Campgrounds and RV parks near Elizabethton, TN

Watauga Lake is the centerpiece for on-water recreation, with boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and trout fishing on the Watauga River tailwater below the dam. The boat ramp near Watauga Dam Campground provides quick lake access, and the overlook above the campground gives long views of the lake and surrounding ridges. Hikers have direct access to the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the mountains a few miles from the dam. The Laurel Fork Falls hike out of Dennis Cove near Hampton is a popular half-day trip, and Roan Mountain State Park adds rhododendron gardens, the Doe River, and access to the 6,285-foot summit of Roan Mountain. In town, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park covers the site of the 1772 Watauga Association and hosts living-history events through the warmer months.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season around Elizabethton. Watauga Dam Campground and the other TVA reservoir campgrounds operate from March 15 through November 15, while Roan Mountain State Park's campground is generally closed from November through mid-April. Mid-June brings the rhododendron bloom in the Roan Highlands, which draws heavy weekend traffic and fills state park sites quickly. Summer is warm and humid in the valleys but noticeably cooler at elevation, making Roan Mountain and the higher trails comfortable when Elizabethton itself is in the mid-80s. July is typically the wettest month, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can affect river levels and trail conditions. Fall brings peak leaf color from mid-October into early November and is the second busiest booking window. Winter camping is limited, with some private parks and state park cabins operating year-round while most riverside and lake campgrounds close. Storm damage from Hurricane Helene has also affected access at Roan Mountain State Park, including the upper campground loops, so verify current closures before booking.

Expect mountain-camping realities: narrow approach roads with switchbacks in some coves, uneven terrain, and mixed cell coverage. Verizon and AT&T generally perform better than other carriers at ridge-top locations, while valley and lakeside sites can drop to zero bars. Cell service at Watauga Dam Campground is essentially nonexistent in the campground itself, with a short drive up to the overlook needed for a usable signal. Hookup levels vary widely. Watauga Dam has 29 sites, all with water and electric and only two with full hookups, so plan on a trip through the dump station before departure. Private resorts more commonly offer full hookups, while state park loops typically provide electric and water only. Bears are active in the region, so store food, coolers, and scented items inside the RV. Tennessee State Parks require heat-treated or locally sourced firewood to prevent invasive pest spread.
