Campgrounds near Kenton, Tennessee
Kenton is a small town in northwest Tennessee straddling Gibson and Obion counties, well positioned for RV travelers heading to Reelfoot Lake and the surrounding farmland of the upper Mississippi River basin. The area is flat, mostly agricultural, and easy to tow through, with paved county roads connecting Kenton to Union City, Tiptonville, and the state park to the northwest.
Most RV travelers basing near Kenton stay at private parks close to town or at the two Tennessee State Parks campgrounds on Reelfoot Lake. Coyote View RV Park and RV Repair and Union City RV Park offer full-hookup convenience near town services, while South - Reelfoot Lake State Park and Airpark North - Reelfoot Lake State Park sit directly on the lake for anglers and wildlife watchers. Sportsmans Resort adds another lakeside option focused on fishing.
The region is best known for its shallow cypress lake, famous for its partially submerged cypress forest, water lilies, and fishing for crappie, bluegill, bass, and catfish, making it a practical mix of nature access and small-town amenities for families in a rental RV.
Things to do near Kenton
Reelfoot Lake is the main draw. The lake was created by the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 and is famous for its partially submerged cypress forest, water lilies, and strong fishing for crappie, bluegill, bass, and catfish. Boat launching ramps and a fish cleaning house with electricity and water are maintained in the park, and canoes and kayaks can be rented locally.
Wildlife viewing is a year-round activity. Bald eagles nest in the park and eagle tours are available during winter months, with rangers running guided bus tours that depart from the visitor center. Five easy hiking trails range from a half-mile to two miles in length and are popular for watching birds, including golden and American bald eagles. A raptor exhibit at the visitor center and interpretive programs during summer round out family options. In town, Kenton is known locally as the home of the white squirrel.

Spring is the busiest camping window. The larger South Campground is the most popular of the two sites and gets extremely busy in April and May, and these are among the wetter months of the year, so early reservations matter. Wildflowers return, songbirds are active, and crappie fishing peaks.
Summer brings hot, humid weather with highs commonly in the upper 80s Fahrenheit. Water lilies bloom in mid-summer, interpretive programs run at the park, and thunderstorms are frequent but usually brief. Insects are active near the lake, so screens and repellent are worth packing.
Fall cools through October and November, with fall color in the cypress and hardwoods. Winter is the signature season for wildlife: bald eagles and waterfowl move onto the lake, and guided eagle tours run in January and February. The campgrounds are open year-round.
How to book
The two state park campgrounds, South - Reelfoot Lake State Park and Airpark North - Reelfoot Lake State Park, are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks system online or by phone. Advanced reservations may be made up to 1 year in advance, and there is a non-refundable $5.00 Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite. Reservations may be cancelled up to and including 2 days prior to the scheduled arrival.
Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 12:00 pm, with quiet hours from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. Private options such as Coyote View RV Park and RV Repair, Union City RV Park, and Sportsmans Resort are booked directly with each property. For eagle tours and other ranger programs, reservations are strongly recommended because tours frequently sell out.
What to expect
South Campground offers 86 paved campsites, all equipped with 20/30/50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups. Three bathhouses serve the campground, two with hot showers and one featuring laundry facilities and a dishwashing area. A dump station is located at the entrance. The smaller Airpark North Campground provides 14 RV sites accommodating rigs up to 35 feet with 30-amp electric and water hookups, plus 10 primitive tent-only sites, served by a bathhouse with hot showers.
Sewer hookups on-site are limited at the state park, so plan on using the dump station. Roads in and around Kenton and Tiptonville are paved and mostly flat, which makes towing straightforward. The shallow lake offers boating and fishing, but swimming is not permitted.
