Camping near Millington, Tennessee
Millington sits in Shelby County, about 20 miles north of downtown Memphis, and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the lower Mississippi River corridor. The area combines bluff-top state parks along the river with full-hookup private RV parks closer to the Memphis metro, giving families a mix of rustic and urban options within a short drive.
The closest public option is Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, a large forested park just west of Millington on the Chickasaw Bluffs. Fort Pillow State Park lies about an hour north and preserves a Civil War river fortification with a small family campground. Cook's Lake RV Resort and Campground and Agricenter RV Park cover the private-park side, both with full hookups and Memphis-area access.
For visitors wanting proximity to city attractions such as Graceland, Beale Street, or the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground sits within walking distance of the Graceland complex. Together the five parks cover most RV needs, from riverfront hardwood forest to paved urban sites.
Things to do around Millington
Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is the primary outdoor draw, with over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails through cypress swamps and hardwood forests, plus fishing and boat rentals at Poplar Tree Lake. Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, with sightings that can include bald eagles, songbirds, deer, turkey, beaver, fox, otter, and bobcats. The bluffs also offer Mississippi River overlooks.
Fort Pillow State Park focuses on Civil War history and river views, with interpretive trails around the earthworks and a stocked lake. The park is now designated a Wildlife Observation Area and is popular for birdwatching, hiking, and boating.
In the Memphis metro, families can pair camping with visits to Graceland, the Memphis Zoo, the Children's Museum, Shelby Farms Park, and the barbecue and blues venues downtown. The Agricenter grounds host farmers markets, seasonal events, and equestrian shows.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Millington. Temperatures are mild, foliage is active, and campground demand is manageable outside of holiday weekends. Spring can bring severe thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches, so travelers should monitor NWS Memphis alerts and choose sites with awareness of drainage and tree cover.
Summers are hot and humid, with heat indices frequently pushing into the upper 90s. Mosquito pressure at Meeman-Shelby is notable given the bottomland hardwood setting near the Mississippi, so warm-weather visitors should pack strong repellent and plan for buggy dusks. State park sites for summer weekends should be booked early.
Winter is the quietest season. State park campgrounds remain open, and the maximum stay is extended to 28 days from December 1 through February 28/29, which suits snowbird stopovers. Freezing nights occur but hard freezes are typically brief.
How to book campgrounds near Millington
Tennessee State Parks handle Meeman-Shelby Forest and Fort Pillow bookings through a single online system. Advanced reservations may be made up to 1 year in advance, and a non-refundable $5.00 advanced reservation fee applies per campsite. Cancellation windows are strict, so confirm dates before booking.
Private parks use their own systems. Agricenter RV Park takes reservations directly through Agricenter International by phone and inquiry form. Cook's Lake RV Resort and Campground and Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground accept online and phone bookings, with the Graceland park often filling around major Elvis-related events in January and August.
For peak spring and fall weekends, aim to reserve state park sites two to three months out. ADA-accessible sites at Fort Pillow are limited and should be requested well in advance.
What to expect on-site
State park campgrounds in this area lean rustic but functional. Meeman-Shelby provides 49 sites with electric and water hookups, several sites include full sewer connections, each site has a picnic table, grill, and fire ring, a modern bathhouse offers hot showers and flush toilets, and a dump station serves RVs without sewer hookups.
Fort Pillow's family campground is smaller and tent-oriented but does accommodate RVs. The family campground has fifteen campsites that accommodate RVs and campers with 20, 30, 50-amp electrical and water hookups, and some sites can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. A dump station and dumpster sit at the entrance to the campground.
Private parks near Memphis offer full hookups, laundry, and paved or gravel pads. Sites can be tight at Agricenter during events, so larger rigs should confirm site length before arrival.
