Camping near Bean Station, Tennessee
Bean Station sits in Grainger County on the north shore of Cherokee Lake, a TVA impoundment of the Holston River created by Cherokee Dam. The town is roughly halfway between Knoxville and the Tri-Cities, which makes it a practical base for RV renters aiming at Cherokee Lake, the Clinch Mountain ridgeline, and the northern approaches to the Great Smoky Mountains.
Most developed camping in the area sits along the Cherokee Reservoir shoreline. Panther Creek State Park is located along the shores of Cherokee Reservoir in the historic Holston River Valley, about six miles west of Morristown, and offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, and lake access. Cherokee Dam Campground is located in Jefferson City on the south side of TVA's Cherokee Dam, adjacent to Cherokee Lake with a large public boat ramp, swimming area, and day-use area.
Additional options within a short drive include Greenlees Fall Creek Campground on the south side of the lake near Russellville, Mammoth Ridge RV Park closer to town, and Rock Bottom Horse Camp northeast in Ewing, Virginia, at the east end of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Things to do around Bean Station
Cherokee Lake drives most of the recreation. Bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish are common targets, and public ramps at Panther Creek and Cherokee Dam make it easy to launch a boat, kayak, or paddleboard. Swim beaches and day-use areas at both parks work well for families with younger kids.
On land, Panther Creek State Park has the deepest trail network in the immediate area, with more than 30 miles of trail suitable for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, plus a disc golf course, tennis and basketball courts, and a seasonal swimming pool.
For day trips, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park lies to the northeast, with over 85 miles of hiking trails and 70-plus miles of backcountry horse trails accessible from Rock Bottom Horse Camp. The Great Smoky Mountains sit roughly an hour south, putting Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Foothills Parkway within reach.

How to book campsites near Bean Station
Reservation systems vary by operator. Panther Creek State Park takes reservations online through the Tennessee State Parks website at reserve.tnstateparks.com, with a booking window up to one year in advance. Popular summer weekends can fill weeks or months out, especially for the sites with sewer hookups.
TVA campgrounds, including Cherokee Dam, are managed by Vista Recreation under a concessionaire agreement with TVA, which added an online reservation system, campground stores, and wireless access. Cherokee Dam Campground takes reservations through that system during its March-to-November season. During the high season, stays are limited to 21 days, and during the off-season, stays are limited to a maximum of 30 days.
Private options like Greenlees Fall Creek Campground and Mammoth Ridge RV Park are booked directly with the operator. Rock Bottom Horse Camp takes reservations through its own website.
What to expect on the ground

Panther Creek has 50 campsites with water and 20, 30, 50-amp electrical hookups, grills, picnic tables, and fire rings; eight sites have sewer hookups, and there are two bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms plus a year-round laundromat and a dump station. Cherokee Dam Campground has 44 sites, and with the exception of 5 primitive sites, all sites have electrical and water hookups, with 4 sites meeting ADA guidelines. Nearly every campsite has a view of the lake and mountains, and entry roads are paved with mostly level gravel parking pads.
Cell coverage is generally usable near Morristown and Jefferson City but drops off on back roads. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply runs are easiest in Morristown.
