Campgrounds near Maynardville
Maynardville sits in Union County, Tennessee, just north of Knoxville and along the Norris Lake watershed. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers because most nearby campgrounds cluster along the shoreline of Norris Reservoir, a Tennessee Valley Authority lake designated as one of the cleanest in the TVA system.
Options range from state-park camping to private lakeside resorts and rural farm stays. Big Ridge State Park, operated by Tennessee State Parks, offers developed RV and tent sites plus three designated backcountry hike-in campsites. Loyston Point Campground, run by a TVA concessionaire, provides lakefront sites, most with electric hookups. Hickory Star Campground and Mountain View Campground Speedwell serve travelers who want private-park amenities near the water, while Yeary Valley Farms offers a quieter agricultural setting.
Most sites are within a short drive of Maynardville, and many are on or near Norris Lake, so boating, fishing, and swimming access is a common draw across the area.
Things to do near Maynardville
Norris Lake anchors most trip plans. Boating, bass fishing, swimming, and paddling dominate summer schedules, and marina access is available at multiple points around the reservoir. Hickory Star operates a full-service marina with boat rentals, slip rentals, a swimming pool, and a seasonal on-site restaurant.
On land, Big Ridge State Park has over 15 miles of hiking trails and three designated backcountry campsites: Dark Hollow West, a 2-mile moderate hike; Dark Hollow East, a 4-mile moderate hike; and Sharps Station, a 4-mile difficult hike recommended for experienced hikers only. Loyston Point provides access to the Hemlock Bluff National Recreation Trail, which follows the steep ridges above the reservoir, plus an ADA-compliant swimming beach and kayak, paddleboard, canoe, and paddleboat rentals.

December - February
48° / 32°F 105 mmMild days, frosty nights; limited winter cabin inventory
The area follows a humid subtropical pattern. Summers are hot and busy: Norris Lake marinas and campgrounds see peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and waterfront demand is heaviest on holiday weekends. Weekends at Hickory Star fill quickly, and reservations for lakefront sites should be locked in well ahead.
Spring brings wildflowers and steady rainfall, with several of the wettest months of the year falling in this window. Trails at Big Ridge come alive with blooms, but campers should plan for muddy conditions and occasional severe-thunderstorm days.
Fall is generally drier, with cooler nights and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is mild by northern standards but cold enough that some park amenities scale back. Big Ridge State Park cabins are currently closed for renovations and are expected to reopen in late fall of the current renovation cycle, and during winter only a limited group of cabins is offered for reservation.

How to book campgrounds near Maynardville
Reservation systems vary by operator. Big Ridge State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks reservation system, with campsites reservable up to one year in advance and a non-refundable advanced reservation fee per campsite. Cancellations up to and including two days prior to arrival receive a refund of campground fees minus that reservation fee.
Loyston Point Campground is managed by a TVA concessionaire and booked through its online reservation portal. A two-night minimum stay is required, campers must be 18 or older to hold a reservation, and camping is permitted only at designated numbered sites. Cabin renters must be 21 or older.
Private operators such as Hickory Star handle bookings directly by phone. For summer holiday weekends, booking several months out is prudent across all local campgrounds.
What to expect on-site
Expect rolling, wooded terrain, narrow campground roads in places, and spotty cell coverage close to the lake. At Loyston Point, 59 of the 64 campsites have electric hookups, most sites have a lake view or waterfront position, and the campground provides restrooms with heated showers, flush toilets, and a fill and dump station. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring and grill combo.
Hickory Star sits on privately owned land, free from TVA length-of-stay restrictions, which allows a mix of nightly, monthly, and annual RV site rentals. The campground includes a bath house and laundromat, and its RV sites are advertised with electric, water, sewer, and cable hookups.
Pets are welcome at Loyston Point when leashed, though not on the beach, in restrooms, or in the store, while Hickory Star does not allow pets in its motel or campground. Campfires are restricted to established fire rings across the area.

Big Ridge State Park on Big Ridge Park Road allows leashed pets on most trails and at the campground, and the shaded coves along Norris Lake are perfect for a tired-out dog after a swim. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees or any breed and size notes. Pro tip: bring a long lead and a towel, because that red Tennessee clay sticks to wet paws.

Yes, RV delivery Maynardville is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it's a game-changer if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drive the rig to Big Ridge State Park, Lost Creek RV Park, Sunset Cove, or even a lakeside cabin rental, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts who offer this service and their delivery radius. Delivery fees vary by distance but typically run $2-$4 per mile. Pro tip: pair delivery with a lakefront site at Big Ridge and you'll never touch the steering wheel, just step in and start vacationing.

You're spoiled for choice. Lost Creek RV Park offers 120 full-hookup sites with 1,300 feet of Norris Lake shoreline and a boat launch. Sunset Cove RV Park gives you Appalachian Mountain views and easy lake access. For a more resort feel, Beach Island Resort & Marina has lakeside RV sites with marina, restaurant, and pool access. Loyston Point Campground rounds out the list with 64 sites (59 electric) managed by TVA. Pro tip: state-park and TVA sites release on a rolling 11-month window, so book early for summer.
tnstateparks.com/parks/campground/big-ridgeWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Maynardville?
Late April through October is the sweet spot for RV camping Maynardville, with the absolute peak being May, June, September, and early October. Summer highs sit around 85-87°F with warm Norris Lake water perfect for swimming and tubing, while fall brings cool 60-70°F days and the Smokies' world-famous color show in mid-to-late October. Spring wildflowers at Big Ridge State Park peak in April. Winters are short but chilly (highs in the upper 40s, lows near 29°F), and many lakeside campgrounds close December through March. For the best balance of weather, low crowds, and pricing, aim for the second half of September. Pro tip: book fall-color weekends 4-6 months ahead, they're the most competitive dates of the year.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, and Maynardville is actually a friendly place to learn. First time renting an RV here? Your host will walk you through every system at pickup, including water, propane, slide-outs, generator, and dumping tanks, and you can ask as many questions as you want. The roads around Norris Lake are mostly two-lane country highways with light traffic outside of summer weekends, so you'll get comfortable fast. Start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer, which drive much like a large truck. If city driving worries you, request delivery so you skip the pickup stress entirely. Pro tip: take 15 minutes to practice in an empty parking lot near Maynardville High School before heading to your campground.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services/dlhandbook.htmlWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Don't sweat it, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking. If you get a flat tire on Highway 33, lose power at Big Ridge, or run into mechanical trouble on the way to the Smokies, you call one number and help is dispatched. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip if you need to coordinate anything with your host. The closest full-service RV repair shops are in Knoxville (about 30 minutes south), and several mobile RV techs serve the Norris Lake area. Pro tip: snap photos of every system during your walkthrough, it makes troubleshooting over the phone way faster if something goes sideways.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Maynardville?
You're sitting at the doorstep of some legendary drives. A classic RV road trip from Maynardville is the 55-mile run to Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the most visited national park in the U.S.), where you can camp at Elkmont or Cades Cove. Drive about 50 miles to Pigeon Forge and Dollywood for a family weekend, or head roughly 60 miles north through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park into Kentucky and Virginia. Nashville is about 200 miles west on I-40 for a music-and-BBQ run. Closer to home, loop sections of Norris Lake's 800 miles of shoreline through Andersonville, LaFollette, and Sharps Chapel. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but most U.S. routes from Tennessee are fair game. Pro tip: time your Smokies trip to drive Newfound Gap Road at sunrise for empty roads and misty valley views.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Maynardville RV trip?
Tennessee has some of the cheapest gas in the country, which makes your fuel budget refreshingly predictable. Most Class C motorhomes get 8-12 mpg, travel trailers reduce your tow vehicle to 10-14 mpg, and campervans can hit 18-22 mpg. With Tennessee pump prices typically running below the national average, a 200-mile weekend loop around Norris Lake and the Smokies usually costs $60-$100 in fuel for most rigs. Fill up in Maynardville or Halls (south of town on Highway 33) where prices tend to be a few cents cheaper than at the interstate exits. Pro tip: download GasBuddy before your trip and avoid the pricey Pilot at I-75 Exit 122 unless you're already getting groceries there.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Maynardville?
For summer weekends and fall-color weeks, book 3-6 months out, especially at Big Ridge State Park, which is the top campground in the area and takes reservations through ReserveTNStateParks.com. TVA-managed campgrounds in the Norris Lake area book through Recreation.gov and fill up just as fast. Marina campgrounds like Beach Island and Norris Landing take reservations directly through their websites. Weekday stays at private parks like Lost Creek and Sunset Cove often have last-minute openings, even in July. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for your target Big Ridge date the moment reservations open and book first thing in the morning, the lakefront sites disappear quickly.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhat are the driving conditions like around Maynardville?
Mostly easy, with a few things to know. Highway 33 is the main route through Maynardville and is a well-maintained two-lane road with gentle curves, perfect for first-time RVers. I-75 is just 20 miles west for fast highway travel. The roads down to Norris Lake marinas can be narrow, winding, and steep in spots, so take it slow if you're towing a fifth wheel or driving a longer Class A. Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll through East Tennessee fast, so pull over if visibility drops. Winter ice is occasional but real, particularly on bridges. Pro tip: avoid driving the Norris Freeway (Highway 441 through Norris) during weekday rush hour, take Maynardville Highway instead for a quieter, more scenic route.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/check-current-road-conditions-and-closures.htmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Maynardville offer?
You'll find excellent infrastructure for your motorhome rental Maynardville trip. Big Ridge State Park offers water and electric hookups (some 50-amp), a dump station, bathhouses with hot showers, and laundry. Lost Creek RV Park has full hookups (water, sewer, electric) at every site plus a boat ramp. Sunset Cove and Beach Island Resort include full hookups with marina access. Most lakeside parks have potable water fill stations near the entrance, and dump stations are typically free for registered campers (or $5-$10 for drop-ins). Cell service is solid in town and at Big Ridge but spotty in some Norris Lake coves. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank in Maynardville before heading to your campsite so you're never caught short.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhat should I expect inside my Maynardville RV rental?
More comfort than you'd think. Most RVs listed in the Maynardville area come fully stocked with real beds (queen and bunk options are common), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and furnace, a TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include outdoor amenities like awnings and camp chairs. Wi-Fi and generators are common on larger rigs, and a few hosts include kayaks or paddleboards perfect for Norris Lake. Each listing has a full amenities list, and you can filter by sleeps count to match your group size. Pro tip: message the host to confirm linens, towels, and basic kitchen gear are included, most provide them, but it's good to know before you pack.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options are available?
Most hosts around Maynardville offer add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include generator usage, kayaks and SUPs for Norris Lake, bike racks, outdoor grills, fishing gear, linen packages, and dump-and-clean service so you don't deal with tanks at the end. Delivery and setup is one of the most popular add-ons and pricing varies by host and distance. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Maynardville, with orientation walkthroughs taking 30-45 minutes. Mileage policies are listed on every listing, typically 100-150 free miles per day with a per-mile overage fee set by the host. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a dump-service add-on and you'll basically have a luxury vacation, just show up and enjoy the lake.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after your trip ends, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues, do a detailed walkthrough with your host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, and any existing scratches or dings, and follow the dump and cleaning instructions. Pro tip: keep all gas, dump-station, and toll receipts in one envelope, it makes settling any mileage or fuel charges painless.
