.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Banner Hill?
You'll find a great range. Private parks like Riverpark Campground in Erwin offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry. Cherokee National Forest sites such as Rock Creek and Limestone Cove typically provide water spigots, vault or flush toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables but no electrical hookups, ideal if your RV has a generator or solid house batteries. Roan Mountain State Park offers full hookup sites and a dump station. The closest dedicated dump station and potable water fill for boondockers is at Roan Mountain State Park or the Pilot Travel Center off I-26 Exit 23. Pro tip: top off freshwater before heading into the national forest, mountain sites rarely have on-site fills.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainWhat features and amenities can I expect inside a Banner Hill RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rental Banner Hill listings come stocked with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, often a convection oven), wet bath or full bathroom with shower, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for off-grid stays in Cherokee National Forest, plus outdoor add-ons like awnings, camp chairs, and outdoor speakers. TVs are standard; Wi-Fi varies by host and signal availability. Pro tip: if connectivity matters for remote work or kids' streaming, ask the host whether the RV has a cellular booster, mountain signal in Unicoi County can be patchy without one.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-coverageWhat add-ons and pickup options are typical for Banner Hill RV rentals?
Hosts love to make your trip easy. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Banner Hill include linen and kitchen packages ($25 to $75), generators ($15 to $30 per day), bike racks, kayak carriers, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100). Most pickups happen at the host's home base in Erwin, Unicoi, Johnson City, or Jonesborough, with delivery available to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras around $0.35 to $0.45 per mile, and some hosts offer unlimited mileage upgrades. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first booking, it removes nearly every logistics headache and turns pickup day into vacation day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Banner%20Hill%2C%20TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Banner Hill RV rental?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through RVezy, no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers, which keeps your booking protected. You'll pay your trip total when you book (rental, fees, chosen protection plan, and any add-ons), and a refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV and protection level you select. Assuming the RV is returned in the same condition with no policy violations, the deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off, it's the fastest way to ensure your deposit returns smoothly and confirms your Banner Hill RV trip ends as well as it started.
