Campgrounds and RV parks near Biltmore, TN

Water recreation drives most trips. Outdoor recreation in the area includes boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The tailwater below Watauga Dam is a well-known trout fishery, and Watauga Lake offers boat ramps and swim areas. Hiking is the other main draw. The Appalachian Trail crosses close to Watauga Dam Campground, and Roan Mountain State Park sits at the base of 6,285-foot Roan Mountain across more than 2,000 acres of hardwood forest, with the cool, clear Doe River winding through the center of the park and supporting a healthy population of trout. Rhododendron blooms peak in mid-June and are a signature draw. Families can mix in Miller Farmstead tours, waterfall hikes on Laurel Fork Creek, and scenic drives up to Carvers Gap on the Roan Highlands.

The camping season in this corner of Tennessee is shaped by elevation and by how public land agencies manage water systems in freezing weather. Many campgrounds and swim areas within the Cherokee National Forest close from late fall through mid spring, in response to low visitation, reduced seasonal workforce, and freezing temperatures that damage water and wastewater systems. TVA campgrounds, including Watauga Dam, are available from March 15 to November 15. Spring brings wildflowers, high water on the rivers, and the rhododendron push that peaks in June around Roan Mountain. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, humid afternoons, and reliable thunderstorms. Johnson City is prone to thunderstorms in the spring and early summer months. Fall delivers the strongest color and the driest weather of the year. Roan Mountain State Park and Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area experienced significant damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024, and portions of the park remain closed to the public for safety, so verify specific loops and trails before booking.

Sites in this area lean toward wooded, sloping, and creek- or river-adjacent. Campsites at Watauga Dam can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs, with up to 3 vehicles and 8 people allowed per site, and each site has a table, fire ring and grill, with campground amenities including drinking water, flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. Connectivity is inconsistent in the river gorges. Cell service is fair in the area around Watauga Dam, and campers should expect weaker signal deeper into the Cherokee National Forest. This is bear country, and bears have been seen in the area, so carrying bear spray is strongly recommended, and food should be stored in vehicles or bear-resistant containers. Roads to some mountain campgrounds are narrow and steep, so big rigs should call ahead to confirm access. Tennessee State Parks asks that all campfires be made with heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park, near the campsite.
