West Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate with warm, wet springs and hot, humid summers. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year and frequent thunderstorms, so RV travelers should watch severe-weather forecasts from March through May and expect soft ground at bottomland sites.
Summer is peak booking season at the state parks. Bugs are a real factor at the bluff and bottomland parks, so mosquito repellent and long sleeves at dusk are worth packing. Fall cools through October and November and is generally the most pleasant window for touring the bluffs and river overlooks.
Most campgrounds in the area operate year-round. Meeman-Shelby Forest is open year-round with reservations available up to one year in advance, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights, extended to 28 nights December 1 through February. Winter stays are quieter but colder, with occasional ice and rare snow.
How to book
State-park sites in the area are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks central reservation system. Advanced reservations may be made up to 1 year in advance, and there is a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite that supports the reservation system. The central reservations line is 1 (888) 867-2757.
Fort Pillow has a small inventory, so weekends fill early. Maximum stay for camping is 14 days, extended to 28 days December 1 to February 28/29. Private parks like Agricenter, Cook's Lake, and Serendipity Brownsville are booked directly with each property by phone or through their websites. Call ahead for big-rig site availability and long-stay rules.
What to expect on-site
Hookups vary by property. The north side of Fort Pillow's Family Campground has campsites that can accommodate RVs and campers with 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical and water hookups, and sites vary in length with some accommodating rigs up to 60 feet. The campground has a dump station, a dumpster, recycling bins, and a spot for gray and black water at the campground entrance. Meeman-Shelby Forest's Dogwood Ridge Campground has 49 sites with water and electric hookups, and each site has a table, fire ring and grill.
Agricenter is an East Memphis park with three hundred sites, water, 30 and 50-amp service, sewer hookups, a dump station, laundry and shower facilities, and easy access from I-40 and I-240. Bring certified heat-treated firewood, which is required in Tennessee state parks.
