Camping near New Tazewell, Tennessee
New Tazewell sits in Claiborne County in northeast Tennessee, between the Cumberland Mountains and the shoreline of Norris Lake. The town works well as a base for RV travelers who want a mix of federal park camping, lake-area sites, and off-road recreation, all within a short drive of town.
The closest major public campground is Wilderness Road, inside Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet, about a half-hour drive north. Mountain Pass Campground sits closer to town, and Mountain View Campground Speedwell and Marty's ATV Oasis LLC extend options north toward the Cumberland Mountain trail systems. Rock Bottom Horse Camp adds an equestrian option for travelers hauling horses along with an RV.
Norris Lake, a large reservoir on the Powell and Clinch rivers, wraps the south side of the area and drives most summer demand. The reservoir is ringed by marinas and private campgrounds, so RVers commonly split trips between a lakeside stay and a night or two in the national park.
Things to do around New Tazewell
Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is the headline attraction, with more than 85 miles of trails and over 14,000 acres of recommended wilderness, the Pinnacle Overlook, Gap Cave tours, and the historic Hensley Settlement. From Wilderness Road Campground, hikers can access miles of forest and mountain trails directly from the campground, including the route to Skylight Cave.
Norris Lake dominates the water side of the trip. Bass fishing, boating, kayaking, and swimming are the main draws, and marinas around New Tazewell rent pontoons and ski boats. The Ridge Trail, a route from the Pinnacle to White Rocks, is open to horseback riders, which pairs well with a stay at Rock Bottom Horse Camp.
For motorized recreation, ATV and side-by-side trails in the Cumberland Mountains are accessible from staging areas north of town.

Summer is the peak season. Warm lake temperatures, long daylight, and school breaks fill lake-area campgrounds and the electric loops at Wilderness Road, so RVers should book well ahead for June through August weekends. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and heat index values in July can reach the mid-90s.
Spring and fall are the strongest shoulder seasons. Wildflowers arrive by April, and the Pinnacle Overlook is a known spot for hawk migration in the fall. Autumn foliage in the Cumberland and Brush Mountains typically peaks in late October, drawing weekend traffic to the national park.
Winter camping is possible but limited. At Wilderness Road, loops B, C, D and comfort station #2 remain open from mid-November through mid-March for the winter season, while the comfort station located between loops A and B and all other loops close during this time. Snow is possible in the colder months, though accumulations are usually light.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Wilderness Road Campground at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is reservation-only through Recreation.gov. Individual sites can be reserved as early as 6 months in advance, and group camping sites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-877-444-6777, and a dump station, for campground reservation holders only, is located near the entrance station.
Tennessee State Parks around Norris Lake, including nearby Norris Dam State Park, use the state's own reservation system rather than Recreation.gov, so plan on a separate account for those sites.
Private options near New Tazewell, including Mountain Pass Campground, Mountain View Campground Speedwell, Marty's ATV Oasis LLC, and Rock Bottom Horse Camp, are booked directly with each operator. For summer weekends and holiday periods, reserve as early as the operator's window allows.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain is Appalachian: wooded ridges, narrow valleys, and winding two-lane highways. RV drivers hauling larger rigs should scout routes in advance, especially on approaches to national park loops and to lakefront campgrounds on Norris Lake, where grades and turns can be tight.
Wilderness Road offers 150 woodland sites for tents, trailers, and RV campers. 43 sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric hook-ups are available in loops B and C, and hot showers and potable water are located in the comfort stations. Most sites require backing in, with the exception of one pull-through site. Full hookups with sewer are more commonly found at private campgrounds along the lake.
Poison ivy grows naturally throughout the area, including in the campground, and quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Cell service can be patchy in the mountains, so download maps before leaving town.

Expect 8-10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10-14 MPG for Class C, 16-20 MPG for Class B campervans, and 12-18 MPG for your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 300-mile weekend exploring Norris Lake, Cumberland Gap, and Knoxville, budget roughly $80-$150 in fuel.
