East Tennessee has four clear seasons. Spring brings wildflower blooms in the Smokies, active fishing on Cherokee Lake, and a rise in thunderstorm activity. Weekends fill quickly at lake campgrounds once school lets out.
Summer is the peak booking window. Humidity is high, afternoon storms are common, and lakeside sites at Panther Creek State Park often sell out weeks ahead for holiday weekends. Fall is a favorite for many travelers: cooler nights, lower humidity, and leaf color that peaks in the surrounding ridges from mid-October into early November. Book fall foliage weekends well in advance.
Winter camping is quieter but viable at parks that stay open. Panther Creek is open year-round, with reservations available up to one year in advance through the Tennessee State Parks portal and a maximum stay of 14 days, extended to 28 days from December through February. Freezing nights do occur, so winterize water hookups accordingly.

How to book

Advanced reservations may be made up to one year prior to arrival, with a non-refundable advanced reservation fee per campsite. Booking directly on the portal allows filtering by RV length, amperage, and sewer availability.
Panther Creek has 50 campsites with water and 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical hookups, grills, picnic tables, and fire rings, and eight of the campsites have sewer hookups. Sewer sites go first, so target those early.
Private campgrounds near Russellville, including Greenlees Fall Creek Campground, Mammoth Ridge RV Park, McMillan Farms,Campground and Horseback Riding Trails, and the Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA Journey, take bookings through their own websites or by phone. There is a laundromat open year-round and a dump station for self-contained rigs.
Cell service is generally reliable close to the I-81 and I-40 corridors but can drop in the ridges. Bring bug spray for summer, and expect deer and raccoons around dusk.
