RV camping near New Market, Tennessee
New Market sits in Jefferson County in East Tennessee, roughly between Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains. The town is bracketed by two major TVA reservoirs, Cherokee Lake to the north and Douglas Lake to the south, which shape most of the RV camping options in the area. Interstate 40 and Highway 11E provide straightforward access for travelers arriving from Knoxville, Asheville, or the Tri-Cities.
Closest to town, Cherokee Dam Campground and Douglas Tailwater Campground are TVA-managed properties offering lakefront and riverfront sites with water and electric hookups. Private options in the area include Dumplin Valley RV, Anchor Down RV Resort on Douglas Lake, and Mountain Lake Ranch Christian Retreat, which round out the mix for renters who want full hookups or resort amenities.
The area works well as a base camp for Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park while avoiding the higher rates and traffic of the tourist corridor.
Things to do near New Market
Water recreation dominates. Douglas Lake offers multiple boat ramps and access to some of the Tennessee Valley's best bass fishing, and Cherokee Lake is known for striper, crappie, and largemouth bass. Both reservoirs support swimming, kayaking, pontoon rentals, and waterskiing through the warm months.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the primary day-trip draw. Douglas Tailwater Campground sits roughly 20 miles from Pigeon Forge and 30 miles from Gatlinburg, putting Cades Cove, Newfound Gap, and Clingmans Dome within reach. Closer to camp, families can visit Bush's Beans Visitor Center in Chestnut Hill, the historic downtowns of Jefferson City and Dandridge, and pick-your-own orchards during late summer and fall.

The core RV season in this part of East Tennessee runs mid-spring through mid-fall. TVA-owned campgrounds, including Cherokee Dam Campground and Douglas Tailwater Campground, operate from March 15 to November 15 each year. Private parks such as Anchor Down RV Resort and Dumplin Valley RV typically stay open year-round but shift to reduced services in winter.
Summer brings the biggest crowds, warmest lake temperatures, and highest demand near the Smokies. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with cooler nights and comfortable daytime hiking weather. October is the peak leaf-peeping window in the surrounding foothills, and reservations at Smokies-adjacent parks tend to book up well in advance.
Flood risk is a real factor. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the French Broad River eroded banks at Douglas Tailwater Campground and repairs continued through the following winter, so check current operating status directly with the campground before shoulder-season trips.

How to book campgrounds in the area
TVA-owned campgrounds, including Cherokee Dam Campground and Douglas Tailwater Campground, are managed by Vista Recreation under a concessionaire agreement, and reservations are made through the Vista Recreation website or by phone. Popular waterfront sites at these properties book fastest for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and each site carries a two-night minimum.
Private parks such as Anchor Down RV Resort, Dumplin Valley RV, and Mountain Lake Ranch Christian Retreat handle bookings on their own websites or by phone. Anchor Down accepts reservations up to two years in advance and fills holiday weekends far ahead. For flexibility, midweek arrivals and shoulder-season dates open up significantly more inventory across both TVA and private parks.
What to expect on site
TVA campgrounds in the New Market area are developed but rustic in feel. Douglas Tailwater Campground has 61 campsites, most with electric and water, two bathhouses with warm showers and flush toilets, a paved entry road, and graveled sites with picnic table and fire pit or grill combo. Cherokee Dam Campground has 44 sites in a similar layout, with most offering electric and water and views of the lake.
Full-hookup sewer connections are more common at private resorts than at TVA properties, so renters planning longer stays may prefer Anchor Down RV Resort or Dumplin Valley RV if a dump-station-only setup is a concern. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the reservoirs but can drop in the ridge-and-valley terrain between them. Bring leveling blocks: many riverfront and lakefront pads have noticeable slope toward the water.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in New Market, TN?
RV rental in New Market, TN is affordable compared to coastal hubs. Travel trailers typically start around $95 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs range from roughly $250 to $450. Hosts in nearby Jefferson City and Dandridge often price below Knoxville-metro listings for comparable rigs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Market%2C%20TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New Market, TN?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Market, TN. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, including larger Class A rigs. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform when you book, so there is no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters heading to the Smokies are surprised how quickly the booking process moves.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included with my New Market RV rental?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. Protection plans cover physical damage to the RV at different coverage levels, and the guest chooses the tier at checkout (not the host), so you can match the coverage to your comfort level and trip length. This is especially reassuring for a Smoky Mountains RV trip from New Market, where mountain roads and Tennessee thunderstorms can make first-timers nervous. Lock in your tier at booking and you can hit I-40 with real peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New Market RV trip?
Booking feels low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and the terms tied to your specific booking are shown during checkout and on your confirmation. Depending on how far out your trip is and the circumstances, you may be eligible for a full or partial refund. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your payment or helps you rebook. East Tennessee weather around New Market can shift fast in spring, so booking early and reviewing the policy on your confirmation is a smart move for any New Market RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in New Market?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental New Market options are easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every host who welcomes four-legged guests. Many owners include this at no extra charge, while others add a small pet fee or cleaning surcharge listed right on the listing. Your pup will love the area too. Great Smoky Mountains National Park allows leashed dogs on the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail, and nearby Cherokee National Forest has miles of dog-friendly hikes. Pro tip: Cherokee Dam Campground and Panther Creek State Park (both under 30 minutes from New Market) are leash-friendly and have shaded loops perfect for hot Tennessee afternoons.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near New Market?
Yes, RV delivery New Market is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Douglas Dam, Panther Creek State Park, or even into Great Smoky Mountains National Park campgrounds, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp shore power, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, and most are happy to quote a flat rate for popular spots within 50 miles. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host, and you can literally show up with groceries and a cooler ready to camp.
tnstateparks.com/parks/panther-creekHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from New Market, TN?
Quite far, and the geography here is a road-tripper's dream. From New Market you're 35 minutes to Gatlinburg, 45 minutes to Pigeon Forge, about 1 hour to Cherokee, NC via Newfound Gap Road, 2 hours to Asheville, NC, 3 hours to Nashville, and 4 hours to Chattanooga's Lookout Mountain. Many RVezy hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include a generous daily allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles) with a small per-mile fee beyond that. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and message the host if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: the Foothills Parkway between Walland and Wears Valley is a stunning, low-traffic alternative for big rigs.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/newfoundgaproad.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near New Market, TN?
You're spoiled for choice. Top picks within 30 minutes include Cherokee Dam Campground (a TVA park right on Cherokee Lake with full hookups and a swim beach), Panther Creek State Park near Morristown (wooded sites with 30/50-amp electric and water), and Douglas Dam Headwater Campground on the French Broad River. About 45 minutes south, Anchor Down RV Resort in Dandridge is famous for its lakefront stone fire pits. Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont and Cades Cove Campground (about 90 minutes away) are the gold standard for RV camping New Market visitors love. Reserve early on Recreation.gov for park sites, especially May through October.
tnstateparks.com/parks/panther-creekWhen is the best time to visit New Market, TN in an RV?
New Market enjoys a humid subtropical climate, so you have a long camping season: April through early November is prime. Spring (April-May) brings highs in the upper 60s to upper 70s and dogwood blooms in the Smokies. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid with highs around 84-87°F, perfect for swimming in Cherokee Lake but plan AC-friendly hookup sites. Fall (mid-September to early November) is the headliner: cool 60s-70s and the most spectacular leaf color in the eastern US. Winters are mild (highs in the mid-40s to low 50s), and many local campgrounds stay open year-round, making January and February a quiet, budget-friendly window for a cozy motorhome rental New Market getaway.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around New Market?
You'll do great, and the area is genuinely first-timer friendly. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the dump station, so you're never left guessing. The roads around New Market itself are flat and easy: US-11E and I-81 are wide, straight, and forgiving for a first time renting an RV. Save the twistier Smoky Mountains routes (like the Tail of the Dragon on US-129) for after you've got a few miles under your belt. Pro tip: practice backing into a spot at Cherokee Dam Campground before tackling tight national park loops, and your host is just a text away the whole trip.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so a flat tire on Chapman Highway or a dead battery at Douglas Lake is just a phone call away from help. The roadside team handles tows, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and tire changes across the US and Canada. Your host is also a direct line for rig-specific quirks like the awning or water pump, since they know their RV best. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave New Market. Pro tip: major RV service centers in Knoxville (about 25 miles west) and Sevierville (about 30 miles south) mean help is always close.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Market RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed and is part of the fun. From New Market you can easily roll into North Carolina (Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway are about 90 minutes away), Virginia, Kentucky, or Georgia without extra paperwork. Cross-border trips to Canada depend on the individual host and protection coverage, so message the host before booking if that is your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state loops from New Market include the Smokies-to-Asheville run and the route up through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park into Kentucky.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from New Market?
Tennessee has some of the friendliest gas prices in the country, which keeps your trip budget in check. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8-12 MPG and a Class A to get 6-10 MPG, while a tow-behind travel trailer behind your own truck adds roughly 25-35% to your normal fuel use. For a typical 300-mile loop from New Market through the Smokies and back, budget around $90-$140 in fuel. Diesel pumps are easy to find along I-40 and I-81. Pro tip: fill up in Jefferson City or Dandridge before heading into Gatlinburg, where prices jump 30-50 cents in tourist season.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Market?
For peak season (June through October leaf-peeping and summer weekends), book national park sites 6 months out the moment the window opens on Recreation.gov, the official National Park Service reservation system. Tennessee State Parks like Panther Creek release reservations 13 months in advance through TNStateParks.com and fill quickly for holidays. TVA campgrounds at Cherokee Dam and Douglas Dam typically open 6 months ahead and are easier to grab midweek. Private resorts like Anchor Down sell out a year out for fall. Pro tip: if you strike out, RV delivery to a private lakefront Airbnb-style site (yes, several New Market hosts arrange this) is a clever Plan B.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around New Market, TN?
Driving here is mostly mellow with one big caveat: the mountains. I-81 and US-11E around New Market are wide, flat, and easy, even for a 30-foot Class C. Once you head south toward Gatlinburg, expect steeper grades on US-441 (Newfound Gap Road climbs to 5,046 feet) and heavy summer traffic in Pigeon Forge. Avoid the Tail of the Dragon (US-129) entirely in any RV. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up fast, and winter occasionally brings ice on bridges. Check TDOT's SmartWay map before mountain drives. Pro tip: cross the Smokies in early morning to dodge traffic and afternoon storms, and your campervan rental New Market trip will feel effortless.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhere can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near New Market?
You've got easy options. Cherokee Dam Campground, Douglas Dam Headwater Campground, and Panther Creek State Park all have free dump stations and potable water fills for registered campers, and most accept day-use dumping for a small fee. Pilot and Flying J truck stops along I-81 (exits 4 and 8) and I-40 offer RV dumps and freshwater for about $10-$15. Most full-hookup sites in the area provide 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer right at your pad, so you may not need to dump at all during a short stay. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading into Great Smoky Mountains campgrounds, where in-park fills can have long lines on summer weekends.
tnstateparks.com/parks/panther-creekWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in New Market?
More than you'd expect. A typical New Market rental sleeps 4-8 with real beds (queen in the bedroom, convertible dinette, bunks in family rigs), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a wet or dry bath with hot shower and flushing toilet, AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most include a flat-screen TV, and many hosts offer onboard generators for boondocking or a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for working from the lake. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often have outdoor kitchens, slide-outs, and awnings perfect for Cherokee Lake sunsets. Each listing shows exactly what's included, so you can match the rig to your group with zero guesswork.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons can I get with my New Market RV rental?
Hosts offer some genuinely useful extras to make your trip easier. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables, full kitchen and linen kits, bikes and kayaks (perfect for Cherokee and Douglas Lakes), generators, portable grills, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup and dropoff usually happens at the host's driveway between 1 PM and 11 AM, but most hosts are flexible if you ask. Mileage policies are clearly listed: many include 100-150 free miles per day with $0.30-$0.45 per extra mile, while others offer flat-rate unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a generator add-on often costs less than booking them separately, and saves hours on day one of your motorhome rental New Market trip.
tn.gov/tdci/consumer-affairs.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform when you book (never directly to the host), using a credit or debit card. The total includes the nightly rate, fees, taxes, and your chosen protection plan. A separate refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, and is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid hiccups, do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: keep dump station and fuel receipts from your New Market RV trip in case your host asks for proof the rig was returned ready to go.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from New Market a good idea for kids?
It's one of the best family RV trip New Market choices in the Southeast. Within an hour you can hit Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, the Cades Cove wildlife loop (black bears, deer, and turkey almost guaranteed), and the splash pads and swim beaches at Cherokee Dam. Most family-sized rigs on RVezy sleep 6-8 with bunk beds, kid-friendly dinette setups, and outdoor TVs for movie nights at camp. Filter by Sleeps 6+ and Pet-Friendly if Fido is coming. Pro tip: book a campground with a pool (Anchor Down or Pigeon Forge KOA) so the kids have something to do when you need a quiet hour with coffee.
