Campgrounds and RV parks near Caryville, TN

Off-highway-vehicle riding is the headline activity. The North Cumberland WMA carries hundreds of miles of trails accessible from Royal Blue RV Park and Ride Royal Blue ATV park, ranging from beginner gravel roads to advanced technical routes. A TWRA permit is required to ride the WMA trails and can be purchased online. Water-based activity centers on Norris Lake and Cove Lake. Anglers target bass and crappie, and paddlers use Cove Lake's calmer waters for kayaking and wildlife viewing. Due to dangerous conditions within the lake, Cove Lake is not suitable for swimming. Hikers can pick up an 11-mile section of the Cumberland Trail, Tennessee's first linear state park, which connects Cove Lake State Park with Tank Springs in LaFollette, and West - Norris Dam State Park offers additional lakeview and ridge trails, along with historic CCC-era structures.

Late spring through early fall is the busiest window. Warm days, long daylight, and drier trails make May through October the peak stretch for RV travel, lake activity, and ATV riding. Weekends in summer and during fall color in mid to late October fill fastest at the private parks, so booking several weeks ahead is realistic. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and heavier rainfall. Trails can be muddy after storms, and Tennessee experiences a relatively high number of tornadoes, averaging approximately 21 tornadoes per year, and while tornadoes can occur in any month, they tend to peak in the spring, so travelers should monitor forecasts. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall is often the most comfortable season for camping, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong hardwood color across the Cumberlands. Winter is quiet: some private parks stay open for OHV riders year-round, while state-park campgrounds may operate on reduced services. The Cove Lake Campground is currently closed through 2026 due to a renovation project, and the East and West Campgrounds at Norris Dam are currently closed for renovation with an intended reopening in 2026, so verify status before planning a trip.

State-park sites at Cove Lake and West - Norris Dam State Park typically offer paved or gravel pads with water and electric hookups, picnic tables, grills, and access to modern bathhouses with hot showers. A dump station is located at each campground at Norris Dam, and a bathhouse is centrally located in each campground and is open year-round. Mature hardwoods provide shade on most loops. Private parks in the area lean toward full hookups on gravel pads, with 30 and 50 amp service and ATV wash bays common at the trail-focused properties. Kountry Kritters Campground offers RV sites alongside primitive options, plus family-friendly amenities. Cove Lake State Park has reliable cell service throughout its grounds, though coverage thins deeper in the WMA. Expect narrow, curvy access roads at Norris Dam, and plan for wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
