Roan Mountain, Tennessee camping overview
Roan Mountain sits in northeastern Tennessee at the base of the 6,285-foot Roan massif, on the Doe River and minutes from the North Carolina line. The area is a compact hub for RV travelers heading to the southern Appalachians, with easy access to the Appalachian Trail at Carvers Gap and the Roan Highlands balds. Knoxville is roughly two hours west, and Boone, North Carolina is under an hour east.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to a large state-park campground beside the river. Roan Mountain State Park anchors the area with 86 RV sites, 20 tent sites, and four group tent sites, plus cabins. Sugar Hollow RV Park and Campground LLC and Mountain View RV Park - Roan Mountain serve travelers who want private-park amenities, while Doe River Landing and Doe River Campground sit along the Doe River corridor.
Roan Mountain State Park sustained significant damage from Hurricane Helene, and the upper campground loops remain closed pending bridge replacement. Check current conditions before booking.
Things to do around Roan Mountain
Hiking is the primary draw. Roan Mountain State Park protects hardwood forest and river frontage on the Doe River, and Carvers Gap on the Appalachian Trail is a short drive up TN Highway 143, opening onto the grassy balds of Round Bald and Jane Bald.
The Doe River runs through the state park and supports a healthy trout population, with wade fishing and easy access from riverside sites. The park offers cabins, picnic areas, and playgrounds, though the swimming pool has been permanently closed since 2022. Miller Farmstead, a historic homestead within the park, opens seasonally for tours.
Mid-to-late June draws crowds for the Catawba rhododendron bloom on the Roan Highlands and the park's annual Rhododendron Festival.

Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, when warm weather, active trails, and wildflowers pull heavy weekend traffic. Sites at Roan Mountain State Park fill quickly in summer, and demand spikes further during the mid-June rhododendron bloom and festival. Book several weeks out for summer weekends, and further ahead for the bloom window.
Spring brings wildflowers and cool nights, and elevations above 5,000 feet on the Roan Highlands stay chilly well into May. Fall delivers strong hardwood color from mid-October, with cooler nights and lighter crowds on weekdays. Precipitation is spread through the year, and Roan Mountain averages around 52 inches of rain and 21 inches of snow annually.
Winter is cold and can bring snow, especially at higher elevations. The state park's lower campground is open year-round, though the camp store and laundry close for the off-season and some private parks limit hookups in freezing weather. Confirm operating status directly with each campground before winter travel.
How to book campgrounds near Roan Mountain
Roan Mountain State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks reservation system. Individual campsites, cabins, and the four group sites can be reserved online or by phone up to one year in advance, and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. Central Reservations can be reached at 1-888-867-2757, Monday through Friday. The park office handles the three primitive backcountry campsites on the Rosebay Ridge Trail, which require direct contact to arrange.
Campsite cancellations made two or more days before arrival receive a refund of campground fees minus the reservation fee. Cancellations one day out forfeit the first night, and same-day cancellations for multi-night stays forfeit the first two nights. Private parks such as Sugar Hollow RV Park and Campground LLC, Mountain View RV Park - Roan Mountain, Doe River Landing, and Doe River Campground each set their own booking windows and cancellation terms; reserve directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground at Roan Mountain
Roads inside Roan Mountain State Park are curvy and can be steep, and the campground is split between a lower loop suited to larger rigs and upper loops on a hillside with tighter turns. The upper loops are currently closed to all use pending bridge replacement, so plan on the lower loop for now. Big-rig drivers should measure sites and confirm assignments at check-in.
All RV sites have water and electric hookups; there are no sewer hookups, and a dump station is located at the campground check-in. Bathhouses have hot showers, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the campground, though it can slow or drop when the park is full. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is noon, with a strict 14-day stay limit. Bring only heat-treated firewood or use wood collected on site. Cell service is limited, and a Verizon booster is available at the check-in station.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Roan Mountain, TN
How much does an RV rental in Roan Mountain cost?
Good news, RV rental in Roan Mountain is one of the most affordable mountain getaways in the Southeast. On RVezy you'll typically see travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from about $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches at $250 and up. Add a campsite at Roan Mountain State Park (around $30 a night for a water and electric site) and you've got a full mountain trip for far less than a hotel in nearby Johnson City. For a cheap RV rental in Roan Mountain, book midweek in May or September when rhododendron season hasn't peaked. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in your rig fast.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountain/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Roan Mountain, TN?
Great news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Roan Mountain. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even big Class A rigs. You will need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during checkout, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval process feels, often within a few hours of submitting.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Roan Mountain protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely, every RV rental in Roan Mountain booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Cherohala Skyway with confidence. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives you meaningful financial peace of mind in case of an incident on those winding mountain roads near Carvers Gap. Pro tip: for first-timers tackling the climb up Highway 143, picking a higher-tier plan costs only a few extra dollars per night and removes that lingering what if feeling.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Roan Mountain RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund if plans change shortly after booking. After that, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, and RVezy also accounts for exceptional situations like natural disasters, which matters in the Southern Appalachians where late-summer storms occasionally affect the Roan Highlands. You will see the full policy details before you confirm payment. Pro tip: book early to secure a peak rhododendron-bloom weekend in mid-June, knowing you have the safety net of RVezy's cancellation policy behind you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Roan Mountain?
Yes, your pup is very welcome. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Roan Mountain, and you can find them in seconds by checking the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Roan Mountain State Park allows leashed pets throughout the campground and on most trails outside park buildings, so your dog can hike alongside you through the rhododendron groves and along the Doe River. Carvers Gap, just up Highway 143, is a favorite leashed-dog adventure with wide-open balds and cool summit breezes even in July. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you have a large breed or more than one pet, so cleaning fees and bedding rules are clear up front.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Roan Mountain?
Yes, RV delivery in Roan Mountain is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a motorhome up steep mountain grades. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig directly to Roan Mountain State Park on Highway 143, set it up on your site, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just filter by Delivery when searching and enter your campground address to see hosts who serve that location. Delivery fees usually scale with distance from Johnson City or Elizabethton. Pro tip: book a delivered travel trailer and you can spend your whole vacation hiking instead of breaking camp.
tnstateparks.com/parks/campground/roan-mountainHow far can I drive, and what are the mileage limits?
You'll have plenty of room to explore. Most RVezy hosts in the Roan Mountain area include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with the option to add more, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Blue Ridge loop. From Roan Mountain you can reach Asheville in about 75 miles, Great Smoky Mountains National Park in about 110 miles, Boone, NC in around 45 miles, and Grandfather Mountain in roughly 35 miles, all easily doable inside a typical mileage package. Pro tip: if you're planning the full Blue Ridge Parkway drive south to Cherokee, ask the host to bundle extra miles into your booking up front, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage at return.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Roan Mountain to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The flagship spot is Roan Mountain State Park Campground on Highway 143, with 86 RV sites featuring water and electric hookups, hot-shower bathhouses, a dump station, and the Doe River running right through it. Just outside the park, Roan Creek Campground offers creekside RV sites with full hookups, while Black Bear Resort sits closer to the Appalachian Trail crossing at Dennis Cove. About 30 minutes north, Cove Ridge at Watauga Lake gives you lakefront RV camping in Roan Mountain country. Pro tip: the state park campground generally operates mid-April through October and books out fast for the June Rhododendron Festival, so reserve as soon as your dates are locked.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainWhen is the best time of year for a Roan Mountain RV trip?
Roan Mountain is genuinely a year-round destination, but late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Roan Mountain. Summer highs in the valley sit in the low 80s F while the 6,285-foot summit stays a refreshing 15 to 20 degrees cooler, a rare treat in the Southeast. The famous Catawba rhododendron blooms typically peak in mid-to-late June at the Roan Highlands, drawing visitors from across the country. October brings spectacular fall color from roughly the second week through month-end. Winter lows can dip into the teens and the state park campground closes November through April 15. Pro tip: aim for the third weekend of June if you want bloom season at its absolute peak.
weather.gov/mrx/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I get help figuring it all out?
You're going to be fine, and you're not alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery) covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, holding tanks, and how to dump at the Roan Mountain State Park campground check-in dump station. Most hosts also leave a printed cheat sheet and stay reachable by text throughout your trip. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your stay, and 24/7 roadside assistance is built into every booking. Pro tip: for your very first trip, choose a Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer, you skip the towing learning curve and still get the full Roan Highlands experience.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainWhat happens if I have a breakdown on the road?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental in Roan Mountain booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 19E or a dead battery at Carvers Gap is a phone call, not a crisis. Help can be dispatched for towing, tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery anywhere in the region. Cell service can be spotty above 5,000 feet near the Roan summit, so save the roadside number in your phone before you head up. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about quirks of their specific rig. Pro tip: Verizon tends to be the most reliable carrier in the Roan Highlands.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines into North Carolina or Virginia?
Yes, and you'll want to. Roan Mountain literally straddles the Tennessee and North Carolina border at Carvers Gap, so an RV road trip from Roan Mountain almost always crosses state lines and that's totally fine on RVezy. Interstate travel within the US is allowed and your protection package travels with you. Popular routes include south to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway (about 75 miles), east to Grandfather Mountain and Boone, NC, and north into Virginia's Mount Rogers area. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: confirm the host's specific out-of-state policy in the listing details, some include unlimited interstate miles while others have a regional cap.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Roan Mountain RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable here. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 15 to 20 MPG for a campervan or tow vehicle with a small trailer. Tennessee gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and the closest fill-ups to the state park are in the town of Roan Mountain on Highway 19E and in Elizabethton, about 20 minutes north. For a 4-night trip with day-drives to Carvers Gap, Watauga Lake, and Bakersville, NC, most renters budget $150 to $300 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Elizabethton before climbing Highway 143, the closer to the mountain you get, the fewer (and pricier) stations there are.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campsite at Roan Mountain State Park?
Plan ahead and you'll get exactly the site you want. Roan Mountain State Park campsites are reservable through the official Tennessee State Parks reservation system at reserve.tnstateparks.com up to 12 months in advance, and you absolutely want to use that window for June (rhododendron season), July 4th, and October leaf-peeping weekends. For regular summer weekends, 2 to 3 months out is usually enough. The park has 86 RV sites with water/electric and 20 tent sites, plus a dump station at check-in. Pro tip: request a riverside site along the Doe River loop, falling asleep to the sound of trout water is the quintessential Roan Mountain experience.
reserve.tnstateparks.com/roan-mountain/campsitesWhat are the driving conditions like around Roan Mountain?
Driving here is scenic and very doable with a little prep. Highway 19E from Elizabethton is a well-maintained two-lane road with gentle grades, perfect for any size motorhome rental in Roan Mountain. Highway 143 up to Carvers Gap is steeper and curvier as you climb toward 5,500 feet, so take it slow in low gear and use engine braking on the descent. Summer afternoons can bring fast-moving thunderstorms, and fog above 4,000 feet is common at dawn. Winter brings occasional ice and the road to the Roan summit picnic area closes seasonally. Pro tip: drive up to Carvers Gap before 10 a.m. for the clearest views and the lightest oncoming traffic on the narrow upper switchbacks.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Roan Mountain?
You'll have everything you need to settle in comfortably. Roan Mountain State Park's 86 RV sites offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, hot-shower bathhouses, flush toilets, drinking water, laundry, a camp store (seasonal), Wi-Fi throughout the campground, and a Verizon cell-phone booster at check-in. There are no sewer hookups at the sites, but a dump station and potable water fill are right at the campground entrance, so you can empty tanks and top off on your way out. Trash and recycling dumpsters are at check-in too. Pro tip: pack a long sewer hose and a water-pressure regulator, the park's water pressure can spike on the lower loop and a $12 regulator protects your rental's plumbing.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountain/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Roan Mountain?
More creature comforts than you would expect. A typical RVezy rental near Roan Mountain comes with real beds (often a queen plus convertible dinette or sofa), a full kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, dining table, and proper seatbelts for travel. Most Class C motorhomes sleep 5 to 7, while travel trailers commonly sleep 4 to 6, ideal for a family RV trip Roan Mountain style. Many listings also include a TV, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid use at higher elevations. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check listing photos for a heated underbelly if you are booking in April or October, mountain nights drop into the 30s F.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Roan%20Mountain%2C%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when booking?
The extras really do make the trip. Common RVezy add-ons in the Roan Mountain area include bedding and linen packages ($40 to $80), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane top-offs, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Johnson City, Elizabethton, or Bristol, but RV delivery in Roan Mountain straight to your state park site is widely offered, often $2 to $4 per mile from the host's base. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing's daily allowance and overage rate before booking. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linens package usually costs less than driving the RV yourself plus one tank of gas, and you arrive to a ready-made campsite.
tnstateparks.com/parks/roan-mountainHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and fully digital. When you book your RV rental Tennessee getaway, you pay securely through RVezy with a credit or debit card, no cash or e-transfers to the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and with tanks handled per the listing. To avoid surprises, do a quick photo walk-around with the host at pickup and again at return. Pro tip: empty the black and gray tanks at the Roan Mountain State Park dump station before returning the RV, dumping fees from hosts are one of the most common avoidable charges.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Roan Mountain?
You're sitting on one of the best launch pads in the Southeast. Popular RV road trips from Roan Mountain include Asheville, NC and the Biltmore Estate (about 75 miles, 90 minutes), Great Smoky Mountains National Park via Gatlinburg (about 110 miles, 2.5 hours), Boone and Blowing Rock, NC (45 miles, 1 hour), Grandfather Mountain (35 miles), and the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance at Linville Falls (40 miles). For a longer loop, continue south on the Parkway all the way to Cherokee, NC, one of the most scenic drives in America. Pro tip: drive the Parkway midweek in early October, the leaf color between mileposts 305 and 320 near Grandfather Mountain is world-class and traffic is a fraction of weekends.
