Campgrounds and RV parks near Halls, TN

Norris Lake is the dominant outdoor draw north of Halls, with boat ramps, swim beaches, and marinas within roughly thirty minutes of most area campgrounds. Anglers target bass, walleye, and crappie, while paddlers use the calmer coves off Big Ridge and Hickory Star. Big Ridge State Park offers a campground with sites for tents and RVs with water and electric hookups, plus three hike-in backcountry campsites along the trail system. Downtown Knoxville, about twenty minutes south, offers World's Fair Park, the Sunsphere, riverfront greenways, and the University of Tennessee campus. Families often pair a campground stay with day trips to Zoo Knoxville, the Museum of East Tennessee History, or the ridgetop overlooks along House Mountain State Natural Area east of Halls.

Peak camping season in the Halls area runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Norris Lake temperatures warm enough for swimming and Big Ridge's beach and boat rentals are in full operation. Weekends at state park campgrounds fill quickly during this window, and holiday weekends often book out months in advance. Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons and generally offer the best mix of moderate weather and site availability. Fall foliage across the Cumberland ridges typically peaks in mid to late October, drawing weekend traffic to Big Ridge and the surrounding lake camps. Spring brings wildflower blooms and higher rainfall, so waterfront and low-lying sites can be muddy. Winter camping is limited but possible. The Big Ridge campground stays open year-round, though bathhouses close from November through March with one restroom kept accessible during winter. All Big Ridge State Park cabins are currently closed for renovations and are expected to reopen in late fall 2026. Many private RV parks in the area stay open year-round with reduced amenities.

RV sites in the Halls area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks near the interstate to more rustic state park loops with water and electric only. At Tennessee State Parks RV campgrounds, only one wheeled camper is allowed per site, and camping rates are for up to six persons per campsite with exceptions made for immediate family. Expect wooded, rolling terrain with some tight turns on secondary roads leading to lake campgrounds. Big Ridge RV campsites have a paved slip and a soft gravel pad and can accommodate a unit up to 35 feet, with some sites able to accommodate 45 feet, so larger rigs should confirm site length before booking. Bear precautions are recommended when backcountry camping, and food storage rules apply at state park sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Halls and Knoxville but can drop in the ridge and cove areas around Norris Lake.
