Camping near Dickson, Tennessee
Dickson sits in Middle Tennessee about 40 minutes west of downtown Nashville along the I-40 corridor, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want forested state-park terrain within reach of the Nashville metro. Montgomery Bell State Park is located in Middle Tennessee, about 40 minutes west of downtown Nashville, and features forested landscapes and three lakes that support a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the year. The park anchors the local camping scene inside a sprawling 3,850-acre footprint of rolling hills, lakes, and lush forests.
RV renters have a mix of public and private options within a short drive. Montgomery Bell State Park is the closest public campground. Tanbark Campground sits about 9 miles south of Dickson and 45 miles west of Nashville, conveniently located just off Interstate 40. Piney River Resort and the related Piney River RV Resort operate along the Piney River near Bon Aqua, and Hidden Haven offers cabins and RV sites in the surrounding countryside.
Important planning note: the Campground at Montgomery Bell, also called the Four Mile Creek Campground, is currently closed for renovations, and Central Reservations can be reached at 1 (888) 867-2757. Confirm status before building an itinerary around the state park itself.
Things to do around Dickson
Montgomery Bell State Park drives most of the outdoor activity. The park features forested landscapes and three lakes that support a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, and paddling. Around 23 miles of dirt mountain bike trails run through the thickly forested hills, and hiking trails include a 10-mile overnight route. Swim access at Lake Acorn is a warm-weather draw.
Water time is the draw at the Piney River properties. Piney River Resort sits on the banks of the Piney River, about 50 miles from downtown Nashville and just a few miles from the Johnny Cash farm and museum, with kayaking, swimming, and fishing on site.
Day trips are easy from Dickson: downtown Nashville is roughly an hour east on I-40, and nearby wineries and the rolling hills of the Highland Rim make good afternoon detours from any of the local campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. Spring brings green forest cover and wildflowers, though it is also the wettest stretch of the year, with active thunderstorm patterns across Middle Tennessee. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Highland Rim, and weekends fill quickly at both state and private parks.
Summer is peak season for family bookings, but it is hot and humid. Summers in Dickson are hot and muggy, and winters are very cold and wet. Plan for shaded sites, full hookups with 30- or 50-amp service for air conditioning, and early-morning trail starts.
Winter is quieter. The Montgomery Bell campground is normally open year-round and provides 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric service, with many sites including water and onsite sewer, though the current renovation closure changes that. Private parks like Piney River Resort and Tanbark generally remain open through winter, with reduced amenities during cold snaps.

The owner is fantastic. Walked me through everything, knowing I was new at pulling a camper. Told me to contact him at any time, which I did. The camper was great. It fit two adults, and 2 children. The camper comes with a coffee maker, a french press, silverware, plateware, cups and mugs, dish towels, trash bags, and more. It was very a comfortable space for our trip. I'll definitely work with the owner for our next trip.

Excellent experience for a first time renter. All my questions regarding the rental were answered promptly by the owner. The unit was delivered and set-up as planned with no problems. It arrived in excellent condition (practically new) and was exceptionally clean. We could not have been more pleased with this experience and look forward to working with the owner again.

How to book campgrounds near Dickson
State-park sites are booked through Tennessee State Parks. Reservations for Montgomery Bell should be made well in advance, especially for peak seasons because of its proximity to Nashville, and reservations can be made through the Tennessee State Parks website or by calling the park office directly. Booking can be done online or by phone up to one year in advance, and summer weekends tend to get fully booked out, so reserve ahead.
Private parks use their own systems. Piney River Resort and Piney River RV Resort book through their website or Campspot, Hidden Haven takes reservations through its site, and Tanbark Campground is cash or check only, so call ahead to confirm a site. Piney River RV Resort is open all year and accepts big rigs, with pull-thrus and 20, 30, and 50 amp service.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean toward wooded, rolling terrain rather than open desert-style pads. At Montgomery Bell when open, the campground provides 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric service with many sites including water and onsite sewer, most electrical sites can accommodate 60-foot campers, and there are three bathhouses with picnic tables, trash cans, and grills at each campsite. Camping rates are for up to six persons per campsite, with exceptions made for immediate family, and larger groups should reserve additional sites.
At Tanbark, 38 paved, full-hookup campsites are big-rig friendly for RVs up to 60 feet, and many are pull-through accessible. At the Piney River properties, amenities include broadband WiFi, individual fire pits and rings, all sites are full hookup, and some Super Premium Sites have concrete pads and patios. Cell coverage on the back roads into Piney River can be spotty, so download directions before turning off I-40.
