Campgrounds near Plainview, Tennessee
Plainview is a small community in Union County, Tennessee, set in the ridge-and-valley country north of Knoxville. The area's camping options cluster around Norris Lake, a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir known for clear, deep water and fishing for striped bass, walleye, and smallmouth. Sites here mix state-park campgrounds, TVA concessionaire campgrounds, and privately owned lakefront resorts, so RV travelers have a range of hookup levels and amenities within a short drive.
Hickory Star Campground sits on the lake near Maynardville and pairs RV sites with a full-service marina. Big Ridge State Park, immediately south of Plainview, offers standard RV sites with water and electric, tent sites, and hiking trails on a Norris Lake peninsula. Loyston Point Campground, a TVA-managed area at Point 19 on the reservoir, adds waterfront electric sites and cabins.
Further options include Volunteer Park Family Campground and Escapees Raccoon Valley RV Park, both within easy reach for travelers who prefer full-hookup RV parks over lakeside state and TVA sites.
Things to do near Plainview
Norris Lake drives most of the recreation. Boating, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and bass and striper fishing are the main draws, with marina fuel, ramps, and slip access available at Hickory Star Campground. Loyston Point Campground has an ADA-compliant swimming beach on Norris Reservoir and connects to the Hemlock Bluff National Recreation Trail along the reservoir's ridges and bluffs.
Big Ridge State Park has miles of hiking trails, three hike-in backcountry campsites, a swimming area, and historic sites tied to the pre-TVA Loyston settlement. Families use the park for picnicking, ranger programs, and short interpretive hikes.
Knoxville sits roughly 30 minutes south for city amenities, and Norris Dam State Park and the Museum of Appalachia are close for a rainy-day option.

The prime RV season around Plainview runs mid-spring through mid-fall. TVA reservoir campgrounds, including Loyston Point Campground, operate on a seasonal schedule from March 15 to November 15, so early spring and late fall visitors need to confirm dates before booking. Big Ridge State Park's campground stays open year-round, though its cabins run April 1 through October 31 and two of the three bathhouses close from November 1 to March 31.
Summer is peak. Weekends at lakeside campgrounds book out well in advance, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. Expect hot, humid afternoons and frequent thunderstorms.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the ridges. Winter is mild by northern standards but wet, with occasional freezes and light snow; travelers should verify hookup and bathhouse availability at state and TVA sites, and confirm dates for any private lakeside resort.

How to book
Big Ridge State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks reservation system. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance and carry a non-refundable advanced-reservation fee per campsite. Cancellations two or more days before arrival are refunded minus that fee; cancellations made one day out forfeit the first night's fees, and same-day cancellations forfeit more.
Loyston Point Campground is managed by a concessionaire under agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and books through the campground's own online reservation portal. A two-night minimum stay applies, and campers must be at least 18 to reserve a site or 21 to rent a cabin.
Hickory Star Campground, Volunteer Park Family Campground, and Escapees Raccoon Valley RV Park are private and book directly through each operator. Reserve summer weekends early and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
What to expect
Terrain is rolling and wooded, with narrow ridge roads leading to lakeside campgrounds. Some access roads are tight for larger rigs, so travelers with longer motorhomes or fifth wheels should confirm site length and turnaround access before booking.
Hookup levels vary. Big Ridge State Park provides sites with water and electric on paved slips with a gravel pad, accommodating rigs up to 35 feet with some sites to 45 feet. Loyston Point Campground has 64 sites, 59 with electric hookups, plus a fill and dump station and community water. Full hookups are more common at private RV parks such as Escapees Raccoon Valley RV Park.
Pets are generally welcome on leash but restricted from beaches and bathhouses. Cell service can be spotty in the coves; bring offline maps, and plan for bear-aware food storage if using Big Ridge's backcountry sites.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Plainview, TN?
RV rental in Plainview, TN is one of the more affordable East Tennessee getaways, with most rigs running about $95 to $200 per night depending on size and season. Compact campervans and travel trailers sit at the lower end, while Class A and Class C motorhomes climb toward the higher end. To score a cheap RV rental in Plainview, book midweek, target shoulder months like March or November, and filter for Instant Book listings. tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Plainview?
Good news: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Plainview, TN. Tennessee specifically exempts recreational vehicles from commercial driver license (CDL) requirements, no matter the size, so even a 35-foot Class A motorhome is fair game with your standard license. You'll need to be 25 or older to book through RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the licensing piece really is.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services/classd.htmlWhat protection is included with my RV rental in Plainview, TN?
Every RV rental in Plainview, TN automatically includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the winding roads toward Norris Lake without second-guessing the what-ifs. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout (hosts don't set this, you do). It's not traditional auto insurance, but it provides serious financial peace of mind for things like accidental damage. Pro tip: pick your protection tier before you hit the road and snap a quick walkaround video at pickup, so you're fully covered and ready to enjoy your Tennessee RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Plainview RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a standardized cancellation policy across all bookings (hosts don't set this themselves), and it includes a money-back grace period shortly after you book. Depending on how far ahead of your trip you cancel, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund. If a host needs to cancel on you, RVezy issues a full refund or travel credit so you're not left stranded. You'll see the exact terms before you confirm payment. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Norris Lake season, then relax knowing you've got flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Plainview RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Plainview is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many Union County hosts are dog owners themselves and happy to host yours. Once you're rolling, Big Ridge State Park welcomes leashed pets on its 15+ miles of trails and in pet-friendly cabins, and Norris Dam State Park nearby allows pets at most campsites too. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination, since some Tennessee state parks ask to see it at check-in. Your pup will love sniffing the Appalachian ridge air.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Plainview?
Yes, RV delivery in Plainview is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will drop the RV directly at Big Ridge State Park (about 15 minutes away in Maynardville), Loyston Point Campground on Norris Lake, or a private property or driveway in the Plainview or Corryton area. They'll level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and their delivery radius. Pro tip: ask about a delivery and pickup bundle to make your motorhome rental in Plainview completely hands-off.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeHow far can I drive on a Plainview RV rental, and is unlimited mileage an option?
You've got plenty of range to play with. Most Plainview hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for an RV road trip from Plainview into the Smokies or beyond. From Plainview, Gatlinburg is about 60 miles southeast, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is 65 miles, Pigeon Forge sits at 55 miles, Chattanooga is around 130 miles, and Asheville, NC is roughly 140 miles east. Pro tip: filter for unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning a multi-state loop.

tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Plainview?
Plainview shines in spring and fall. April through early June brings highs of 65 to 80°F, blooming dogwoods, and uncrowded campgrounds at Big Ridge State Park. September through early November is arguably the most magical window, with crisp 50 to 75°F days and the famous Appalachian fall foliage peaking around mid-to-late October. Summer (June through August) is warm and humid in the 80s, perfect for swimming in Norris Lake. Winters are mild but chilly, with January lows around 28°F. Pro tip: target the third weekend in October for peak leaf color on the drive between Plainview and the Smokies, and book your RV rental in Tennessee at least 6 weeks out for fall.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. How do I know what I'm doing?
First time renting an RV? You're going to be just fine. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, water tanks, slide-outs, propane, leveling, and dump procedures. You can also message your Plainview host before booking with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away if anything feels off on the road. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer for your first Plainview RV trip, and book a 2-night shakedown stay at Big Ridge State Park 15 minutes away. You'll learn the rig before tackling longer drives to the Smokies.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhat if something breaks down during my Plainview RV trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Tazewell Pike, a dead battery at a Norris Lake overlook, or a tow from the winding roads near Big Ridge State Park is handled with one phone call. For RV-specific quirks like a stuck slide or a finicky water pump, your host is your first text, since they know their rig inside and out. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving Plainview, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate so dispatch can find parts quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Plainview RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Plainview welcome interstate travel, which opens up some incredible routes. Popular RV road trips from Plainview include heading southeast on I-40 to Asheville, NC (about 2 hours), south to Chattanooga (around 2 hours), or north on I-75 into Kentucky for Cumberland Falls (about 2 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message them before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: confirm your route in the booking message so your host can flag any mileage or geographic boundaries up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for a Plainview RV road trip?
Tennessee has some of the most reasonable gas prices in the country, which keeps your fuel budget friendly. Expect a campervan rental in Plainview to get 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome around 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A around 7 to 10 MPG. With Tennessee regular unleaded typically running below the national average, a 4-day trip from Plainview to Gatlinburg, the Smokies, and back (around 250 miles) usually lands between $80 and $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Weigel's stations along Tazewell Pike or Highway 33 before heading deep into the Smokies, where prices climb in the tourist corridor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Plainview?
Book sooner rather than later, especially for Norris Lake favorites. Tennessee State Parks accepts campground reservations up to one year in advance through reserve.tnstateparks.com, and Big Ridge State Park's 50 lakeside sites fill fast for summer weekends and October leaf season. For Memorial Day through Labor Day, aim for 3 to 6 months ahead. For shoulder seasons, 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty. Loyston Point and Cove Lake State Park use the same Tennessee State Parks system. Pro tip: if you strike out at Big Ridge, set an alert: cancellations are common 2 days out, since that's the refund cutoff in the state park system.
reserve.tnstateparks.com/big-ridge/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Plainview?
Driving around Plainview is mostly easygoing rural two-lane roads through the rolling Appalachian Ridge and Valley region. Tazewell Pike (Highway 33) is the main artery and handles RVs well. The roads winding around Norris Lake and into Big Ridge State Park are narrow with some grades, so take them slow in a longer rig. Heading into Knoxville, I-75 and I-640 can get busy at rush hour. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk and occasional fog in the hollows after a cool night. Pro tip: avoid the steep, twisty back roads into Sharps Chapel if you're driving a 30-foot-plus motorhome; stick to Highway 33 and Big Ridge Park Road instead.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/find-traffic-information.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Plainview?
You'll find solid amenities at the best campgrounds near Plainview. Big Ridge State Park offers 50-amp electric and water hookups (no sewer at the site, but a dump station is on-site), three bathhouses with hot showers, a swim beach, and a camp store in season. Norris Dam State Park and Cove Lake State Park provide similar setups. For full hookups including sewer, head to nearby private parks like Yarberry Campground or Raccoon Valley RV Park, both within 30 minutes. Potable water fill stations are available at most state park entrances. Pro tip: bring a 50-to-30-amp adapter and at least 25 feet of fresh water hose, since some Norris Lake sites have spread-out hookup placements.
tnstateparks.com/parks/campground/big-ridgeWhat's actually inside a typical Plainview RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Plainview comes fully outfitted: a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa that converts to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many rigs include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, propane fire pit, and even smart TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots. Travel trailers offer similar interiors minus the cab. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, plus sleeps count and seatbelt count. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check for a generator if you're planning a boondocking night on Norris Lake's quieter coves.
tnstateparks.com/parks/big-ridgeWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Plainview hosts make trip prep effortless with popular add-ons like linens and towel packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs, generators, bike racks, and propane fire pits. Many also offer optional dump-and-refill service so you don't have to handle tanks yourself (usually $50 to $100). Pickup is typically at the host's property in the Plainview or Corryton area, with delivery available to Big Ridge State Park or Norris Lake campgrounds for an additional fee based on distance. Mileage policies and pet fees are set per listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a dump-out package for a fully turnkey Plainview RV trip, especially handy if you're flying into Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport (about 45 minutes away).
flyknoxville.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for a Plainview RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, so there's no awkward cash exchange at pickup. You'll pay the booking total (nightly rate, fees, and any add-ons) by credit card when you confirm the booking. A refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is temporarily authorized on your card before your trip, with the amount shown on each listing. It's released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Pro tip: take a thorough video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, and keep all communication inside RVezy messaging, that's the cleanest way to protect your deposit on any rent an RV in Plainview booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take an RV out in winter from Plainview?
Winter RV camping in Plainview is absolutely doable and surprisingly peaceful. East Tennessee winters are mild compared to most of the country, with January highs around 45°F and lows near 28°F, and snow is occasional rather than constant. Big Ridge State Park stays open year-round (with one bathhouse open from November 1 to March 31), and you'll often have lake views to yourself. Look for RVs listed as four-season or with heated holding tanks, and ask hosts about insulated skirting and propane furnaces. Pro tip: bring a heated drinking water hose and disconnect/drain it overnight if temperatures drop below freezing, a quick habit that prevents the most common winter RV headache.
